Joey Sindelar Wins the 2004 Wachovia Championship |
Fairhaven, MA (May 10, 2004) - While the winner of the Wachovia Championship was still in question as Joey Sindelar and Arron Oberholser prepared for a playoff, the winning golf ball was not. Since both players rely upon the Pro V1, it would be the 14th time through the first 19 PGA Tour events this season that the champion would trust a Titleist in victory.
For Sindelar, it was an inspirational comeback against a world-class field where he earned a long-awaited return to the winner's circle. It marked his 7th victory in a professional career that has spanned over 20 years. Oberholser, a rising star in his second year on the PGA Tour who relies upon 13 Titleist golf clubs for his success is still seeking his first career PGA Tour title. Additional victories on the Champions, Nationwide and Japan Tours increased Titleist's 2004 worldwide win count to 47, more than all other golf balls combined.
Sindelar topped a leaderboard that included 12 Titleist players among the 14 who finished in the Top 10 and ties:

Arron Oberholser 2nd Place at Wachovia |
At 46 years old, Sindelar is the oldest player to win on the PGA TOUR since Titleist ambassador Peter Jacobsen won the 2003 Greater Hartford Open at the age of 49. Sindelar's last victory also came in a playoff at the 1990 Hardee's Golf Classic (now the John Deere Classic).
Titleist ambassador Phil Mickelson tied for 5th, marking his 8th top-5 finish and 10th top-10 in 11 events in 2004. Mickelson fired a 5-under par 67 on Sunday, the best final round and only bogey-free round of the day.
In addition to the Pro V1 golf ball, the Wachovia Championship winner also relied upon a Scotty Cameron by Titleist Futura putter. Cameron has been the putter of choice in 8 PGA Tour victories this year, nearly three times the nearest competitor with 3.
Kirk Triplett, playing the Titleist Pro V1x golf ball, established a new course record during the first round at the difficult Quail Hollow Club. Triplett fired an 8-under par 64 that included 7 birdies and an eagle.
Champions Tour: Larry Nelson earned his first Champions Tour title of the year and the 18th of his career with a one-stroke win at the FedEx Kinko's Classic. Nelson fired a final round 5-under par 67 to finish at 7-under 209. It was a 1-2-3 finish for Titleist players as Nelson and runner-up Bruce Lietzke each relied upon the Pro V1x, while Bob Gilder tied for third playing the Pro V1. Nelson's win marks the 6th victory on the Champions Tour for Titleist players this year, twice as many as the nearest competitor with 3.
Nationwide Tour: Justin Bolli went 6-under over the final six holes with four birdies and an eagle to capture the Chattanooga Classic and his first career Nationwide Tour title. Bolli relies upon the Pro V1 golf ball, Titleist Titanium 983E 7.5 driver, Forged 690.MB irons, Vokey Design wedges and a Scotty Cameron by Titleist Studio Design 1.5 putter for his success. He fired a 9-under par 63 on Saturday and a 7-under 65 on Sunday to finish at 21-under 267 for the one-stroke win. Bolli's victory is the 6th for Titleist through the first 8 events on the 2004 Nationwide Tour.
Japan Tour: Paul Sheehan fired a final round 4-under par 67 to capture the Fujisankei Classic by four strokes. Sheehan placed 2nd last week at The Crowns event. It is the first career win on the JGTO for Sheehan, an Australian playing full-time for the second year in Japan.
