|FAIRHAVEN, MA (October 24, 2003) - Acushnet Company, manufacturer of Titleist and Pinnacle golf balls, announced its Ball Plant II has been selected as the 1,000th recipient of Star Site status from the office of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) under the prestigious Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). Star Site status is presented to an organization whose safety management programs go beyond OSHA standards in its ability to protect workers and create an environment of motivation and confidence in its safety and health programs. VPP sites are "best in class" and therefore, a select group of facilities. |
William J. Frye, Senior Director of Golf Ball Manufacturing of Ball Plant II, accepted the award from U.S. Assistant Secretary of Labor John Henshaw on behalf of the Ball Plant II associates in a flag-raising ceremony held at the manufacturing facility in the New Bedford Business Park. Ball Plant II is the fourth Acushnet Company facility to earn Star Site status.
In May of 1996, Titleist Ball Plant I was named as the first VPP Star Site recipient in the sporting goods industry. Titleist Custom Golf Ball Operations, located in New Bedford, and Acushnet Company Packaging Center, in Fairhaven, also earned VPP Star Site status in 1998 and 2001, respectively.
"We are extremely proud of our Ball Plant II associates for their continuing commitment to safety and health programs and are once again honored that OSHA has recognized them and Titleist for VPP Star status," said Wally Uihlein, Chairman and CEO of Acushnet Company. "The employees and management of the Titleist Ball Plant are to be congratulated for achieving OSHA's official recognition for their outstanding efforts."
Acushnet Company employs approximately 4,600 associates worldwide including 2,200 in the Greater New Bedford, Massachusetts area, making it the area's largest employer. Over 400 associates are employed at Ball Plant II.
