Can someone tell me the difference between AP1 and AP2 as far as spin goes. Do the AP1 spin it more?

I know if you get the player friendly irons in most brands like TM the new rocketbladez spin the hell out of the ball so the average player can get them high. I tried a set and spun it so much into the wind lost a club and with the wind hit it forever.

I been playing the srxn blades for years but am over 60 now and thought I would try the AP1 but don't want a club that acts like the rocketbladez. I am still a 1 handicap and like to work the ball low into the wind and was wondering if anyone had a problem doing that with the AP1 or do I need to go to the AP2

    Thanks

I've been using AP1 7-PW since last year.   The shafts I have are DG R300 HL but I haven't noticed a super high trajectory and they do have some roll.  I put them alongside some 755 forged irons recently (755s were 6-8-9-PW with lofts set to 31-37-42-47 and AP1s were 31-36-41-46); the 755 6 iron and AP1 7 iron had the same distance, the 755 8 and 9 irons were 10 yards shorter and the 755 PW was 5 yards shorter.   I played a round of golf with the AP1 7 and 8 irons and the 755 9 and  PW - there was a 20 yard gap between the AP1 8 iron and the 755 9 iron.

Best thing to do is start by hitting the AP1 and AP2 side by side (keeping in mind the 2* loft difference).  If you're a 1 handicap, AP2s might be the way to go.

I think the AP1 is a great set of irons and i don't think they spin too much at all.  The biggest difference between the AP1 and AP2 from my fitting was the offset and stronger lofts.  The clubs performed about the same other than a little shorter due to the lofts

The easy answer is to go get fitted by a proffesional club fitter and see what works best for you.

Having said that, spin is really going to come down to the shaft. I'm a 2-3 handicap and a strong player (hit my 7i 185 yards) and prefer the AP1 heads. I do have shafts in them that intentionlaly keep the spin down (KBS C-taper S+) and the lofts are 1* weaker than standard.

I have had no problem keeping the ball low with this set-up. IMO that comes down to technqie, not the clubs. I prefer the AP1s over the AP2s because I never have the chance to practice, only to play, and I can use the extra forgivness that the AP1s offer.

They are both great sets of clubs. Go hit them and get fit to see what works best for you.

Also, the AP1s are cast and the AP2s are forged.  The biggest difference for me is the offset.  ...I need(ed) it.  You may like the feel of an AP2 better coming from blades.  Some of the Titleist pros have used AP1s for the 3/4/5 irons.  Naturally you have to watch the loft, the AP2/CB/MB have more tradtitional lofts (higher) than the distance wars champions.

I found a little non-scientific study on the spin of AP1 irons vs. AP2 irons on a website that showed the AP1 irons. They used 10 golfers with single digit handicaps and had them hit 5 balls with a 6 iron. The 712 AP1 spun 5900rpms, and the AP2 spun 6200rmps. The 710 series for both AP1 and AP2 spun 200rpms more than the 712 series.

I have a set of AP1 irons (4-9) and Vokey SM4 wedges (46*, 52* and 60*). I have a groove sharpener and sharpened my 8 and 9 irons. Before, I'd get a little spin with them, but sometimes the ball wouldn't sit too well.  After doing the grooves, the ball really sits nicely on the greens. I am a member on a course with extremely small greens which makes you have to sit it softly on the green or run it up there. Going for the pin can be disastrous. Overall, I am happy with the spin on my AP1 irons. I'm not a huge fan of tremendous spin, but I like for the ball to sit (not spin back) when it lands on the green.

I agree Keano26. Hitting past the pin, and spinning the ball back is fine for the pro's, but for a hacker like me, if I try to spin the ball I never know how much it will spin, or if it will spin at all. I'd much rather bring the ball in high, and, soft, and let it drop with no spin at all.
