Hey Everyone, Been a while since I've posted. Fortunately during that time I've gone from a 14 handicap to a 7! One of the biggest factors in cutting my handicap in half was the improvement of my short game, much of which I attribute to my wedge game. I currently carry Titleist Vokey Design 60 degree, 56 degree, and a 52 degree. Playing Titleist AP2's, I also have a Pitching Wedge. I just placed an order for a 48 degree Wedge to replace my Pitching Wedge. I feel so much more confident hitting my Vokey's, so when I have to switch to Pitching Wedge (which looks like more of an iron) I find myself second guessing. Yes, much of this is likely in my head. However I thought it'd be a good idea to give a 48 degree a shot. Anyone else out there done this before?

If you include the AP1 PW, 4.  Vokeys are SM4 54-11 and 60-10 bent 1* strong and 64-07.   I rarely use the 64 (mainly on a couple of the munis with hard greens).

I have done this as well and it works great for me at least. I carry 46,50,54 and 58 Vokey wedges and like the flexibility I have in the 46 over a traditional pitching wedge. One thing I have heard to do is to use the same shaft in the 48 as your 9-iron so the set blends together better. I think you will really enjoy the 48.

I had gone with 48/54/58 because my wedge was 44 prior to my AP1s (45 PW).  Will be resolving that once the AFCs get their LH SM5s.  Definitely prefer the 48 over the PW for partial wings and other feel shots.  I could drop the PW and just choke down on the 9 iron - i rarely use partial swings with it.

I also can't count, so one of the 5 wedge votes should be another 4 wedge vote.

I have the AP2 PW, GW, and two Vokey SM4's:  54-08, and 58-06.  This has been a significant improvement over my previous PW, GW, and SW.  I have the same shafts in all my irons 5-the two Vokeys.

Same here, I carry 46, 50, 54, & 58. Dropped the 45 stock PW and it has helped me a lot. Better spin and it does feel so much better than hitting my AP1 PW. I only used my PW for full swing shots, and it felt clunky on 1/2 or 3/4 swings.

  7. It depends on the course that I'm playing and conditions. Sometimes I'll carry 2-3 wedges, sometimes more...various lofts and bounces.

I carry only 3, that includes the PW an GW from my iron set, and then I have a Vokey 56*.  Keeping it very simple an with less options works well for me.  I don't have second thoughts about which club to use or moments of lacking trust.

Tyson, I totally agree the fewer the better, I carry the same wedges as you ( AP1 pw, AP2 gw & Vokey sw 56)the simpler the better. Thanx for the post-- MADGOLER

Thanks everyone for the input! I'm picking up the 48 Degree Vokey today and adding it to the bag. I love seeing how many people have done this. I have Rifle 5.5 Shafts in all of my irons & wedges, so the new 48 is set up the same way. Only difference at all is I have TVD Wedgeworks with the old grooves on my current wedges, while the new wedges will be the new regulated grooves.

    Matt -

My first post ever on the TT board was when I was considering switching from the "old" grooves on my trusty TVD wedges to the "new" grooves.  I was concerned there wouldn't be the spin, etc. that I was used to from my wedges with the new grooves.  People at TT provided positive feedback and I picked up new TVD wedges with the SM4 grooves.  I was happy with the switch and really didn't notice a difference.  In fact, my old grooves were so worn that I actually increased my spin rate on balls I was hitting with the new wedges.  I am now a couple of wedges down the road from that time and, looking back, should not have been concerned at all.

Good luck and enjoy the new wedge!

Thanks Mike! I'm not too worried about the change in grooves. If the new rules call for V Grooves, then I'm not going to fight change...

    Matt,

Great question.  I love the survey, not sure how you did it, but I like the interactive peice.

I have carried as many as 4 wedges, including the PW, but I usually carry a 56 and 60.  Both Vokey's.

    Have to love the indgo's!

714 AP2 pw, SM4 50, 55, 60 wedges........am not a long iron player but do have the yardage where I feel comfortable........think I will keep this setup for a while.....SM5 look good but if it ain't broken, no need to fix it.......these babies help me shoot a 69 three days after my 67th birthday in September......my career low.....

It's all about having options from 140-in! Consider this... what % of shots do you hit from 140 yards and in? I'd say easily >50%. So then wouldn't you want to have options?

Just 3 for me. 47/53/59.  6 degree gaps between each one.

i find 4 wedges just creates indecision for me

I use a 54 and 58.  Every now and then I throw in a gap wedge but I usually like to take a little of a PW or 9 if I'm outside of sand wedge range.

I said 3 wedges in the poll, since I don't consider my AP2 47* P-club to be a wedge. I play Vokey SM2 (2009 version with old grooves)  in 52-08, 56-11 and 60-07. I have replaced them 2 or 3 times since they came out, with new SM2s.

I too, was afraid of losing spin with the grooves on the newer versions. In doing a lot of research on the matter, have decided, Bob Vokey has had enough time now with the 2010 groove rule to come up with a way to bring all the spin back. As a result, the new SM5s are now in my line of vision, probably during this season.

I too appreciate all the comments! It has given me some more ideas that I hadnt thought of before. I am definately adding more wedges to try to improve my game both shot wise and for different courses and  conditions.

Cant wait till the SM5 come out!

I am Playing 710 MBs and use that Pitching wedge set at 48 degrees. I then play TVD vokey 54 and 60. i used to play a 52 wedge in there but wanted a 3 1ron for long par3s and choke down and can hit a knock down PW at 3/4 and 1/2 to take yardage of it for shots outside my 54 range.

Love reading the responses. Very infromative. We are under a ton of snow here in Ontario Canada so its great to see so many active on the forum to get through the winter.

Great question and happy New Year TT

Great question Matt. My first ever post to TT as I am fairly new and have been enjoying the blogs and discussions. Three wedges for me; mainly because I don't want to give up my 4 iron or my 2 and 3 hybrids. Stock miz 48* PW with Vokey 54* and 60*.

Welcome back Matt, well done on the handicap!

I still carry 2 wedges, a PW and a SW.   I use my PW in so many ways, I swear it is like 14 clubs on its own, my SW is only used in the bunkers around the greens unless the ball is buried.  This seems to work for me, but a lot of the guys I golf with have had the same experience as you, they have improved their game by adding more wedges.  Golf is a great game and can be as unique as each one of us, the important thing is to find what improves "your" game, trial and error ... or as I like to call it "experience" ... is the key.

    I carry 4 including my AP2 PW.

    TVD 60 and 56(bent to 55) and a Vokey 50 (bent to 51)

I have other lofts of wedges in the spare bag if I need to change them up for any reason or add a long iron/wood.

I like having options when inside of 150 yds.
