Lucky Wedge Comes Up Aces Again for Andy Mincer

Retired Navy officer records second hole-in-one with lucky Vokey wedge

I am a 67 year old retired Navy officer who has been playing golf for about 35 years. Since I was introduced to the game by my neighbor, a Marine Staff Sargeant back in Beaufort, SC, I've continued to improve and have had my handicap as low as a three. For the past six years, I have been living and playing golf at The Plantation at Leesburg (northwest of Orlando, FL). It is a warm, wonderful, gated retirement community of some 3,000 homes with two championship golf courses. I play about five days a week and often sneak out for an "emergency" nine holes in the evening when necessary.

During one particularly lovely Saturday in the Fall of '05, I was playing the Plantation's Otter Creek course with two of my regular playing partners. We were also joined by a lady from my church (a good omen?) who also happens to be a pretty good player. When we arrived at hole number four, we were pleased to find the tee forward, with the pin placed in the front of the green. Playing 115 yards I reached for my lucky 54 degree Vokey raw steel wedge and teed up my ball of choice - the Titleist HVC "Soft Feel". I love all of my Titleist equipment, but I have a special affinity for this wedge, especially since it helped me record an ace just a few months prior!

The shot felt great. It had a nice arc, landed softly about three feet right of the cup, spun left, and disappeared! My first thought was - FINALLY! I get to collect from the hole-in-one club I've paid into for the past 6 years. I must have still had that thought in my mind when I SHANKED my tee shot about 50 yards on the next hole...using the same ball!

This was actually my sixth ace spanning a 30 year period, including my second in less than six months and second with this Vokey wedge. My most recent one before this was in May on the adjoining course in our community during a charity tournament. That one, however, was almost as disappointing as it was exciting. Not only did that course not qualify for the community's hole-in-one money, but the hole I aced didn't count for any of the tourament's closest to the pin prizes, including a new golf cart for anyone that scored a hole-in-one on any of the other par-3's on the course! So needless to say, I was anxious to collect on my most recent ace.

I have been playing Titleist DCI 981 irons (3-W) for the past six months. I had DG R400 shafts put in them just after I bought them and they are the sweetest irons I've ever played. In addition to the extremely lucky 54 degree Vokey noted above, I also carry a 58 degree Vokey raw steel SW and a Scotty Cameron Studio Design 2 putter. After many years of tweaking my equipment, I have finally assembled a bag with which I am totally satisfied.

Thanks Titleist... you've done good!
