Golf Balls cold weather performance and Spin

    Background: I play in South Western Pennsylvania with a very early 7:30 AM tee time. During the Spring and Fall, conditions are most often wet with temperatures from 35 to 45 degrees. by the time we finish up if we are lucky the temperature has reached the mid 50's. Our Greens are Oakmont C.C. like; Lightning fast, yet receptive to a well struck mid or short iron. I have been using an NXT Tour ball this Spring shooting low 90's consistently. Today I switched to the Velocity and noticed a lower trajectory with my irons. The Velocity seemed to afford better forward run out and yet the ball still checked up nicely even with the lower ball flight with a full hard swing. My chips did not check up much at all as I expected. Am I CORRECT on my ASSUMPTIONS AS TO HOW THESE TWO BALLS DIFFER? Using my Walter Hagen blades with a 1" long standard steel shaft, my 7 iron flight carry is about 150 yards with either the NXT Tour or the Velocity. (I hit the ball very, very, high with all my irons). My 57 degree sand wedge flops easily and at best will fly 85 yards. BOTH BALLS SEEM TO BOUNCE FORWARD which I prefer and then check up! MY GUESS IS THAT the Velocity WILL NOT CHECK UP ENOUGH on a CONSISTIENT BASIS? IS it just Me or does THE PRO VI have so much side spin that, I get little or no forward roll, as the ball bounces once and spins sideways? NOTE: The PRO VIX I don't use as it's flight trajectory is just crazy high,( sounds like BS I know, but that's my experience)with my swing. Does this make sense?? Playing in cold weather I use a cally Tour Black or the NXT Tour. The Pro VI seems to give me about 20 yards more distance but only when the air temperature is 70 degrees or warmer. DOES THIS MAKE SENSE or is it just ME? There is very little difference in distance with my Irons when comparing these balls. Again could it be me? Thanks in advance, Jim Tex Pittsburgh PA

    What courses are you playing in the Pittsburgh area?  I used to play Butler's Creek and Lakeside all the time when I lived there, plus many others that the names are escaping me.  I went to Pitt, heck I even played that dog track at Schenley Park.

    Living in Atlanta now, I rarely have to worry too much about cold weather.  I play the Pro V1x mostly, as my game fits the more high trajectory, low-spin ball.  (Went through a Titleist ball fitting as well.)  However, in cold weather, and sometimes if I get on a ball-losing binge, I use NXT Tours.  The ball flight and spin is comparable in my opinion.  The thing I notice is that the NXT gives a little more run out on chips around the green.  Putter roll is about the same.  Pro V1xs sound a little different to me off the putter.  In cold weather, I haven't noticed much of a difference in distance, other than the standard loss of distance from the cold.

    The velocity is not made to offer a tremendous amount of short game spin so I wouldn't expect to stop all the time. From the sound of it, I'd say you probably don't strike the ball in a manner that would provide extreme spin - even from the ProV1 - but it would likely spin more than what you're currently playing. If I had to guess based on the way you describe you're ball flight, I'd say that you probably add loft to your shots and create very little spin - the ball bounces and stops simply because of the trajectory. I hit the ball high as well, and these are just some of the things that I've observed. I just picked up a bunch of ProV1's and have no concerns about too much spin based on the way I currently strike the ball.
