I am considering buying my brother-in-law's 35" Scotty Squareback putter as a gift for my son for after the 2017 golf season. He needs to practice hard, play hard and really step up his game this year to earn it (Fair trade). Golf season starts here in WA in a couple months and want to reward him for a job well done. With that being said, should I send it in to SC Custom Shop to change out the shaft to a shorter 33" shaft and change out the weights or should I just get it cut down and still change the weights? I'm curious if anyone has done this before, seen previous discussions or know if a Kit to make this happen. Thanks for the input.

Send it in to the custom shop!!!
  3. You will definitely need "heavier" weights if you cut it down. You can purchase combo packs of weights off the SC Website. Depending on the final length you may need 15, 20 or even 25's. While you are there, you might as well as pick up a new grip! Have fun!!

Of course, you can always send it in the to custom shop since you have time before the season.

    Good Luck!

20g weights are the standard for a 33" SC putter and it's what they are using in their new Cameron & Crown 33" putters. I'd just buy new weights, a grip and cut it myself. No need to send it in. It's a putter, not a piece of medical equipment. I'm sure your son will love it and do great with it.

  6. One reason to send it in is in the event you need a loft and/or lie correction to the putter since you are changing the dynamics of the putter significantly it may merit a trip to SC Custom Shop. For instance if you are going from 35" to 33" you may need to increase lie angle to 71 or 72, as well as the loft may need to be decreased to 3 or increased to 4 or 5 depending on the type of stroke. I have been fit and I was using a putting we 4 degrees of loft and the high speed video showed that my ball was getting too much backspin and thus throwing it offline even though my stroke mechanics were consistent/solid. This is unfortunately only something a few places can provide such as SC Store in Encinitas CA.

Regardless, heavier weights and a new grip (or reuse the existing grip) and you are on your way!

    Good Luck!!
  7. I would honestly do it myself! I know being big into the the club repair and fitting business I shouldn't recommend that due to the fact that it is a Scotty, but it's hard when it's youth because sending it in can get expensive and who know maybe in a couple years he wants something more like a futura. So I'd save the money cut it down throw a grip on it and some 20-25 gram weights!
