Thanks...  I will take a shot at this.

    I currently play the 712 AP1's and a 913 D2 Driver. I carry 3 wedges as well.

My plan in the spring is to switch out my #2 Rescue (19') club with a new Titleist option.

What I am not sure about is which option is the best replacement for me? I currently use the Rescue from the tee on shorter par fours when the fairways are tight, and also from the deck when trying to reach the par fives in two. The rescue is not that great in thicker rough, but plays well in the first cut or off the fairway.

I was wondering what I should be looking at as a replacement. Would I be better to try the 913 U series, or the 913 F series?

Sorry - My TM 2 Rescues is 16' not 19' as I typed in earlier. I am sure that would make a huge difference in club selection.

I thought I would also note that a regular hit from the deck would be around 220 yds, while I have reached almost 250 yds from a low tee when on the tee blocks. The ball flight is generally very low and penetrating so when it lands, the ball runs a fair piece.

    Darius,

In that case, I would try a 17 913F and 17 913H for the same reasons above!

    Thanks,

    Hi Darius,

    I would try both a 19 913H and 19 913F.

    Benefits of a 913H:

-Provides a hybrid like feel that you are accustomed to with your current hybrid.

-Adjustability with the Surefit Tour hosel.  I like to match hybrid specs (Length/Lie) with a players current iron specs.  A hybrid is meant to be hit like an iron, therefore using the correct lie angle and length is important.

    Benefits of a 913F:

-Can provide more ball speed, higher launch angle, and more forgiveness than a hybrid (at the same loft).

When testing, I would evaluate each model based on tee, fairway, and rough performance.  But place emphasis on rough performance, as that is an area that your current hybrid could improve.

    I hope this helps!

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hey Chris,

I currently play 51 55 and 59 degree wedges, and I'm looking to upgrade. I play my 59 out of the bunker primarily, and from 90 yards and in, play the 55 from 95-105, and my 51 from 110-120. Just wondering what degrees of bounce you would recommend for these clubs.

    Hi Adam,

Without seeing you hit shots, if you are happy with the bounce of your current wedges I would duplicate them with your new wedges.

To play the same lofts you have now, would require playing Vokey SM5 at 1 degree strong or weak.

I usually recommend going 1 degree weak because it adds 1 degree more bounce and takes away offset (the opposite effect for 1 strong)

A safe bet is going with medium bounce, which can prevent digging but still playable from tight lies.

    I hope this helps!

    Chris

Hi Chris, I'm looking to buy some 714 Ap2 irons in the next couple of weeks before the golf season starts. I was wondering if there is any Titleist Authorized Fitting Facility near Kelowna British Columbia. The only golf fitting place I can find so far is Golftown, and I was wondering if they are Titleist Authorized Fitting Partners. And if you know anywhere else I could go to get fitted. Thanks, Graham

This may be a silly question but...... I recently got a demo set of 712 AP1's (5-GW). They are shafted with Tour AD50i, L flex. Would it be better for me to have them fitted at Golftown or is it worth taking them to a Titleist fitting centre? I'm a 20 handicapper (52 yrs woman, only played 4 yrs) and am looking forward to having fitted irons to help me lower that cap.

    Hi Wendy,

When possible, I would always suggest visiting a Titleist Authorized Fitting Facility...which Golf Town is.  Some Titleist SureFit tools currently exist at 26 Golf Town's across Canada with more hopefully receiving them this spring.  Of course, that being said, our Titleist National Fitting Centre at Eagles Nest Golf Club offers the widest selection of shaft and spec options for you to test.

Additionally, at the Titleist National Fitting Centre, you would be able to see the actual ball flight, hit off real grass (weather permitting), measure launch conditions on Trackman and work with a Titleist Fitting Expert who fits Titleist Clubs each and every day...likely me! ; )

Each fitting session is 1 hour and will cost you $100.  In your case, there would most likely be time to check some of your other equipment (ie Driver, wedges, etc).

