  1. Has anyone hit these side by side?  I'm looking to replace my 19 & 22.5H with 21 & 24u.  Was hoping to get similar distance out of both.

Thanks for any and all input.

John - I bought the 712u 3 iron instead of a 913H after my recent fitting.  I hit the 712u 3 more consistently (carry about 215 yds) and I am already practicing on working the ball flight with it.  However, I am a bit biased because I've never hit hybrids that well.  Hope this helps a bit.

That does help quite a bit actually.  Since 215-220 is right around my 19h, the 3u would replace that.

Mind me asking how far you hit your 5 iron and what loft it is?  I know everyone is different and such, but it gives me a rough idea.

Here are my current distances, I'm hoping these Utilities can fit right in seamlessly.

    5i (26*) - 190

    4h (22.5*) - 200-205

    3h (19*) - 215-220

    3w (16*) - 235+

    Thanks Thomas.

John - Sorry for the delay in responding.  All my clubs are 712 AP2 with KBS reg flex shafts except for the 712u 3 (also with KBS reg flex).  My carry distances are:

    Driver - 265

    5w - 240

    3u - 215

    4 - 210

    5 - 200

    6 - 190

All the normal caveats apply; good lie, good stroke and the wind/roll out not applied.  My home course is fairly flat with thin bermuda fairways that give a lot of roll-out as well.  I hit my 3u 240yds on Saturday because of the penetrting ball flight and good roll out.

I ordered PW-5i in the 712mb's so the 4i(h) and 3i(h) are still up for debate.  Unfortunately the store only had up to the 5 iron in the MB's (in lefties) to demo.  So I didn't want to pull the trigger on a 3 &4 without hitting them.  My current irons are blades, this will be my first new set in 10 years.  The 712's felt like a much more forgiving blade, but I haven't hit a 3&4 iron in 6 years.

I did hit the 3 and 4 in the AP2's though and wow.  Those are easy long irons to hit.  Trajectory was around my current 5 & 6 iron, which is great.  Could never get my long irons in the air.

Also hit the 712u 4, which surprisingly I didn't like as much as the AP2 4. I did hit it pretty well though.

Unfortunately I couldn't get on a monitor to compare distance for distance.  However just based on feel, the AP2 3&4 seem like winners.

  6. Hello Thomas,

Liked reading your info there. I'm curious what you use off the tee box when not a driver? And what driver are you using? 913 or 915 d3 or d2?

    Thanks,

    Scott

I hit the 712u, and ordered both in 3 and 2 iron (still waiting though, I guess they're pretty popular or in short supply).  I took the hybrids out of the bag and went back to the long irons.  As great as the hybrids are getting out of the rough easier, I don't feel they can get you out of trouble as well as the irons, as you can't keep them as low when you need to and work them left or right as well when you need to.  I have found most hybrids go further than the same iron, but in testing the 712u's I found them to be a little further than a regular 2 or 3 iron and closer to the hybrid distance, within a few yards

Great info and I appreciate it very much.

That is what I was kinda thinking, the 712u probably hits around hybrid distance.  Then the regular irons going 5 or 10 shorter than those.

Guess I really need to just get on a monitor with all the clubs.  I've hit most outside and know which feel the best to me, but numbers always help.
