I bought the 910D2 driver at the end of last summer. Absolutely fell in love with it. I never considered Titleist clubs as I thought they were more for the scratch players. I am a 10 handicap and am currently playing TM rac LT irons with TT steel regular shafts. Advancing in years so iron distance has dropped about one club - PW is about 115, 8 iron is 130-135... I really like the traditional look with a thin top line. Where would you suggest that I start  in Titleist irons?

My PW distance is about 105-115 and I am 56.   I play AP1s but am able to hit forged irons.  Try the CBs if you want to stick with player irons.

I play what could be considered a rather unusual bag (what the kids scoffed as an "old geezer" bag).   13* TM draw driver (shortened to 44.5" with Winn Lite Dri Tac grip), 910F 19* (A3 setting and shaft 41" with Dri Tac grip), Steelhead III 9 wood, 910H 27* (A3), DIY 31* hybrid with R300 steel shaft (missed a hole in one by 3 ft on the inaugural round), AP1 7-PW (31-36-41-46), SM4 wedges (54-11, 60-10 and 64-07, the 54 and 60 are 1* strong loft) and 7H putter.  I carry a 12 handicap but am slowly dropping since I'm nailing the distances on the wedges and biggest improvement was tossing the 21H and going back to using a 9 wood after 3 years.

Jim; Just my 2 pennies, but on the munnie course that I mostly play (it's a par 70) I'll usually shoot 82-85 (shot an 85 today, but had a bad front 9, and shot 4 over on the back) and I also have the 910D2 10.5* w/ A flex shaft, and i have the AP1 irons, and they work really well for me. I think the AP1's would be great for you, but as always, find a good Titleist fitter, and he/she can let you hit different clubs and shafts, until they find just what irons will be best for you. That's the best way to find out. What works for one person may or may not work for you. One thing I can tell you for sure, Stay with Titleist, and you'll never be sorry. I've had every brand of clubs you can think of, but never had Titleist until now, and I can tell you, I'll never go back to any of the others. Once you have Titleist clubs, you'll never go back either. Find a good Titleist fitter, and they'll find the right clubs for you.

    Jim,

Great advice so far.  I echo the statement on getting fitted to see what works best for you.  Do a complete bag fitting if possible and they can help get your yardage gaps under control and maybe set your lofts where you get maximum distance..  At a 10 hndcp I would think you could swing the AP2's with no issues.

Great input from all of you! I really appreciate the thoughts. I guess the AP1/AP2 issue can best be decided with a fitting. Unfortunately, if I am not swinging well on that day (a few lower back and neck disc issues) it is hard to get a good feel. I love the "old man's bag" of clubs but am so impressed with the Titleist driver that I am planning on gradually switching everything over. Again, thanks for the help.

I have AP2's and recently hurt my lower back before i went out of town for a golf trip. I decided to golf anyways which was a pretty big mistake. Even with a hurt back and not very good swings i had pretty decent shots, they didn't go nearly far as normal but they stayed true.

    Sean,

I feel your pain brother. I paid for a Scottish golf trip and had to withdraw with no refund because of the lower back. Hard not to hit pull hooks. Good to know that you could still make them go in the right direction. Thanks for the input!

    Hi Jim

I also play and LOVE my 910 D2.  I just bought a set of AP2 712s.   Great irons.  Demo the iron selections and good luck.

Jim - I thought I would jump on the proverbial 910D2 band wagon and concur with you my friend.  As of a month ago I was playing a TM R11 Driver at 8.5. After using for several months of using I simply could not get used to the aesthetics of it upon address, nor could I stomach the sound upon impact.  Not to mention, the feel of the club was all off.  In any event, I used to play quite seriously when from about the age of 6 all the way through my early twenties (I'm now 39) and I had custom fit Titleist irons.  I say that to say that I've always played Titleist and trusted their work so I bought a 910D2 7.5 degrees and put it on an Oban Kiyoshi Purple 85 X my neighbor gave me and I'm insanely in love with it.  I crush the 910D2. Absolutely love it.  Love the feel, love the trajectory, the look and the sound.  Anyway, just thought I'd agree with you in regards to the driver.