If this is not an option for you due to weather, timing or location, I would suggest going to any of our Titleist Authorized Fitting Partners (ex. Golftown).  They can check your length, lie, and launch conditions.  You can see a full list of Titleist Authorized Fitting Partners here http://www.titleist.ca/find-a-golf-shop/default.aspx .

    Thanks!

I have had the opportunity to work with Chris, and I must say, he knows his stuff!  It was a wonderful experience, and I left not only with the correct woods for me, but with a lot more knowledge.  Chris truly helped make a difference not only with my long game, but with my iron play in 2013. (I saw him in the fall of 2012)  He noticed a trend in my ball flight and we made a slight change to the lie angle, and it made a huge difference.  I had a great 2013 season with many low rounds and a lot of that can be credited to Chris and the impact that session had.  If anyone is looking to have their clubs dialed in, I would highly recommend a visit to the National Fitting Centre!

Chris, First off, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions! We really appreciate it!! I plan to work with an instructor this year (finally) to help make my game more consistent. Love the game so much that I have decided to put forth the effort so that I can enjoy more rounds rather than walk away saying "what was I doing, lol" Anyways, is it better to get fitted/adjusted to my clubs then meet with an instructor or take lessons to see if my swing path changes and so on then have my clubs tweaked? I did my fittings last season at GT when you guys held the Free fitting sessions. Thanks in advance Chris!

    Hi Tom,

This is a question that comes up often at the National Fitting Centre. We strongly believe that no matter what skill level or stage of development a golfer is currently in, properly fit equipment makes a difference.  The analogy I often use is “would you wear boots while going for a run?”  You could, but I’m sure your performance would suffer compared to running shoes!

In a perfect world, I would rather fit someone that is comfortable with their current swing.  This way I can evaluate the ball flight and make the necessary adjustment to their equipment.

If you plan on seeking some instruction, I would do that before club fitting.  Get comfortable with your swing and then find a local Titleist Authorized Fitter!

    Enjoy the process!

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hey Chris,

I am likely going with the AP2's with the steel fibre stiff shafts but I have a couple questions.  Yesterday at Northview I tried the new 714's with the Steel Fibre i110, and I was very impressed, they reduced my attack angle from a high of around -7 to -4.0, improved the spin numbers and felt nice and stable through the swing.  Most people would just order them, but I have a question on the i110 vs. the i95.  I know the guy's on tour play the i95, so I am thinking it is likely enough shaft for me, I am 49, I play around 70 rounds thru a 12 month season, and my 6 iron tends to run 88 to 92 mph (depending on whether I remembered the Advil).

My thoughts are based on the clubs on tour utilizing the Aerotech Steel Fibre i95, are only the bstone product.  Are you able tell me whether the 714 AP2's are different enough from the Brigestone that the i110 makes sense, or would the i95 be fine.

My current AP2's have DG S300 which feel fine, but I want the dampening of graphite, and the added bonus on the attack angle is a big plus.  As a final note, has anyone tried this shaft in the 712U 3 or 4 driving iron.

  17. Chris W

    Chris W
    Maple, ON

    Hi Frank,

Based on your description, I would go with the SteelFiber i100 for a few reasons:

-Being a DG S300 player, going from 130 to 95 grams is a big jump down in weight

-The i100 has been preferred by the majority of players I have fit versus the i95.

-Most important, you hit the i100 well!  Better AoA, spin, and feel.

I hope this makes your decision easier!

    Thanks for trusting Titleist!

  19. Hi Chris

I own the 714 Ap1 irons and purchased the gw1  at 48 degrees loft with the set. I am currently playing a 52 and 56 12 bounce wedges .I am getting more confident with my 56 around the greens  and am currently around a 15 handicap  but improving quickly.

My question, is a 56 loft  enough  to be the highest lofted club in my bag.My 52 is my 100 yard club but I am working on getting the ball flight down some and a bit more distance .My 56 is my 85 yard club and  starting to use it more around the greens instead of my 52  as I get better with the 56.

Is a 56 a high enough loft  club  or should I bend it to a 57 or go with a 58  and practice until I get good with the higher loft.?

