Team Titleist Ticket Winners: The Greenbrier Classic, U.S. Senior Open

Posted: July 27, 2010

The newest event on the PGA Tour, The Greenbrier Classic, kicks off for the first time Thursday at The Old White Course in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va.

The Old White Course is part of The Greenbrier Resort, a piece of America steeped in golf history. Sam Snead, who won a record 82 PGA Tour events, served at the resort's longtime teaching professional, as well as Golf Professional Emeritus from 1993 until his death in 2002. "Slammin' Sammy" recorded his final hole-in-one on No. 18 at The Old White Course.

The resort's Greenbrier Course hosted the 1979 Ryder Cup and 1994 Solheim Cup.

"It's great," said Titleist Brand Ambassador Brendon De Jonge, currently 34th in the FedEx Cup Point Standings. "I think any time there's history at a venue it's definitely gonna attract a stronger field. A lot of guys have studied on the history of golf, and I know how beloved Sam Snead was in this area having gone to school close by. It's pretty cool we can come to a place like this."

Team Titleist members K. Robinson and A. Hayes won tickets to this event through Team Titleist and will be attending the event courtesy of The Greenbrier Classic.

TV coverage of the tournament is as follows (all times ET):

• Thursday, July 29: 3-6 p.m. (Golf Channel)
• Friday, July 30: 3-6 p.m. (Golf Channel)
• Saturday, July 31: 3-6 p.m. (CBS)
• Sunday, August 1: 3-6 p.m.(CBS)

For more information about the tournament or to purchase tickets, please visit http://www.greenbrierclassic.com/.

On the other side of the country, in Sammarish, Wash., the 31st U.S. Senior Open will be played at Sahalee Country Club, where Pro V1 loyalist Berhard Langer will try to win back-to-back major championships.

Last week, Langer won the Senior Open Championship at Royal Birkdale by a shot over Pro V1 loyalist Corey Pavin.

This will be the first USGA Championship played at Sahalee, home to the Sahalee Players Championship, a major amateur event. Sahalee also hosted the 1998 PGA Championship.

Team Titleist members E. Zimmerman, S. Bevins and J. Bender won tickets to this event through Team Titleist and will be attending the event courtesy of The Greenbrier Classic.

TV coverage of the tournament is as follows (all times ET):
• Thursday, July 29, 1-5 p.m. (ESPN)
• Friday, July 30, 1-5 p.m. (ESPN)
• Saturday, July 31, 3-6 p.m. (NBC)
• Sunday, Aug. 1, 3-6 p.m. (NBC)

Thrilling Victories Around the World for Pro V1, Pro V1x Players

Posted: July 26, 2010

Titleist was the overwhelming golf ball of choice on all of the major worldwide professional tours this week, leading to four important and exciting victories for Pro V1 and Pro V1x players. In 2010, Titleist golf ball players have recorded 75 victories around the world, more than four times the nearest competitor with 16:

• Pro V1 loyalist Bernhard Langer conquered the cranky links of Carnoustie to win his first senior major championship Sunday at the Senior Open Championship.

Langer (Pro V1) relied on a sturdy short game down the stretch, including a key up-and-down for par on the 471-yard par-4 15th, to play his final nine holes in even par and hold off Pro V1 loyalist and U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin (Pro V1) by a shot.

Carrying a two shot lead, Langer decided to lay up with his second shot on the par-4 18th, which played as the second most difficult hole of the week in Scotland, figuring Pavin would have a difficult time making birdie.

He guessed right, as Pavin's lengthy birdie try stopped 5 feet short. Langer two-putted from 12 feet for the victory.

"This ranks very high," said Langer, who closed with a 2-over 72 to finish at 5-under 279. "Obviously it was pretty close to my two U.S. Masters championships and some of The Ryder Cup stuff I won and those things, but it's definitely in the top 10 and it's a thrill to finally hold this trophy."

Langer was one of 107 players in the Senior Open that trusted a Titleist golf ball, more than six times the nearest competitor with 16. Titleist was also first in Iron Sets (34) and All Wedges (119).

• The sound of Jiyai Shin's Pro V1 hitting the bottom of the cup Sunday on Evian Masters Golf Club's 18th hole was loud and clear.

Shin's 8 1/2-foot birdie putt not only earned her a one-shot victory at the Evian Masters, it also moved her back to No. 1 in the world ranking, a spot she had lost while recovering from an emergency appendectomy early last month.

Shin closed with a bogey-free 5-under 67, coming from two shots behind at the start of the final round in southeastern France.

"Sometimes the pressure leads to my tempo getting fast," said Shin, 22. "So I was thinking, just normal putt, just normal putt."

