**UPDATE: Ben Crane Adds Distance, Finds Winner's Circle with Titleist 910D2 Driver and New Bassara W Shaft
Posted: October 18, 2011
Looking to add more distance off the tee, Titleist Brand Ambassador Ben Crane made an adjustment to his Titleist 910D2 driver that helped him to his fourth PGA Tour victory.
For several years, Ben has been working with Titleist Performance Institute co-founder Greg Rose to regain ball speed he lost while suffering from back injuries.
During a recent fitting session with Larry Bobka, Titleist VP of Club Promotion, Ben put a new Bassara W 50 for Titleist driver shaft in his 910D2 and promptly recorded his first top 10-finish on the PGA Tour since April at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital Open.
Two weeks later, Ben followed it up with a final-round 7-under 63 and playoff victory at The McGladrey Classic.
At 53 grams, the Bassara W is one of the lightest shafts to ever win on Tour.
"We built this particular driver configuration based on a conversation with Greg Rose and Ben's desire for more distance," Bobka told Team Titleist. "Being a straight hitter with a delicate back, Ben needed a driver that created what I call 'easy distance.' "
The 910D2 with less loft (7.5º) than Ben's previous driver and the SureFit Tour hosel set at B•2 (standard loft, +.75º upright, coupled with the longer (46") and lighter (53g) configuration of the Bassara W 50 for Titleist shaft helped Ben create more distance along with excellent launch conditions.
“Ben sent me a text after Vegas and said ‘Love it, bombing it baby,’ " Bobka said. "After his win at Sea Island he sent another one that said, ‘That driver you made me is so good... I have a lot more scoring opportunities.’”
Below are the specifications of Ben's new driver:
• 910D2 7.5º (B•2 SureFit Tour hosel setting)
• Titleist Bassara W 50-X (standard tipping)
• D5 swingweight
• New Decade Green/Black 60R (logo underneath)
The Bassara W super-lightweight shafts, developed for Titleist by Mitsubishi Rayon, feature elastic titanium nickel wire technology for a more responsive tip section. The titanium nickel wire, which is widely used in eye glass frames, bends easily but quickly recovers to its original shape to promote high launch with good stability.
As with the Diamana for Titleist series, the Bassara W series matches shaft flex with specific torque values for great feel.
Bassara W for Titleist shaft options are available for all 910 metals via custom order at no upcharge.
