This week we travel to Pittsford, N.Y. for the Wegmans LPGA Championship, the penultimate major of the 2014 LPGA season. The event dates back to 1955 and has a tradition of delivering exciting finishes.

Playing host this year is Monroe Golf Club, a classic Donald Ross layout that was founded in 1923. The course will be stretched out to a championship distance of 6,717 yards and will no doubt test the shotmaking skills of the field.

So what will be one of the keys to success this week? Course Management and specifically dialing-in those second shots.

To get a little more perspective on how players might approach the week, we went to our own Team Titleist Staffer and former mini-tour player James “Bubba” Kroeger.

“Developing a strategy for each hole and knowing where you want to land your tee shots is something that is important for every golfer throughout every round,” said Kroeger.

“When you’re playing classic layouts that place a premium on positioning and accuracy with the second shot, it becomes amplified. So developing a game plan for each hole is a great way to help minimize any indecision and encourage a confident swing.”

Exemplifying this challenge is the 488-yard, Par-5 14th hole at Monroe. It is a signature second-shot hole that rewards pinpoint accuracy with a look at eagle. Guarded by the course’s oldest and tallest Oak Tree, a tree-lined fairway leads up to a green surrounded by a collection of sky scraping Oaks.

A quick read of the course description reveals that this green also requires delicate touch.

A steep rise fronting the green and a severe slope from left to right make pitching and putting a true test.”

And short game control starts with golf ball choice.

"It's a lesson for many amateurs," added Kroeger. "Play with a high performance ball that drops and stops rather than a low spin ball that lands and runs out and through the green. This can be the difference between making birdie or bogey."

Good luck to all of #TeamTitleist in the field this week.

BY THE NUMBERS: WEGMANS LPGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Titleist is the overwhelming golf ball of choice with 105 players in the field trusting a Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball for their success. That’s more than 8 times the nearest competitor with 12 and more than all competitors combined.
