Don Doolittle Uses Home Course Knowledge to Shoot Hole-In-OneOffers Firsthand Account of First Ace
Friday, September 23, 2005 - I was playing golf at Great Oaks Country Club, where I have been a member for 20 years. Located pretty much in my back yard, I play the course just about every day except Mondays when the course is closed. That particular Friday I was playing with three friends – two of whom I golf with about 3-4 times a week. The fourth in our group is also a good friend, and my personal physician, Dr. Joe.
At the good doctor’s suggestion, we were playing from the black (back) tees and the first two holes, I was even par. We arrived at the par-3 third hole, playing about 212 yards from the back. I used my Cobra 4+ wood and a Titleist Pro V1x ball. (By the way, I also had on FootJoy shoes, a FootJoy glove, and have a Titleist bag and umbrella). The pin was back left, tucked behind a bunker guarding the front of the green.
When I hit the shot, it looked like it was heading right for the pin, but we could not actually see the hole from the tee. Dr. Joe jumped up and down several times, saying he thought the ball went in the hole. Once everyone hit their tee shot, we drove up to the green. I looked around, shocked not to see the ball on the green. Finally, prepared to take a drop, I looked in the hole only to find my ball at the bottom of the cup! I jumped up and down, screamed and then gave my wife a call on a cell phone to tell her that I got my first hole in one! (She did the same for me when she got her first hole in one last summer!). Fortunately Dr. Joe was there with me in case the excitement got to be too much!
After the hole in one, it was a little difficult to settle down and resume the round. I didn’t have a record round (only an 84), but it was well worth it to have a hole in one. There were not a lot of people at the club that day, so I collected a nice cash prize in the pro shop. I am planning to buy new Titleist irons with the money!
By the way, the weekend my hole in one, my partner and I won our flight at the Great Oak’s fall member-member tournament and then won the 12 team shoot-out between all the flights’ winners (men and women) after the tournament. It was just an amazing 7 days of golf culminating with my hole in one!
In all the 30 years I have been playing golf, I have never even seen a hole in one. It is such a great feeling – especially since I practice quite a bit and truly love the game. I have used Titlest balls, clubs and bags for 30 years, have had Cobra clubs for 15 years, and don’t believe I have ever owned golf shoes that were not FootJoys. Over the years my handicap has gone from a 30 to an 11 – and I can truthfully say that the Titleist and Cobra clubs and Titleist Pro V1x balls have helped my game immensely.
