Looking for the right ball

  1. I'm looking for the right ball for me. I want as much distance as I can get but still with a little bit of feel around the green. Distance is definitely more important though. I'm a 12 handicap. I'm a big guy, 44 years old, 6'2" and 320 with a pretty decent swing speed, although I've not had it measured in years. I'm not looking to go pro, and I'm not terribly concerned with spin around the green although I would like at least SOME feel on the delicate shots. I've seen things online about the NXT (not NXT Tour), Tour Distance, and Velocity but apparently some of these are made exclusively for certain companies or not made at all anymore. Please help me figure out which ball is best for me.

The only ball is A Titleist! I recommend trying out the Pro V1 and Pro V1X. you will see benefits for your long and short game. Both offer great short game control and long distance off your longer clubs. The Pro V1 is a bit softer and will give you the feel you want and need around the greens. Give it a try and I am sure you will see a great performing ball.

Stephen, this is a good question and I do agree with Coolbreeze on several fronts. Yes, the ProV and ProVx are great golf balls that have outstanding distance and feel around the greens. As a 12 handicap (similar to me, BTW), it is certainly a ball that you can handle and achieve its' benefits. The NXT balls are also very good, although I haven't played them since they started with the "S" balls. so, my simply advice? two thoughts - (1) buy a sleeve or two of each and experiment bot around the greens and on the tees and/or (2) go to a shop like Golf Galaxy or Golfsmith and get a ball fitting performed (usually around $20). Echoing the comments from above, the best way to figure it out is to try them for yourself.  If cost is an issue, I highly recommend the NXT Tour balls.  I use them occasionally, particularly when I go on a ball losing binge.  Otherwise, I use the Pro V1x.

The other option with respect to a ball fitting, is to check here--http://www.titleist.com/events/  If you're lucky, there will be one in your area.  I went to one a couple of years ago, it was well worth it even if it weren't free.  As you can imagine, the Titleist staff were fantastic, discussed my game, took extra time with me, and after looking at the numbers on the trackman confirmed that the Pro V1x was the best ball for me.

Full disclosure, I'm about a 20 handicap.  Pro V1 and Pro V1x aren't just for low handicappers.  We can all benefit from them.

Yes, try different balls and if possible get fit.  I use the ProV1x as my primary ball, but also have really liked the NXT Tour S ball.  If you are not wild of the tee and losing balls left and right then the ProV1 or ProV1x might be an excellent option.  The best way in my opinion to get to a single digit HC from your 12 will be short game control and the V1 and V1x have that.  However the NXT is a lower cost.  You mentioned distance as your main wish.... that might be more a swing fix, center of face contact cures lots of distance loss. Good luck, work on contact and short game and watch your scores drop. Let us know what titleist ball you decide upon.

Going to your local Titleist fitter would be best. I've tried just about all the balls out there and always keep coming back to Pro V1x. (I just try them to see what's new most of the time).

Considering the fact that your main want is distance, I'd recomend the ProV1X. It will give you the most distance possible as well as amazing greenside spin. I'd also recomend buying a sleeve of a couple different types and see which one feels the best if you are unsure.

I have been to ball fitters for other brands and was recommended to use that brand.  I tried them but went back to the Pro V1x. I have a 12 handicap and am 75 years old.  I know use the Pro V1 Instead of the Pro V1x because I get less height with the Pro V1 and a little more run on the fairway.  Either ball is great,  I have tried the DT Solo, NXT, NXT Tour and the Velocity.  I get more distance off the tee with the Pro V1's.

It sounds like the NXT Tour is the perfect ball for you.  It is geared more for distance, but still has a good feel around the greens.  The Velocity is more of a pure distance ball, with a very firm feel and very little spin.  Try a sleeve of the NXT Tour first.

If you find the feel a little too 'firm', switch to the NXT Tour S, which will give you a little better feel around the greens, and more spin on half wedge shots and chips.

I think that the Pro V1x covers it all. It definitely gives you more distance off the tee, but still allowing you to hav great control around the greens. But that's my personal opinion. Try everything, and if you find something that works, stick with it.

The ProV1X is the best all around ball I've found and I've played virtually every quality ball available, without naming them obviously. I'm told it's a little harder than the ProV1 but I can't feel it. My swing speed is still in the mid-90's at 65 years and I play around a 2. I prefer a ball that "goes" and stops...the 1X does both, feels good on short soft shots, spins well on semi-flops to short sided pins and it has good distance. If price is a concern try the practice or x-out balls first. At our level it's all but impossible to tell much, if any, difference between them in my opinion.

I presently play the Pro V 1 , but I tested the new Trusoft ball and absolutely love it. When I use out all my Pro V's I will make the switch. You should give them a try also. My H.C is 14.  Hit um straight , Dave...

I use the ProV1X. Like the feel off the club, and especially the "click" off the putter when you "tap" it just right.
