A record-setting triumph for Stenson at Royal Troon

“It's not something you want to run around and shout, but I felt like this was going to be my turn. I think that was the extra self-belief that made me go all the way this week.”

These were the words of Titleist golf ball loyalist Henrik Stenson, who relied on his Pro V1 golf ball to turn in one of the great performances in major championship history, capturing his first career major title with a record-setting three-shot victory at The Open.

Stenson was the only player to shoot four rounds in the 60’s at Royal Troon, including a closing 8-under-par 63 en route to a 20-under-par 264 victory total.

“It hasn't quite sunk in yet,” Stenson said after raising the Claret Jug. “I'm very happy. Very proud of the way I played. I knew I had to keep on pushing, keep on giving myself birdie chances. I'm just delighted I managed to do that with a couple of birdies at the right time on the final stretch.”

As for the record books…

  • The victory marked the lowest winning total at an Open and the lowest 72-hole score in major championship history.
  • Stenson’s 63 tied for the lowest closing round by a major champion and his 20-under-par tied for the lowest score in relation to par.
  • His final round included 10 birdies and with the victory, he becomes the first Swede to win a major on the PGA TOUR or PGA European Tour.

Stenson was optimistic when asked if this breakthrough was a sign of more championships to come, replying, “We’re only just getting started, aren't we? You never know once you open the floodgates what might happen. We've got a big schedule this summer. It's PGA in a week's time and then the Olympics. But it's all good things that will happen.”

Congratulations, Henrik!
