The #1 ball at the 2017 U.S. Women's Amateur

This week the most accomplished female amateur golfers in the world have assembled in Southern California to compete for the grandest prize in women's amateur golf, the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.

This marks the third major championship hosted by San Diego Country Club, which last hosted the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1993. The club also hosted the 1964 U.S. Women's Open as well as the PGA Tour's San Diego Open in 1952 and 1953.

Scotsman William Watson (who also designed Interlachen GC in Minnesota and Olympic Club in San Francisco) designed the rolling layout in 1921. The course will measure 6,423 yards in length this week and play to a par-72. The deep bunkers, slick greens and towering eucalyptus trees are the signature features of the course, which opened in 1921.

The low 64 scorers from stroke play will qualify for match play. If necessary, a playoff will be conducted to trim the draw to exactly 64 competitors.

As the players in this elite amateur field of 156 all look to add their name the Cox Cup this year, 133 players are trusting Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls for their success. That’s more than twelve times the nearest competitor with 11 and more than five times all competitors combined.

Titleist also topped the hybrids category (68). Vokey Design wedges were the top choice in the sand, lob and approach wedge (209) category and Titleist Scotty Cameron putters topped the putter (52) category.

FUN FACT: The U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship marks the beginning of women’s competitive golf in this country. Along with the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Open, the Women’s Amateur was one of the USGA’s first three championships.

Although a stroke-play format was selected for the first championship, the Women’s Amateur became a match-play competition in 1896, and has remained so ever since.
