TITLEIST INTRODUCES NEW FORGED STAINLESS 704.CB AND 804.OS IRONS

''Tremendous Product Performance Story'' Emerges as New Models Replace Renowned DCI Franchise

New Forged Stainless 704.CB Irons

Fairhaven, MA (March 15, 2004) –Titleist has earned a well-deserved reputation for developing high quality, high performance forged irons for the world’s greatest players, including Davis Love III, Ernie Els and Adam Scott, among others. With the introduction of the new Forged Stainless 704.CB (Cavity Back) and 804.OS (Oversize) models, Titleist expands upon the heritage of its high performance iron offering by enabling a wider range of golfers to experience the tour-proven performance, looks and feel of a forged iron.

Developed, tested and played on the PGA Tour, the new Forged Stainless 704.CB and 804.OS irons provide a strong link between the highest levels of competitive golf and Titleist’s industry-leading grass roots club fitting efforts. Designed to connect serious golfers with the better-player-preferred forged iron construction, the new irons provide broader reach and more playability features than Titleist’s Forged 600 Series models.

“The new Forged Stainless 704.CB and 804.OS irons provide a tremendous product performance story, and highlight the incredible synergy between Titleist design expertise and engineering process excellence,” commented Chris McGinley, Vice President Golf Club Marketing. “By investing the time and energy to improve the forging process with new materials and finishing techniques, we have combined the playability heritage of the renowned Titleist DCI iron franchise with a new forged stainless construction to provide great forged feel, outstanding design features, and full customization capabilities. The new Forged Stainless 704.CB and 804.OS irons are the most versatile forged irons in the marketplace.”

Like all Titleist high performance products, the new Forged Stainless offerings were play-tested by some of the world’s top tour players, club professionals and competitive amateurs prior to being introduced to the marketplace. The 704.CB irons are being played with success on the PGA Tour by Brad Faxon, Ben Curtis, Arron Oberholser, Tom Pernice, Jr., Peter Jacobsen, Duffy Waldorf and Aaron Barber among others. Billy Mayfair relies upon the 804.OS model.

“With the introduction of the new Forged Stainless 704.CB and 804.OS irons, Titleist is equipped to fit a wide range of players, from the world’s top tour professionals to aspiring golfers, into the appropriate iron product for their individual game,” said McGinley. “The new 704.CB and 804.OS models perfectly complement the 690.MB and 690.CB irons. By offering both forged iron and Titleist DCI loyalists great performing products with the appropriate level of playability, more golfers have the opportunity to experience the sweet, solid feel and performance of a forging. This launch marks another milestone in the growth of the Titleist 'Serious Clubs for Serious Golfers' franchise.”

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT
Common to the new Forged Stainless 704.CB and 804.OS irons is the forging process from high-grade soft stainless steel alloy, which is heat-treated to the same softness as Titleist’s classic 600 Series mild carbon steel models. Both new irons feature an inner cavity weight shelf design that puts added mass behind the face impact area. The overall result is a soft but solid feel, something highly preferred by the best players in the world.
“A precise multi-step forging process is used to produce 704.CB and 804.OS irons,” commented Peter Gilbert, Director of Titleist Iron Development and Design. “It is extremely accurate and requires less polishing and hand work to finish. After forging, the face is milled perfectly flat and the outside hosel diameter and shaft bore are machined to precise dimensions and alignment. The overall result is a more accurate and consistent finished head with a precise weight distribution, and a great look in the playing position.”
The multi-step forging process in combination with the high-grade stainless steel allows for a thinner face design. This provides increased cavity volume and allows for an improved overall weight distribution and center of gravity (CG) location. The higher volume cavity produces a higher moment of inertia for improved playability.

The 704.CB and 804.OS irons also feature a new “near U” scoreline design that provides more groove volume for consistent spin performance from a variety of conditions. A high performance sole design with a blunted leading edge and enough sole width keeps the club from digging. The bounce angle specifications are designed to reduce skip in firmer conditions.

TITLEIST FORGED STAINLESS 704.CB IRONS
The new Forged Stainless 704.CB is a high performance, mid size, cavity back blade iron that provides a good balance between forgiveness and shot making. The midsize blade and high volume cavity provide playability, while the traditional offset provides shot and trajectory control. The 704.CB is targeted at those players looking for contemporary blade iron performance with outstanding forged feel, and include tour players, club professionals, accomplished and serious golfers in the single digit to low double digit handicap range.

The shallower heel profile, rounded topline, and sophisticated shapes and blends create a soft but confident appearance in the playing position. Designed to produce an optimum ball flight, the sole width and inner cavity muscle of the 704.CB irons provide a lower center of gravity in the long irons, making them easier to hit. The standard loft specifications, progressive offset and consistent spin performance provide a traditional and controllable trajectory in the mid- and short irons.

The 704.CB irons are available stock with True Temper Dynamic Gold steel shafts and Titleist Victory Velvet full cord round grips. Additional shaft options are available through the Titleist custom department. The suggested retail price is $899 for a set of 8 irons and will be available in golf shops in April 2004.

New Forged Stainless 804.OS Irons

TITLEIST FORGED STAINLESS 804.OS IRONS
The new Forged Stainless 804.OS is a high performance, oversize iron with offset that provides game enhancement features in a traditional blade shape. The face area of the 804.OS is 3 percent larger than the new 704.CB. Its larger, higher volume back cavity provides outstanding forgiveness and playability. Enhanced offset specifications provide an easy to square face, and higher, straighter ball flight. The 804.OS is the most forgiving iron in the Titleist family.

Designed for golfers that need or prefer oversize and offset performance with outstanding forged feel, the 804.OS target golfer ranges from tour and club professionals to highly skilled amateurs and serious and aspiring golfers with single to double digit handicaps.

The 804.OS features a shallower heel profile, rounded topline, and traditional blade-to-hosel junction to create a soft and attractive appearance in the playing position. The thicker topline width provides added confidence, proportionate to the larger head size. A wider sole, shorter hosel length and enhanced offset produce higher flying long irons. The traditional blade shape, progressive offset and stronger loft specifications provide for both length and control in the mid and short irons.

The 804.OS irons are available with the lightweight NS Pro 970 steel shaft or the Titleist 3980 graphite shaft, and Titleist Victory Velvet Rubber grips. Additional shafts are available through the Titleist custom department. The suggested retail price for a set of eight irons is $899 in steel, and $1,080 with graphite and will be available in golf shops on April 2004.
