Titleist Expands Line of Vokey Spin Milled Wedges With Introduction of New 54 Degree Options.Full line of Vokey wedges offers increased spin, versatility for golfers of all levels
FAIRHAVEN, MA (August 12, 2005) - Building on the proven success that has made Vokey Design Wedges the most played wedges on the PGA Tour, Titleist expands the Spin Milled line to include the new SM54.10 and SM54.14 models.
Vokey Design Spin Milled wedges are unique products that provide a truly discernible performance option – increased spin. Bob Vokey, Senior Product Development Manager, Titleist, worked directly with Tour players, club professionals and better playing amateurs to create wedges that perform under the most challenging course conditions. Combining feedback from players with years of research and experience, he developed a precisely machined, tight tolerance groove that provides players of all skill levels wedges with high spin, soft feel, and consistency on both full and partial wedge shots.
“The new Spin Milled Wedges give players of all abilities the same performance features and variables tour players enjoy week in and week out,” said Chris McGinley, Vice President of Golf Club Marketing, Titleist. “The deeper grooves and rougher face enable golfers to maximize spin and control on full and partial wedge shots. The option to increase spin performance allows a player to be fit for a Vokey wedge that optimizes the full complement of performance variables – different lofts for yardage gapping, bounce and sole width for turf performance, spin for shot stopping ability, and finish for appearance preference.”
Introduced earlier this year in lofts of 56°, 58° and 60°, the new SM54 models provide serious golfers with another higher spin choice to ensure optimum short game performance and the confidence to successfully execute more challenging short game shots.
The SM54.10 is a sand wedge with medium bounce and a narrow sole that allows the player to open or close it for a variety of shots from grass or sand. It is especially ideal for long bunker shots or firm fairway conditions where the Spin Milled design creates more spin and control into and around the greens.
The combination of 54 degrees of loft and 14 degrees of bounce makes the SM54.14 wedge ideal for soft sand and turf conditions, as well as steeper swinging, more aggressive players. The Spin Milled design also makes this model an excellent full shot fairway wedge by providing more spin and control into and around the greens.
“Bob Vokey has produced some great wedges for Titleist over the years, and the Spin Milled wedges are no exception,” said Titleist ambassador Ernie Els, who relies upon Vokey Design SM54 and SM60 wedges for his success. “This latest model gives me just the right amount of ‘softness’ off the clubface, yet I can still generate all the backspin I need from a variety of distances. I personally think they’re the best wedges on the market today.”
Vokey Spin Milled wedges feature a face and grooves cut by Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) machines. A special circular saw style cutting tool is used to create precise grooves with a steeper draft angle and a tighter edge radius for increased friction. Vokey Spin Milled wedges have 30 percent more groove volume than a conventional wedge which provides more consistent and higher spin, particularly from grassy lies and wet conditions. In fact, during the player-testing process, golfers gained an average of 10 percent more spin in dry conditions and up to 85 percent more spin in wet conditions than other wedges.
All Vokey Design Spin Milled wedges are available in both right and left hand and feature a new classic Tour Chrome finish with a Tour-preferred, reduced glare satin appearance. The True Temper Dynamic Gold S200 is the stock shaft with a Titleist Tour Velvet Full Cord Round grip. Additional shaft and grip options are available through the Titleist Custom Department.
The new Vokey Design Spin Milled 54.10 and 54.14 wedges begin shipping to golf shops September 1, 2005 with a suggested retail price of $125.
