Titleist Ambassador Brad Faxon Wins 2005 Payne Stewart AwardAward presented annually to PGA TOUR player who reflects Stewart's leadership, professionalism and integity on and off the golf course.
Brad Faxon was named the recipient of the 2005 Payne Stewart Award this week at the TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola. The award, created by the PGA TOUR Policy Board, honors Stewart, an 11-time winner on the PGA TOUR who died the week of the TOUR Championship in 1999.
The award is presented annually to a player sharing Stewart's respect for the traditions of the game, his commitment to uphold the game's heritage of charitable support and his professional and meticulous presentation of himself and the sport through his dress and conduct. Jay Haas, also a full-line Titleist staff player, received the award last year.
"When I first heard about the Payne Stewart Award, I thought it would be a great thing to win some day," said Faxon. "This is like winning a major off the golf course. I hope every young guy on the PGA TOUR tries to win the Payne Stewart Award.”
The CVS Charity Classic, founded and operated by Faxon and his friend and fellow PGA TOUR competitor, Billy Andrade, is entering its eighth year as one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in New England. Since its inaugural event in 1999, the CVS Charity Classic has raised nearly $6.5 million for charity, including $1.5 million in 2005 alone. Faxon and Andrade also run Brad Faxon/Billy Andrade Charities for Children, Inc., which supports youngsters in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The organization received the 1999 Golf Writers Association of America Charlie Bartlett Award, given to golf professionals for their unselfish contributions to society.
"Brad embodies the true spirit of this award through his leadership, integrity and professionalism on and off the golf course, and will continue to be a great role model for the next generation of young golfers," said Wally Uihlein, Chairman and CEO, Acushnet Company. "The same qualities that earned him this great honor have made him an exemplary representative for the Titleist and FootJoy brands for over 23 years. On behalf of all of our associates, we congratulate him on this wonderful achievement.”
In addition to a sculpture presented to the recipient, the Payne Stewart Award is accompanied by an annual Payne Stewart Award Grant presented by Southern Company. The $300,000 grant will support several initiatives in Stewart’s name.
