Titleist Launches New Tour-Proven Pro Titanium 905 Drivers

905T and 905S Drivers Find Early-Season Success with Players Across Worldwide Professional Tours

Fairhaven, MA (March 17, 2005) – Titleist takes driver performance to the next level with the introduction of the new Titleist Pro Titanium 905 series. Since the launch of the original Titleist Titanium 975D driver in 1997, Titleist has developed an unmatched heritage of product performance and success across every level of competitive golf. The new Pro Titanium 905T and 905S models are built upon a successful heritage of technology, engineering, and craftsmanship, and feature new material and design technology to meet and exceed the requirements of the serious golfer for looks, feel and ball flight.

“True to our mission of providing superior high performance golf clubs, the introduction of the new Pro Titanium 905T and 905S drivers enables Titleist to better fit the serious golfer with improved launch, spin and flight characteristics” said Chris McGinley, Vice President, Titleist Golf Club Marketing Worldwide. “The new 905 drivers allow players to increase their initial launch angle while reducing spin, resulting in optimum ball flight and increased carry distance.”

The new 905 drivers feature an innovative multi material design including a CNC milled, high grade, structural aluminum hosel tube, precise cast titanium body, and a thin, high-strength beta titanium face insert. This construction allows for unproductive mass to be removed from the hosel area and strategically relocated into internal weight pads, creating a more optimal center of gravity. The plasma welded beta titanium face insert is supported by a thin outer face flange, and produces higher ball speed and the maximum allowable Coefficient of Restitution. The cleaner plasma weld process eliminates weld material in the face to create a more efficient overall weight distribution.

“The optimum weight distribution in the Pro Titanium 905 drivers creates a center of gravity that is both lower and closer to face center,” said Jeff Meyer, Director of Metalwood Design and Development. “This produces a higher initial launch angle and lower spin for increased distance and a larger peak ball speed area across the face. For both the competitive and aspiring golfer, a higher launch angle means increased distance through improved trajectory. For the stronger player, reduced spin means distance with a flatter, more controlled downrange trajectory.”

In order to provide all serious golfers with a driver that fits their game, the 905 line consists of two distinct models, the 905T and 905S. The 905T features a larger front-to-back profile size for increased dynamic loft at impact and a slightly higher launch angle than the 905S. The 905S features a deep face design for reduced spin versus the 905T. The larger 400cc head sizes of both the 905T and the 905S offer outstanding playability and their highly accepted true pear profiles are designed to meet the visual requirements of tour professionals and competitive golfers. The traditional crown curvature and face roll and bulge, and the right amount of face progression results in drivers with continuous, balanced and proportionate overall shapes. The raised crown logo and highlights around the face impact area provide for better visual alignment and a confidence building appearance in the playing position.

- CNC Milled 7075 T-6 Aluminum hosel tube replaces bore through mass.
- Mass is moved from the hosel to strategic weight pads in sole and skirt to help produce optimum center CG location.
- Multi material design includes a precise cast titanium body and a thin, high-strength beta titanium face insert.
- Uniform plasma welded SP700 titanium face insert is supported by thin outer face flange for higher ball speed and maximum allowable COR. The uniform face insert thickness provides consistent flexibility across face for better directional performance.
- Cleaner plasma weld process creates more efficient overall weight distribution.
- 400cc head volume for performance and playability
- Highly accepted true pear profile to meet the visual requirements of tour professionals and competitive golfers.
- Raised crown logo and highlights around the face impact area provide for better visual alignment and a confidence building appearance in the playing position.

The 400cc Titleist Pro Titanium 905T features a larger front-to-back profile with a slightly shallower face than its 905S counterpart, and is targeted at all serious golfers, from tour players to aspirational golfers. The low and deep center of gravity produces more dynamic loft for a higher initial launch angle along with low to moderate spin characteristics for optimum playability. The 905T is designed to produce an ideal high launching trajectory, and long, straight downrange flight, and is targeted at all serious golfers seeking a versatile, high performance driver.

The 400cc Titleist Pro Titanium 905S driver is a deep face design with a shallower and more compact front-to-back profile than the 905T. This results in the center of gravity being closer to the face, producing a flatter initial launch angle and less dynamic loft. The deep face in combination with a low center of gravity provides reduced spin. This makes the Pro Titanium 905S ideal for high speed or high spin players who need reduced spin for optimum performance.

Titleist Pro Titanium 905 drivers feature tour-proven shafts including the mid-weight, stiff butt and tip Titleist Speeder by Fujikura (78g); the lightweight, tip stiff, firm feeling Grafalloy Blue (63g), lightweight stiff tip Aldila NV 65 (67g); and the high performance medium tip Graphite Design YS-6 (64g). Standard lofts in the 905T include 7.5, 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 11.5 degrees in right hand, while the 905S includes lofts of and 7.5, 8.5, 9.5 and 10.5 degrees in right hand. Both models feature left hand lofts of 8.5, 9.5 and 10.5 degrees. The standard length for all 905 drivers is 45”, while the stock grip is the new Titleist Tour Velvet Cord with chrome paint fill. As with all Titleist high performance golf club products, a full line of shaft and grip options are available through Titleist Custom.

Titleist Pro Titanium 905 drivers carry a suggested retail price of $500 and commence shipping to golf shops on April 1, 2005.

“The Titleist driver product and performance heritage comes from a strict development blueprint that starts with ‘getting the product right’ before we release it to the marketplace,” comments McGinley. “With every Titleist high performance product, including the Titleist Pro Titanium 905 drivers, golfers can be sure that it has been thoroughly tested at Titleist’s state-of-the art Oceanside Test Facility, and more importantly, player-tested and proven on golf’s most competitive battlefield – the PGA Tour – before it reaches golf shops.”

Week in and week out Titleist drivers are among the most played on the U.S. PGA Tour and PGA European tours. The new Pro Titanium 905T is favored by the likes of Ernie Els, who recently captured the Dubai Desert Classic and Qatar Masters in consecutive weeks with the new driver. In addition to Els, the 905T can be found in the bags of Ben Crane, Brad Faxon, Fredrik Jacobson, Tom Kite, Stephen Leaney, Kevin Na, Arron Oberholser, Mark O’Meara, Craig Perks and Steve Stricker among others. The 905S is preferred by Tommy Armour III, Ben Curtis, Robert Gamez, Hunter Haas, Dudley Hart, Zach Johnson, Frank Lickliter, Billy Mayfair, Ryan Palmer, Tom Pernice, Jr. and Camilo Villegas among others. The Titleist Pro Titanium 905 is already the second most played driver model on the 2005 PGA Tour.

“Titleist Pro Titanium 905 drivers meet and exceed the performance and appearance expectations of many of the world’s best players,” said McGinley. “The new 905T and 905S drivers provide serious golfers the opportunity to maximize their driving distance and accuracy by choosing a driver that optimizes their launch angle, spin rate and ball speed. The 905 drivers continue the Titleist tradition of tour-proven high performance while maintaining classic styling and sweet, solid feel.”
