I am making the change to graphite from steel. Just got fitted for a set of AP1 714 4-GW. I am also changeing my wedge set to 52 & 58 (since the GW in the 714's is 48). Should my 52 & 58 be graphite or should I stay with steel for those ? 52 will be my 100 yard club while the 58 will be greenside bunkers and lob club. Thanks for any imput.

    Hi Marvin,

Thanks for the question and glad to hear you will be getting the new 714's!

Most individuals try to make sure their GW has the same specs as the rest of their irons IF they intend on using the GW as a full shot club, which it sounds like you do.  As for the 58, that is more personal preference.  Some individuals like the extra weight and feel of a steel shaft, where others prefer to have the same specs throughout their entire set.

It's always best to see a local fitter and try both shafts out, but hopefully this information points you in the right direction.

    Take care,

    Bubba

    Bubba,

The AP1 714 iron set that that I got is 4-GW / KuroKage 65 shafts. The GW is 48o......that is about a 110-115 yard club for me. Should the Vokey 52 SM5 F grind that I will use for 90-100 yard shots have a graphite shaft as well? I will also use that club for some shorter shots. I will keep my lob wedge a steel shaft .

    Thanks,

    Marvin

    Hi Marvin,

Again, having a graphite shaft in any wedge is a personal preference and it is always best to try them out first.  With that being said, most times as a fitter I often found individuals preferring a graphite shaft in the first wedge of their set, often the one they used for full shots.

    Keep us up to date.

I changed from steel to Graphite in all my clubs last year. took some time to learn but did improve my game. I really like them in my Wedges and use my 52 a lot. I don't see changing back to steel shafts anytime soon.
