Team here s dilemma, I haven't been a big driver user the last couple of years. ( I hit my 3wd. 265yds ) anyway. Lately ive been hittingmy driver very well (290 -300) but II've been choking up on the handle about 1 1/2 inches. So my question is should I continue to choke up or should I have the shaft cut????? Will that change the tip point on the shaft?

Cutting it 1.5" will reduce the swingweight 9 points if the stock grip is retained.  Changing from the standard Golf Pride Tour Velvet to a Golf Pride 25 will restore 6 of 0those points. Then add 6 grams to the head to bring it back 3 more points. I have a TM Burner that is shortened to 44.5" and I have a Winn Lite Dri Tac oversize grip on it. I also have an R580 7 wood that comes in at D6 with Golf Pride 25. My 910F 19* is 1/4" short but is about 1 point heavier vs stock because of an Excel RF mid size.

Continuing..... the most I would shorten any club is an inch. Theoretically shortening doesn't stiffen the flex but it does. Personal experience with tweaking clubs.

Just my way of thinking, but I'd keep the same shaft length, and continue to choke down on it since that seems to be working for you. The extra length will always be there if you need it. In the mean time, try choking down only 1" until you can hit it as well as choking down 1 1/2" and then choke down 1/2 and so on. Maybe with a little practice doing this you may get to where you won't need to choke down at all, and add 20 yards or so to your drive. Once you cut 11/2" off your shaft it's gone.

Thanks thats a good idea ,I ve marked the grip with tape so now I will start sliding my hands up the shaft til like you said maybe I can get a few more yards.. Also with choking up , my drives are a lot lower than normal. Is that common??? Thanx team

I think this incremental steps of moving your grip toward the end of the shaft will work for you. Just remember not to try it in too big a steps. !/2" or so at a time, and be sure that you're hitting the ball well, and are comfortable with the new length before you move on to the next step. Good Luck, and I hope this works for you. You should defiantly be able to get more distance with the longer shaft. Just don't get in too big of a hurry. Just a little at a time will do it.

mad golfer; it could be that your ball flight is lower because you're not used to the longer shaft yet. Give it a little time to get better.  (unless it's so low that it's causing problems) If it doesn't get better, you could try to "T" the ball a little higher, or "T' it up a little more forward, but be sure not to "T" it up so far forward that it starts to slice. I have to be careful of that myself, because if I "T" it too far forward, I'll slice it every time. Good Luck.

Always better to be too long than too short.  But if you are just about choking all the way down the handle and have the correct posture then it is way too long.

45" is a good length for a driver.  46" is just way too long.  For that matter, 43" for a 4 wood is also way too long.

The other issue with shortening the shaft is you have to restore swingweight by using a lighter grip or adding more weight to the head.