Shin was one of 71 players in the field that trusted a Titleist golf ball, more than five times the nearest competitor with 12.

• The celebration of the week went to Richard S. Johnson, who rolled in his Pro V1x from 30 feet on the 72nd hole of the Nordea Scandinavian Masters to become just the second Swedish player to win the event in the last 12 years.

Johnson closed with a 1-under 71 at Stockholm’s Bro Hof Slott for an 11-under 277 total and one-shot victory, punctuated by a hearty fist-pump and his caddie Anders Timell, a Swedish radio DJ, jumping on his back.

"It's one of the sweetest things I've ever done," Johnson said of his second European Tour victory. "Just to come up the 17th and 18th is magical. "This is a huge tournament to win for a Swede and I'm speechless right now. It's epic."

Three players tied for fourth place at 8-under 280, including Titleist Brand Ambassador Brett Rumford (Pro V1x, prototype 910D2 driver, 909F3 fairway metal, 909H hybrid, CB irons, Vokey Design wedges) and last week's Open Championship winner Louis Oosthuizen (Pro V1x), who made a strong bid in his effort to become the only player to win a Tour event the week after winning the Open Championship.

Johnson was one of 96 players at the Nordea Scandinavian Masters that trusted a Titleist golf ball, three times the nearest competitor with 32.

• Pro V1x loyalist D.J. Brigman rallied to win the Children's Hospital Invitational at The Ohio State University's Scarlet Course, closing with a 7-under 64 for a one-shot victory, his first on the Nationwide Tour since 2003.

The victory vaulted Brigman from No. 47 to No. 6 on the Nationwide Tour money list, in favorable position to earn his 2011 PGA Tour Card.

"This is the best of the best," Brigman told PGATour.com. "This reinforces that I'm on the
right path and I questioned that for a long time."

Brigman was one of 88 players at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational that trusted a Titleist golf ball, more than five times the nearest competitor with 17. Titleist also was first in Iron Sets (36); Sand, Lob and Approach Wedges (110) and Putters (56).

• At the RBC Canadian Open, 106 players trusted Titleist golf balls, more than six times the nearest competitor with 16, including nine of the players that finished fourth or better.

Titleist was also first in Iron Sets (47), Sand, Lob and Approach Wedges (140) and Putters (72).

Titleist Brand Ambassadors Greg Chalmers (Pro V1x, prototype 910D3 driver, 909F2 fairway metal, 909H hybrid, CB irons, Vokey Design wedges), Charley Hoffman (Pro V1, 909D2 driver, MB irons, Vokey Design wedges, Scotty Cameron Red X putter) and Michael Letzig (Pro V1x, prototype 910D3 driver, MB irons, Vokey Design wedges, Scotty Cameron prototype putter) -- all fired final-round 5-under 65's to earn a share of fourth place at 10-under 270 with six other players, including fellow Titleist Brand Ambassador Bryce Molder (Pro V1x, 909D3 driver, 909F2 fairway metal, MB irons, Vokey Design wedges, Scotty Cameron Newport 2.7 Studio Select putter).

A closer look at Michael Letzig's new Vokey wedge

Posted: July 23, 2010

Check out Titleist Brand Ambassador Michael Letzig's new 60V Black Oxide Vokey Design Spin Milled Wedge (C-C), fresh from Vokey's workshop.

The wedge features two TVD (Tour Vokey Design) Red weight ports (Letzig's wedges are usually long so they are ported to get the correct swingweight) on both sides of the Titleist script, TVD Red/White Tour Saw toe engraving and some some cool custom stamping.

Letzig likes to mix up his colors, having gone with blues, purples and several other colors in some of his old wedges. The red No. 1 with the white circle around it is a shout-out to the Cigarette racing boats, of which Letzig is a big fan.

The Vokey team sent a picture of the wedge last night to Letzig, who replied "Nice! That is the best yet!"

Letzig is playing in this week's RBC Canadian Open, where he is 4 under after the first two rounds (66-70).

Gallery: Preparing for the RBC Canadian Open

Posted: July 22, 2010

At this week's RBC Canadian Open on the PGA Tour, 106 players trust Titleist golf balls, more than six times the nearest competitor with 16. Titleist is also first in iron sets (47), sand, lob and approach wedges (140) and putters (72).

Photographer Greg Moore, a loyal Team Titleist member, was on the scene earlier this week at St. George's Golf & Country Club in Toronto, where the event is being hosted for the first time since 1968.

As usual, Greg kindly sent along some of his inside-the-ropes photos from the practice rounds for us to enjoy.