By  titilest delofting the pw to 44 degrees it has thrown a wrench into my wedge configuration.

  20. Chris W

    Chris W
    Maple, ON

    Hi Murray,

A 56 degree wedge can be enough loft for some players.   It depends if you are comfortable inside 85 yards and can pitch it high around the greens.   If you feel like more loft can help in that area, then give a 60 degree wedge a try.

Our fitting research shows that it is extremely difficult for a player to dial back his/her wedge.  Most golfers would benefit from an extra wedge so they can hit full shots.

If you have room in the bag for another club, try a 58/60.  And remember, Bounce is your friend!

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

Quick question. I am getting new AP2's this year (4-9 iron) with C-Taper R+ flex. I am also ordering some Vokey SM4 46 and 50 degree wedges and TVD K 56 and 60 degree  wedges.  I want a little softer flex in the TVD's as I don't usually hit full shots with them.  Would it be a good idea to go with 8 iron shafts (soft step the R+'s) in those wedges, or go with the R flex?  I am thinking the R flex might be too soft  for full shots.

    Thanks

  22. Chris W

    Chris W
    Maple, ON

    Hi Ryan,

It’s always a good idea to go at least a ½ flex softer in you wedges.  This increases the feel for touch shots around the greens.  The C-Taper in any flex is a stable/firm shaft.  I wouldn’t worry about it being too soft for full shots.

    I would recommend the following:

    -SM4 46 and 50 C-Taper R+

    -TVD 56 and 60 C-Taper R

It sounds like a great set-up for lots of birdie chances!

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hello Chris,

I recently bought myself a set of 714 AP2s with XP95 shafts based on the results from my fitting in Detroit. It was a close call between those and the Project X shafts so I went with the cheaper option. I read somewhere that you should allow the lie of the club to dictate your posture (make it relatedly flat to the ground at address). According to my measurements, I should play standard length/lie clubs.

Therefore, I let the lie of the club  and length dictate my posture. I hit some bad, some good, so anyways, that is how I ordered them. Now I tend to want to bend over a little more since after taking videos of my swing i looked to stand fairly upright. My question is, should i go in and get my specs changed? Maybe a shorter club and flatter lie angles? When I set up how I would like to, the toe sticks up a fair amount.

Maybe this would confirm my doubts... I just received a TVD-K wedge 56*, that I had shortened .5" and the lie angle was made 1* flatter. I must say it is so much more natural and comfortable to set up with these specs. Can this mean that my irons may need some adjustments?

Thanks Chris and Happy New Year,

    Ovi

  24. Chris W

    Chris W
    Maple, ON

    Hi Ovi,

For length, it is essential to fit for a length that will allow for ideal posture and on-center impact.

After determining length, lie angle should be testing to achieve your preferred ball flight/shot shape.   Your lie angle should be pleasing to the eye at the address position. However, ball flight is the most important.  A lie angle that is too flat can cause right shots, too upright can cause left shots.

Before making any changes to your irons, I would see an Authorized Titleist Club Fitter.  You could try an 714 AP2  at -0.5” before cutting your current irons.

    I hope this helps!

    Chris...

The graphics that depict the ball strike position are priceless. I am going to have to find some tape and check out my clubs again. I was fitted two years ago for my irons, and it will be interesting to try out the impact tape to see if I am still striking it properly. I am not thinking that the clubs are the wrong length, but I may have changed my stance from when I was fitted. I know the clubs are right, and using the tape, I may find I need to stand a little more upright and stand a little closer to the ball.

    Question...

Is the impact tape available for purchase at most golf shops? I don't recall seeing it before, but to be honest I have not asked anyone before.

    Hi Darius,

I’m sure impact tape is available retail or online.

Another option is using a dry erase marker.  Basically, draw all over the face of any club and it will leave an imprint of impact location.

