From the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational

Posted: August 3, 2007

We were able to catch up with a lot of players this week at Firestone Country Club as they prepared for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. It's an important stretch right now on the PGA Tour, with the PGA Championship next week at Southern Hills and the FedEx Cup playoffs beginning two weeks later at the Barclays Classic in New York. Everyone's working hard to make sure they're on top of their game. Be sure to check out the photos of the action from earlier this week.

Titleist ambassador Adam Scott pulls some ProV1s from his bag to use on the putting green.

What distance does Adam Scott usually hit his 8-iron?

Robert Sellman

Stock 8-iron distance for Adam is 160 yards.

The 50° Vokey wedge that Adam uses effectively serves as his pitching wedge. Voke recommends a 4° - 6° gap between wedges, and with Adam's 9-iron at 44°, he achieves this with the 50° pitching/gap wedge, a 55° sand wedge, and a 60° lob wedge. For more on Titleist's wedge fitting methodology, developed with Bob Vokey, visit .

Most of our Tour players replace their wedges every six months, on average. Resharpening grooves is not recommended as wear to the wedge affects the face as well as the grooves. Groove depth is probably more important than the sharpness of the groove in imparting spin on the ball from the rough or sand. Wear on the face decreases the effective depth of the grooves and, as such, wedges should be replaced when the faces get worn.

Adam often alters his set composition depending on the types of shots he will need to hit at a particular venue. Don't be surprised to see the 585.H utility back in his bag at some point. The 905R is an extremely good driver that Adam has achieved a lot of success with and has a lot of confidence in. Additionally, we are able to optimize Adam's launch conditions and driver performance with both the the 905R and the 907D2, so he is able to choose the driver that he feels most confident with on any given week.

What is Adam's launch angle and spin rate with his driver combination as well as his rough swing speed?

Does Nick Watney use a cross-handed grip (left hand low) for his putting?

Robert Sellman

As shown in the slideshow picture, Nick does, in fact, use a cross-handed grip to putt.
