I am a member at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, GA. Should I be playing the Pro V1 for more spin on the hard greens or the Pro V1x for more distance?

Regardless of the course you play, the correct way to determine what ball is best for you is to take a few of each and start at the green and work backwards to the tee.  Key on how each ball reacts on chips and putts, then wedges, then mid/long irons, then lastly -  tee shots.

This is the proper way to determine which ball you should be playing.

Your club is an authorized Titleist rep. I'm assuming that East Lake has the technology to put you through a ball fitting? That's your best bet. Or, you could always grab a couple of each, the Pro V1 and Pro V1x. I've always played the Pro V1. When I test balls out for the Team, I do some pretty thorough testing. I chip, putt, hit flops, bump and runs; from various yardages, I'll play various shots with each club in the bag (draw, high fade, 3/4 shot, 1/2 shot...all kinds of stuff), bunker shots, even shots out of the shallow water (like Bill Haas!). Of course, I'll hit some drives, fairway woods, etc.. Heck, I'll even plug balls in the mud, or "cover them with sand, right against the lip, or behind a tree...just so I know what to expect; how that balls going to react with those shots.

Hopefully you can get set up with a ball fitting. If they can't do it, perhaps another authorized Titleist rep around the Atlanta area could help you out. Or, like was mentioned before, just do your own on course testing to see which one suits your game the best. Hope this helps. Best of luck to you.

What ball is the easiest to control all around the course? I have yet to find a ball that is the best from everywhere.

That varies from person to person. I use the Pro V1 because it works best for me in all conditions. However, some people prefer the Pro V1x, or even the NXT, Velocity...it all depends on what you're wanting your ball to do with the shots that you face. Of course, a ball fitting would be best for you.

You said that you haven't found a ball yet that works for you from everywhere. Which ball do you like? What doesn't work out for you? Are you long off the tee but can't get any spin going in to the greens?

As has been stated before, the best way to determine what ball is for you is to buy 3 packs of whatever ball(s) you are interested in and when the course is not busy go out and play and then judge from the green back to the tee. In other words, try putting and chipping (you can do this on the practice green), then pitching from various lies, then different irons and fairway woods, then the driver. The ball that feels and performs the best FOR YOU is the one you should be using.

Ball fitting might steer you in the right direction, but in my opinion, there is nothing better than on course trial and error.

    Dean,

I am sure that one of the club professionals that work at East Lake is a Titleist staff member and they should be able to walk you through a golf ball fitting at the club to help you decide which ball fits your game. I think that most of us ask this same question until we go through the process and figure out which one is the best fit for us.

Just yesterday at my club a lady came in the shop and asked which ball would help her make more birdies and pars. I suggested that she try the Titleist Velocity ball and she replied to me that she did not like Titleist golf balls.

My response was "then I guess you don't like making birdies and pars and they are not the #1 balls in golf for no reason."

Once she left my assistant and I laughed for a while about my comments.

Great response!  Ball is in her court or course!
