Erik Compton Awarded the 2012 Mildred “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias Courage Award

Posted: November 9, 2012

Titleist Brand Ambassador and two-time heart transplant recipient Erik Compton was awarded the 2012 Mildred “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias Courage Award by the United States Sports Academy on Wednesday. Compton is playing in the PGA TOUR's season-ending Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic in Orlando this week.

The Courage Award is presented annually "to an individual who demonstrates courageous action in overcoming adversity to excel in sport. This individual should exhibit the qualities of courage, perseverance, grace, and strength in sport achievement."

Compton is the only professional golfer in the world to compete with a transplanted heart. The 33-year-old has had three different hearts in his life but that hasn’t stopped him from achieving his dream of earning his TOUR card and playing on the PGA Tour.  Zaharias, too, was a golfer, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1953, and one month after undergoing surgery, she won her 10th and final major with a U.S. Women’s Open Championship.

“I hope that by sharing my experience others can see the importance of finding out more about organ donation,” Compton said. “After my second transplant, I knew I wasn’t done with golf and consider when I made the cut in the 2008 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic less than six months later to start my comeback. That makes receiving this award at this tournament all that much more meaningful to me.”

The PGA Tour honored Compton for coming back from heart surgery during The Masters in April 2009, awarding him the Ben Hogan Award.

Poulter, Lehman and Lewis Highlight Four-Win Week for Titleist Golf Ball Loyalists

Posted: November 5, 2012

It was another action-packed weekend across the worldwide professional tours with the phrase "come-from-behind win" echoing across two tours and two countries. At the WGC-HSBC Champions in China, Pro V1x loyalist Ian Poulter birdied eight of his final 18 holes to overcome a four-shot deficit and earn his second-career World Golf Championships title. While on the LPGA Tour, Pro V1x loyalist Stacy Lewis provided final-round heroics of her own, rallying from seven shots back to win the Mizuno Classic in Japan.

On the Champions Tour, Pro V1 loyalist Tom Lehman became the first player to win the season-long Charles Schwab Cup in consecutive years with a record-breaking performance. Pro V1x loyalist Doug McGuigan secured a 1-up victory in the ISPS Handa Match Play Championship on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa. And rounding out the weekend's successes, the 14-year-old winner of the Asia-Pacific Amateur trusted a Pro V1x golf ball in earning a trip to the 2013 Masters.

Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x players have now won 170 times across the worldwide professional tours in 2012, more than eight times the nearest competitor with 21 and more than all competitors combined.

WGC: Titleist Pro V1x golf ball loyalist Ian Poulter closed with a 7-under-par 65 to rally from four strokes back to win the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shenzhen, China. Poulter carded eight birdies in the final round to finish with a 21-under 267 victory total, two shots clear of four players, including Titleist Brand Ambassadors Jason Dufner and Scott Piercy.

The win was Poulter's second World Golf Championship victory – he also captured the Accenture Match Play Championship in 2010 – and the 14th of his professional career.

Third round co-leaders and fellow Pro V1x loyalists, Lee Westwood and Louis Oosthuizen, shot identical final-round scores of even-par 72 to finish in a tie for sixth place. Westwood put himself atop the leaderboard on Saturday with a third round 11-under 61. Oosthuizen was 16 under after two rounds, recording the lowest 36-hole score in a WGC event since they began in 1999.

Titleist Brand Ambassadors Adam Scott and Bill Haas finished solo eighth and 10th, respectively, as seven of the top 10 finishers relied upon Titleist golf balls for their success.

Titleist was the most played golf ball with 46 players in the field of 78, more than four times the nearest competitor with 10. Titleist was also first in iron sets (22) and sand, lob and approach wedges (72).

LPGA: Titleist Pro V1x golf ball loyalist Stacy Lewis fired a final round 8-under par 64 en route to a come-from-behind, one-shot win at the Mizuno Classic. Lewis, who was seven shots back to start the day, finished with an 11-under-par 205 victory total for her fourth win of the season and fifth of her career. The second-ranked women's player in the world, Lewis also won the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic, ShopRite LPGA Classic and Navistar LPGA Classic this year.

Lewis edged second-round leader Bo-Mee Lee (Pro V1), who closed with an even-par 72, while women's world No. 1 Yani Tseng (Pro V1x) posted a final-round 68 to finish solo fourth at 7-under 209.

Titleist was the most played golf ball with 38 players, nearly three times the nearest competitor with 13.

CHAMPIONS:  Titleist Pro V1 loyalist Tom Lehman captured the Charles Schwab Cup Championship to become the first player to win the season-long points title in back-to-back years. After taking a one-stroke lead into the final round, Lehman birdied four of the last five holes to close with a 5-under 65 for a six-stroke win. His 22-under 258 total broke the tournament mark for lowest score and tied the record in relation to par.

Lehman's win marks the 17th for Titleist golf ball players over the 23-event schedule on the 2012 Champions Tour, more than eight times the nearest competitor with two.

Titleist Brand Ambassador Jay Haas, who closed with a 69 to shoot four consecutive rounds in the 60's, finished solo second. Haas matched the Champions Tour record with a second round 10-under par 60, which also broke the course record on Desert Mountain's Cochise layout.

Jay Don Blake (Pro V1x), the defending champion and first-round leader after opening with a 64, finished solo third, as Titleist golf ball loyalists posted a 1-2-3 finish in the season finale.

Of the 30 players in the exclusive field, 23 teed up a Titleist, more than seven times the nearest competitor with three. Titleist was also the top choice in the iron (7), sand, lob and approach wedge (22) and putter (9) categories.

SUNSHINE TOUR: Pro V1x loyalist Doug McGuigan earned his fifth-career win in South Africa, posting a 1-up victory in the 18-hole final of the ISPS Handa Match Play Championship. The event was the first utilizing the match-play format on the Sunshine Tour schedule in 25 years.

Of the 112 players who went head-to-head this week, 82 players in the field relied upon Titleist golf balls for their success, more than three times the nearest competitor with 25.

ASIA-PACIFIC AMATEUR:  In the field of 120 at the Asia-Pacific Amateur, 94 players, including the 14-year old winner (Pro V1x), relied upon a Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball for their success, more than nine times the nearest competitor with 10 and more than all competitors combined. The winner of the event earned an invitation to the 2013 Masters Tournament.

Titleist was also the top choice in iron sets (34), sand, lob and approach wedges (135) and putters (46).