Hi Chris, I currently have the 710 AP1 with NS Pro 105T shaft R flex which was fitted through Titleist Regional Fitting Center. I am looking to update to the 714 AP2. I haven't had much success with the TT Dynamic Gold shafts and really liked the feel of the Nippon Shaft on the AP1. I am also thinking about experimenting with lighter weight shafts such as the Nippon NS Pro 950 or the KBS Tour 90 or KBS C Taper lite. I am wondering if any of the lighter shafts would have similar feel of the Titleist NS Pro 105T and whether these lighter shaft may launch the ball too high. I currently have a swing speed of approx. 88mph. Thanks
  30. Chris W

    Chris W
    Maple, ON

    Hi Frank,

I would test the following that are slightly lighter with similar feel to NS Pro 105T:

-XP 95  Player feedback has been very positive for this new option.  Most say that It doesn’t feel as light as stated, due to a lower balance point

-NS Pro 950/850 Similar feel in a lighter package

-SteelFiber 95/110  Light profiles that usually don’t launch too high

At the moment we don’t offer KBS tour 90 or C Taper Lite.  New updates to our shaft matrix will be coming soon.

    Thanks,

    Hi Chris,

I see the Tour Green shaft is now a stock option in the D and F clubs.  Can you also order the H or Hd with the Tour Green Hybrid shaft?  I have 105 mph driver club head speed with a quick tempo, so which flex would be better (stiff or tour stiff)?

    Hi Ryan,

The Tour Green 85 Hyb is now available as a stock option in Stiff and X-Stiff as a custom option.  This is a guideline of what flex to use based on speed:

Keep in mind, there is no industry standard on flex.  Not all stiff flex shafts are created equal.  The Tour Green plays a little stiffer to flex than most, so I would recommend trying one first if possible!

Fitting for a shaft can be very player dependent.   The end goal is to find a shaft that produces high ball speed, consistent shot pattern, and feels good.

I would try the following based on the information provided:

    -Bassara 50/55

    -Phenom 50/60

    -Blue +62

This sould be a good starting point for your new driver search.

Here are some differences between the TVD and SM5 K grinds:

    SM5 K grind

    -Available in 58, 60

-Bounce is 11 degrees for 58/60, with a slightly wider sole vs TVD K

    -TX3 grooves

    TVD K grind

    -Available in 56, 58, 60

-Bounce is 10 degrees for 58/60

-TVD Shape is a bit rounder with a shorter par height (heel height)

    -SM4 grooves (currently)

    Hi there,

I am contemplating making a shaft change to my 710 AP2s and I am looking for an opinion.  I currently play the stock DG S300s.  Last Summer, I decided to replace my Vokeys with 3 new SM4s that were shafted with Project X 7.0's (bent 2 degrees flat; fantastic eBay deal that I couldn't pass up).  I absolutely love the feel of the wedges and really hit them solid (carrying a 56 degree close to 110 yards).

My issue now is that I don't seem to strike the AP2s all that well anymore.  They are standard loft and lie and I feel like I balloon them (and they just don't feel anywhere near as solid as the Project X  wedges do).  After doing some preliminary research, I was thinking of going to Project X 6.0's in my AP2s.  Any thoughts?

I tend to swing a 5-iron between 90-95 miles per hour (5 iron carry around 180-185).  My miss tends to be a pull or a pull-hook.

    Thanks!

    Hi BStew,

In your case, Project X may just fit your swing profile better than DG.   So PX may feel better, but I’m not sure it will fix the spin issue.  If you do decide to re-shaft and there is still too much spin, I would suggest getting the lofts bent a little strong.   Loft will have a bigger influence on spin than most shaft changes.

    I hope this helps!

    Hi,

just had a fitting using Trackman for a set of AP2 714's, tried multiple shafts in the 6 iron (90 mph). DG  S300  launched at 25 degrees with 6000 rpm.  Project x 5.5 launched at 24 degrees with 5400 rpm. KBS C taper  (S) launched at 21-22 degrees with 4800 rpm. Carry distance was 180, 185, 190 in the same order. The C taper is lighter and feels so solid at impact. Can't wait to get them and the snow to go.

