Ms-209 Steel Shafts

    Hello All. I'm looking for technical specs on the old MS-209 shafts (weight, bend profile, etc. in all flexes) and a recommendation for its closest replacement. Thanks.

    Did you ever find these specs?  I have been playing the DCI gold with the MS209 stiff, and I'm thinking of switching to the new AP2 714 and want to find a similar shaft.   Any suggestions?

    Hello.

    No, I haven't. Sorry. The Titleist Concierge told me to contact True Temper, and their C.S. is about as responsive as Mumbai Motors. However, a couple of the real old time club builders in my area both said the MS-209 had a weight and bend profile similar to Dynamic Gold Lite. 

    I know what it means to be in love with a legacy shaft. The best shaft I ever played was the Tri Spec with the hickory dowel in a set of 681s. 

    Suggestions? Well, if you're really attached to the MS-209's you already have, and they have no rust or dings, you could  pull them from the DCI Gold's and install them in the AP2. Its quite common for folks pull their stock shafts and sell them on eBay. And you could sell your DCI Gold heads there too. But keep in mind, you'll be asking a shaft that was engineered for a very different head to produce the same results. If it were me, I'd hold onto the DCI's as a backup set. You'll regret parting with them. I know I miss the 962's l let get away for cheap.

    Now, as you might have guessed, I have as set with MS-209's, and they happen to be DCI GOLD's. I keep them as a "loaner" set for out-of- town guests that I bring to the club, so I've never played them regularly. But going by feel alone, I'd say they have a Dynalite Gold type response to them, but not quite as high. That is, the original Dynalite Gold, not the XP designated ones (which happens to be what I play now and I'm very happy with them). I've never played Dynamic Gold Lite's, so I've never tested the opinions I've been given.

    With all that said, one option is the  trial-and-error method. If you go that route, I'd start with the Dynalite Gold XP shafts. A much better approach would be to get fitted at someplace that uses a TrackMan, FlightScope, or similar technology. GolfTec and Golf Galaxy are a couple such places. Golf Galaxy would probably have you swing the miz Shaft Optimizer in combination with a launch monitor, giving you two bases of analysis.

    Hope this gives you some fodder for thought. Sorry, I couldn't offer a more definitive response.

    I really appreciate your response.  Obviously, I love my DCIs as I've been playing them over 20 years. LOVE my 1 and 2 irons, the dinosaurs that they are.  Finally considering a move from my DCIs is a big move, but I'm guessing that there has been a bit of technological advancement in that time.  We'll see.

    JCL,

    I was wondering if the AP2's were your first change in equipment since first playing your DCI's. So one thing to consider is that maybe you like your MS-209's so much because your swing has adapted to them. Head designers like Tom Wishon and Ralph Maltby hold that view. What that may mean is that the MS-209's are not best suited for your swing, but that over 20 years you've developed a swing to suit the MS-209's, but not necessarily your best swing. If that's the case, you may find a more suitable shaft than the MS-209's or what came stock in your AP2's. And given that your body is 20 years older, and now have developed the skill level to make a move from the first iteration of DCI's to the current version of AP2's, then I'd imagine you should investigate the current options from all  the shaft manufacturers. And as I suggested, the most efficient and economical way to do that is to be fitted by a PGA professional who is proficient using a launch monitor. Now it may take a couple sessions as your swing will get tired during the course hitting dozens of balls.

    BTW, speaking of shafts and Tom Wishon, a couple years ago he posted an interesting online article on Golf WRX about 10 golf shaft myths. I don't take everything Wishon says as gospel, but I have yet to see him proven wrong, so it's worth reading. At the very least, you'll approach the process without unrealistic expectations striking gold (no pun intended).

    Hit 'em straight, unless you're aimin' not to.
