HEATH SLOCUM WINS BARCLAYS TRUSTING TITLEIST PRO V1xTitleist Brand Ambassador Steve Stricker and Fellow Pro V1x Loyalist Padraig Harrington Tie for 2nd
Fairhaven, MA (August 31, 2009) - One week after narrowly qualifying as one of the top 125 players for the season-ending FedEx Cup Playoffs, Pro V1x loyalist Heath Slocum stunned the golf world by winning its opening leg - The Barclays - with a 20-foot par putt on the final hole for a one-shot victory. Slocum, who holed out for eagle from 159 yards earlier in the final round, closed with a 4-under 67 to top four players, including Titleist Brand Ambassador Steve Stricker (Pro V1, 909D3 driver, 906F2 fairway metal, 585.H utility metal, 755 irons, Vokey Design wedges) and Titleist golf ball loyalist Padraig Harrington (Pro V1x). Slocum finished with a 9-under 275 total.
Titleist Brand Ambassador Nick Watney (Pro V1x, 909D2 driver, 909F2 fairway metal, 909H hybrid, new AP2 irons, Vokey Design pitching and lob wedges, Spin Milled sand wedge, Scotty Cameron Newport Tour 350 putter) shot a 4-under 67 to finish in a tie for 6th at 7-under 276. PGA Tour rookie and Titleist Brand Ambassador Webb Simpson (Pro V1x, 909D3 driver, 909H hybrid, AP2 and new MB irons, Vokey Design Spin Milled wedges), who led after the second round, had a strong performance, earning solo sixth place a further shot back. Third round leader Paul Goydos (Pro V1) tied for ninth with Ian Poulter (Pro V1x) and Scott Verplank (Pro V1).
It was the third career PGA Tour victory for Slocum. The win vaults him from number 124 in the FedEx Cup standings to number 3 as the Playoffs head next week to the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Of the 11 players who finished among the Top 10 and ties, 8 trusted a Titleist golf ball for their success. Titleist was the most played golf ball at The Barclays with 81 players, compared to 12 for the nearest competitor. Titleist was also first in wedges (94) and putters (45), and second in drivers (26), fairway metals (24) and iron sets (26). The win marks the 18th for Titleist golf ball players on the 2009 PGA Tour, 10 more than the nearest competitor with 8.
LPGA: South Korean rookie Mi Jung Hur (Pro V1) converted a 6-foot birdie putt on the second hole of a three-way playoff at the Safeway Classic to earn her first LPGA Tour victory. Hur shot a final-round 65, while her two playoff participants, including Michele Redman (Pro V1), each finished with 67s, as all three players finished regulation at 13-under 203. Seon Hwa Lee (Pro V1) was among three players who tied for 4th place at 11-under 205.
Titleist was the most played golf ball at the Safeway Classic with 101 players, compared to 31 for the nearest competitor. Titleist was also second in putters (22). Hur's victory is the 13th for Titleist golf ball players on the 2009 LPGA Tour, 10 more than the nearest competitor with 3.
CHAMPIONS: Second-round co-leader Loren Roberts (Pro V1) birdied the final two holes to overtake Titleist Brand Ambassador Mark O'Meara (Pro V1, 909D3 driver, 909F3 fairway metal, 909H hybrid, AP2 irons, Vokey Design wedges) and win the Boeing Classic by one shot. O'Meara closed with a blistering 8-under 64 in his quest for his first Champions Tour victory, but Roberts answered with his own 7-under 65 for an 18-under 198 total. Dan Forsman (Pro V1x, 909D3 driver, 909F3 fairway metal, 585.H utility metal, ZM irons, Vokey Design sand wedge, Vokey prototype lob wedge, Scotty Cameron putter) and Bernhard Langer (Pro V1) tied for third at 14-under 202.
Roberts lived up to his "Boss of the Moss" nickname in capturing his third victory of the season. He needed only 23 putts in his final round and just nine over the closing nine holes.Titleist was the most played golf ball at the Boeing Classic with 48 players, compared to 14 for the nearest competitor. Titleist was also first in wedges (51). The win marks the 12th for Titleist golf ball players on the 2009 Champions Tour, 10 more than the nearest competitor with 2.
SOUTH AFRICA: Titleist ambassador Jbe Kruger (Pro V1x) captured his maiden Sunshine Tour victory by winning the Zambia Open by three shots. Kruger carded a final round 6-under 67 to finish at 15-under 204. Titleist Brand Ambassador Desvonde Botes (Pro V1) and Titleist golf ball loyalist Mark Murless (Pro V1x) were among three players who shared third position at 210.