As of what irons to use, I play still with TM R9 (Again, my neighbor who used to work for TM out in Carlsbad gave me a set for free).  I'd love a set of the AP2's.  But being a father of 2 boys and one on the way....well, I'm stuck with the R9's.  I hope you're able to procure a set of Titleist irons.  And when you do be sure to let me know what you got and how you'r hittin' 'em!

    Sincerly - Andy

    Andy,

First, Congrats on the new little golfer on the way. It doesn't get any easier. At my age, just put over $3k in a tooth implant which could have given me a complete set, plus bag, plus gloves, plus............struggled with the priorities but finally settled on a tooth that I use every day instead of clubs that I use when it is nice outside. Love the look of the irons. I was sent a TM 6 iron several years ago as an introductory trial club. My rac LT's feel solid and give good feed back. The new clubs seem to have spent so much effort on reducing vibration that they have eliminated feel. I am anxious to see how the AP's feel. Talked to a guy at the course the other day who said he thought the new 913 was hotter than the 910....hard to believe - but - went out and shot 9 over with 4 double bogeys so I think that irons are more important than a few more yards off of the tee. You guys keep working so I keep getting my social security. Maybe I can put enough away that I can get my dream set. Thanks for your input, Andy, and good luck.

I play 3-5 times a week and absolutely loved the sound and look of the AP2s not to mention the playability. To each his own i suppose.

You say you like a thinner top line. I am the same way. Can't stand the horsey look of thick top lines. I am a 10 hdcp. I got fitted with AP2s when the 712 first came out. I was worried I couldn't hit them well enough, but as it turns out, I hit them very well. Better than my 755s which I had for three years before. The AP2 712s are sweet feeling clubs. I play 100xs a season or more. Best iron I have ever hit. If and when the new 714s come out, I don't think I will buy them. Another two years with these will be just fine. I have hit the AP1s, but frankly, I do not like the way they look at address. Worse than most cally irons. I will admit, I have hit an AP1 5 & 6 iron surprisingly well off the tee, but I have mental issues looking at that big fat club head when hitting off a tight lie. No problem with the AP2 though. I thought I might try the AP1 5 & 6 iron for a little more forgiveness in those longer irons, but have gone back to the AP2s. I feel much better standing over the ball with them. They have forced me to be a better player. I have learned to hit the ball with more center contact. And man, that feeling is so sweet.

    Hey Doug

When I first looked at my AP2 712s I thought the same thing.  After one round I was impressed with their performance.   I was playing 695MBs before.   Always a blade player.   AP2s are sweet!!!   Still have the 695MB 2 iron in the bag.  Too old school for hybrids also.

Jim - don't know if you have pulled the trigger yet but ...

Don't let emotions or ego get in the way, I didn't. I had always been a blade man - went to get fitted, ended up with AP1's with the new PXI shafts - best decision ever. I sometimes go to the local store an flit with the CB's,AP2's, cally X Forge, etc.. taking the 6 irons to the range for comparison, but always come back to the AP1. So go get fitted - they will provide the best club fit for your swing.

I had some 755 irons that I was going to attempt to use in a mixed set (freebies anyway) with AP1s.   Although they weren't hard to hit and  felt good, I had a 20 yard gap between the AP1 8 iron and the 755 9 iron (and I set the lofts of the 9 and PW within a degree of the AP1s).  Sorry, folks, love the AP1 distance.

In regards to ego - seniors have it right! The important thing is getting the ball in the hole with the fewest strokes.  HOW you get it there is irrelevant.  The 31H has been deadly between 140-150 since I constructed it.  Today I did a choke down shot from 135 and stuck the green on the last hole (got lazy and didn't feel like hitting an 8 iron).  I also stuck a par 3 with the 9 wood today.   Last time out I shot 39 (Adm Baker South front 9 par 37) and today 40 at Riverwalk Friars (par 36 same length but shorter par 3s and one less par 5 and much longer par 4s).