    Hi Whit,

In the spring there will be a complete list of Fitting Days posted for your area on Titleist.ca.  The local Titleist Sales Representative Mr. Chris Irwin and his Tech Fitting Rep Mr. Kyle Scott will have events all over Nova Scotia.  They will have multiple driver shaft options as well as a launch monitor for each event.  Chris and Kyle are both expert fitters, they will find the best driver for your game!

    Thanks for trusting Titleist!

    Hi,

just had a fitting using Trackman for a set of AP2 714's, tried multiple shafts in the 6 iron (90 mph).

Chris Considering a club fitting. I purchased a set of AP1's and was considering getting a fitting. How much is it for a set of irons and even a whole set of clubs and what is the process?

    Hi Steve,

Iron fitting consists of the following at the Titleist National Fitting Centre at Eagles Nest:

An evaluation of your current irons using Trackman.  This is used as a reference to see how your current irons perform.

-Testing of Length, Lie and Shaft with the appropriate iron model(s).

-Distance Gap testing for long and short irons to ensure the proper set configuration.

All fittings are performed off of turf (weather permitting) and using ProV1/X to ensure accurate results.

Pricing for an Iron/Short Game Fitting is $100 (plus taxes) for an hour. An authorized Titleist retailer can provide pricing for the irons.

For the Putter, we can recommend the proper model that suits you!  This can be included during an Iron/Short Game Fitting.

For availability or to book an appointment, please call Customer Service at 1877-928-8898

I hope to see you in the spring!

Hi Chris, Thanks again for all your help. I just got fitted through an authorized fitter and the XP 95 worked out beautifully on the 714 AP2 for me. So I am waiting 913 hybrids, fairway wood and 714 AP2 to come in. My only spot to fill is the wedge which I am waiting for the release of SM5 and I am wondering if I should have the wedge shaft match the XP 95 in my irons. Would you have any other suggestions? My swing speed is approximately 88mph. Thanks, Frank

    Hi Frank,

I would go with XP 95 in the wedge.  It is always a good idea to match iron and wedge shafts (consistant feel, etc).

XP 95 has been very popular in AP2 714!  I'm glad you enjoyed them.

    Thanks

    Chris

  55. Hello Mitch D and Chris W,

I suffer the same fate over here in Calgary with the snowfall and all. Sure makes for some nice anticipation.

I am looking to purchase new 3/5 woods this spring as I dont like to replace old faithfuls but they're getting tired. I purchased a 913D3 w/ a Motore Speeder Tour Spec VC 6.2X Stiff shaft and I absolutely love the thing - Bombs away and so buttery. Great fitting and excellent numbers.

I'm wondering as a Titleist fitter what you might recommend for a shaft in a 913F 15 and 19 degree wood that would give me some comparable boring trajectory....would you stay with the same company, similar identity just heavier? However with the 5 wood, I would want a higher ball flight for better controlled softer landings.

Would really appreciate any input you may have.

    Thanks,

    Millsy

    Hi Sean,

If you are having good success with the Spd VC 6.2 Tour Spec in the driver, the safe bet would be to stick with that shaft profile in your fairways.

    You could try:

    -15 913F w/ VC 7.2 Tour Spec

-19 913F w/ VC 8.2 Tour Spec (just added to our shaft matrix)

The 19 913F is usually pretty easy to launch high, most players are able to achieve a playable trajectory no matter what shaft.

    I hope this helps!

    Chris

  57. Perfect, That's pretty well what I figured, but wanted to double check with the guys inside the product line.

    Thanks!!

    HI Chris,

i game the 712 AP2 6-P and have KBS Tour 90 stiff shafts.  Im thinking of putting in a KBS shaft into my vokey's (gap-lob), should I go with the Wedge Flex Tour 90s in stiff or just the Tour shafts in stiff to keep consistency?

    Hi geneticstx,

Consistency is always a good idea for irons and wedge shafts.  Usually we recommended ½ flex softer in the wedges.  If you are happy with your iron shafts, a safe bet would be to go with KBS tour 90 (which was recently added to our shaft matrix).

    Thanks,

    Chris
