Titleist Brand Ambassador Gaganjeet Bhullar birdied two of his last three holes on Monday to claim his third Asian Tour title at the weather-shortened Yeangder Tournament Players Championship. Bhullar fired a 3-under 69 in the third and final round in Tapei, Taiwan, good for a 12-under 204 total, four strokes clear of two players, including Pro V1x loyalist Thaworn Wiratchant.
Titleist was the top choice of more players in the 144-player Yeangder TPC field in the golf ball category with 97, nearly five times the nearest competitor with 20.
Bhullar, who finished second to Wiratchant last week at the Worldwide Selangor Masters in Malaysia, trusted a Pro V1x golf ball and a full bag of Titleist equipment to capture his first Asian Tour title since winning the Asian Tour International in 2010.
"I believe it was my fighting spirit as I told myself that I've got to win this tournament no matter what happens," said Bhullar after the victory. "I knew I was playing well and I played really well on the par-fives all week."
“I guess this whole week I was totally focused and I was in the zone and if I can repeat what I’ve been doing the last two rounds nobody can even touch me,” added the 24-year-old.
Gaganjeet shot rounds of 66-69-69 in difficult conditions following a typhoon that struck the venue on the second and third days, eventually requiring that the contest be shortened to 54 holes. Starting the final day 1 shot ahead, Gaganjeet pulled away from the pack with a birdie on the first hole and made the turn in 34. Dropped shots on 11 and 13 however saw his lead reduced to 1.
“I’ve been in this position many times on the Asian Tour and after that it was my fighting spirit. I told myself that I had to make another birdie and it came on the 16th,” said Bhullar.
Two birdies in the last 3 holes saw him finish 4 shots ahead of his closest rivals.
The latest Asian Tour statistics see him top of Fairways Hit with 84% and 4th in Greens in Regulation with 76%. Gaganjeet has seen this good form help him to 5 top tens this year.
The win marks Gaganjeet's 3rd Asian Tour win, with his other 2 being at the 2009 Indonesia President Invitational and the 2010 Asian Tour International. Other than these wins, Gaganjeet has performed well on the Professional Golf Tour of India, including 5 wins in 2009, 1 in 2010 and then 3 wins in a row at the start of 2011 Gaganjeet has also played in one Open Championship, in 2009 at Turnberry and represented Asia in the 2010 Royal Trophy.
