Inside the Ropes with John Merrick

Posted: June 26, 2007

We walked a few holes with Titleist ambassador John Merrick during a recent practice round (click here for photos from the round). John is a PGA Tour rookie who graduated from the Nationwide Tour after a successful 2006 season, which included a playoff win at the Peek'n Peak Classic. After finishing 21st on the Nationwide Tour money list last year, John became the first player in Tour history to improve his priority status by finishing tied for fourth at the PGA Tour Qualifying School.

John plays a full bag of Titleist equipment, including the Pro V1x golf ball, 907D2 driver (8.5°, Aldila NV 75), PT 906F3 prototype fairway (15°, Aldila NV 85), PT 585.H utility (19°, Aldila NV 105), Forged 670 irons (3-P, True Temper Dynamic Gold), Vokey Design prototype wedges (54° & 60°, True Temper Dynamic Gold), and a Scotty Cameron Newport putter.

From the Bank of America Championship

Posted: June 22, 2007

Jay Haas hits a drive during his Pro-Am round. Click here to check out more photos from the Bank of America Championship...

It was a beautiful day at Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord, Massachusetts today, site of this week's Bank of America Championship. The weather update is notable only because last year it became just the second event in Champions Tour history to be completely washed out due to weather. The BOA is the longest running 54-hole event on the senior circuit, with this being the 27th year.

We caught up with Jay Haas during today's Pro-Am. He was very positive about the PT 585.H utility metals. He said he put the 21° in his bag a little over a year ago to replace his 3-iron. He also has a 585.H 17° that he puts in to replace a 19° fairway metal depending on wind and course conditions. He loves the straight ball flight he gets off the tee and from the fairway with the 585s. And he isn't the only one. Check out the 585s in the staff bag photos of Haas, Peter Jacobsen and Curtis Strange. Jake only has one in this image because he was practicing with the other. His caddie pointed it out and said, "that's his new favorite toy."

In addition to adding a couple of hybrids to his set composition, Peter Jacobsen said he also switched to Project X shafts in his irons. He said he went to the new shafts to help with his ball flight after returning from his hip replacement surgery.

Jay, who hasn't played in any PGA TOUR events this year, said he is committed to the Champions Tour. He loves it out here, but has set a goal to still try and qualify for the majors by winning events on the Champions Tour (Senior PGA, Senior PLAYERS Championship, Senior U.S. Open, Senior British Open).

Nearly 70 percent of all players on the Champions Tour play either the Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball. Even more impressive is the fact that Titleist players have won 11 of the first 14 events this year. Note the photo with buckets of Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls on the practice range ... they're the only practice balls on the range this week.

Titleist at the PGA Professional National Championship

Posted: June 22, 2007

The Titleist Tour Van made a special trip this week to Central Oregon for the PGA Professional National Championship at Sunriver Resort. The PNC is widely considered the most prestigious championship for PGA Professionals, and we wanted to be on hand to offer a Tour-level experience for the 312 players in the field, many of whom are important business partners as well as full-line Titleist staff players. With twice the number of players to service than at a regular PGA Tour event, we also had the Titleist FittingWorks Tour Van and 15 club fitting specialists on-site to ensure that we were able to meet every player's needs. Be sure to check out the photo gallery from the PNC...

Billy Mayfair with the New 907 Drivers

Posted: June 20, 2007

Titleist ambassador Billy Mayfair was working with both the new 907D1 and 907D2 drivers today on the practice range. After playing the Pro Titanium 905R for 13 of the first 14 tournaments this year, he has had the 907D1 in the bag for three consecutive weeks, which included a T13 finish at the Memorial. "Both are very good," said Mayfair after hitting the drivers for a good 15 minutes. "With the 907D1, I drive the ball a lot straighter and it keeps the ball flight down for me which is great when the fairways are hard and fast. I'm working with the 907D2 to use on days when it's wet and soft because I get more carry distance. I really like both."

Billy Mayfair practices with a Titleist 907D1 driver on the range in Hartford.

Another long, straight drive with the 907D1.
