I have found that pausing briefly at the top gives me more accuracy on long approach shots.

You absolutely want to finish with your weight on your left leg. Most longer club struggles are due to hanging back, which is a direct result of being slightly out of balance. Try this: As you achieve your finish position, see if you can pick your right foot off the ground. Swing slow, as it can be tough at first. If you can do it easily, your issue is thinking about "hitting the ball" rather than "swinging the club". Swingers have a tendency to hit the ball more solidly, and hitters are either "on" or "off" depending on the particular day.

Combining the last 2 comments - tempo. Transfer weight throughout the swing. Hard to start weight transfer before starting downswing if there is no pause at the top. Swing within your ability, overswinging gets me off tempo every time, and the ball flight is then an adventure.
  5. Tempo is important, but posture is critical.

I had my swing videotaped, and it became immediately obvious that I came up out of my posture at address as my back swing progressed to the top.  I began to lift up and back instead of firmly holding my address position.

This is less of a problem with short irons and wedges because of the shorter length shafts.  But,  with the longer irons, and fairway woods for that matter, the longer shafts require a wider arc on the back swing.  So, it is easy to slip out of posture.  The fix that I employ is to slightly press my weight forward toward the target line, as well as toward the target, as I begin the takeaway.

    The results are amazing.

Try to relax as any tension will kill accuracy and distance. Tempo is key and just swing within your self. Trying to kill the ball will usually end with disaster.

Releasing tension is definitely important. I started to struggle a couple weeks ago because I was getting too tense over the ball. I had a lesson last week and without changing anything else but the tension in my arms, I was able to start hitting the ball well again.
