How often do you check lie and loft?

I have a new set of 714 AP2's and love them. Had to make a small lie/loft adjustment already. The club fitter noticed that the new clubs seem to be softer metal and had to be careful making the adjustment. I am wondering if this will affect the clubs over time and day to day usage. How often is it recommended to have lie and loft checked on your irons? I play 70+ rounds per year and spend a lot of time on the practice tee.

    Please share your experiences.

Modern irons, even when forged, are rarely as "butter soft" as they were in the 80s and 90s. They generally stay within specs even with lots of play and practice. It takes a hard shock to alter them. This said, have three or so clubs checked next month and three different the following for peace of mind. If the specifications are where they should be, given as much as you play, have the set checked twice a year.

Hi Joel,  As long as you own your custom ordered set of irons, we will bend them to your specs each year at no cost.  You do have to pay for shipping and set it up through your custom fitting account. It will take about 2-4 days in house and shipping time so when you have a week to ten days during your offseason, have your shop set it up and we will check and bend them to spec.

I don't really ever get my clubs checked, but I think it should be checked at least every year.  And if Titleist is offering this for free, I think you should take advantage of it.

This is a question I would like to hear the answer to as well. For those of us who didn't do the custom order set but still have forged irons, how often should you check loft/lie. Scary to think it's been 2 years since my Ap2 purchase that variables in my iron heads could have changed and I would have never even thought of it. Do you recommend once a year? Twice a year? I also play upwards of 70 - 100 rounds a season

Cathi- I recently had my lie angles checked (after not doing so for two years) and everything was very off. I was curious if there was anything I could learn from a fitting perspective. For example, my Pitching Wedge was 1* stronger than what it should have been, however my short and mid irons were approximately 3 * flatter. My long irons were only 1* weaker. While I have always been fit by titleist fitters on a lie board, could the extreme bending of the irons from use give an indication that maybe my irons should be a bit flatter?

Check em every year Joel. Especially with softer forged irons. If you play a lot they will definitely bend unless you play in very soft conditions. I had mine checked a few years ago and I play over 100 rounds a year, a few of the irons were a full degree bent in loft and lie angle.

If you play that often, I would do it every 30/35 rounds, if not sooner with your practice sessions. especially if it is on a mat, and not grass.

    Cheers,

    Paul

  11. I check my clubs about twice a season just to ensure they stay in spec...every once in a while after many range sessions one might come out of spec slightly...

Chris - Do you check your clubs yourself?  If so, what do you use?

I play the 710 MB and previosly 695 MBs. I have found each winter when I take them in to check that my PW and 9 iron is usually off by a degree or so and my lob wedge can drift from 60 up to 61 or 62. The lower lofted clubs usually stay right where they are.

Playing a lot you may not notice on the course but those are important clubs and think its very wise to check to higher lofted irons and wedges each year.

Cost maybe $3-5 per club to adjust, but can make that off your buddies in a nassau with more accurate clubs!

Merry Christmas and Happy holidays TT.

My son and I both play over 100 times a year and practice most every day. I have a Mitchell Loft and lie machine and I check and adjust loft and lie all the time. Many clubs are not correct especially if you buy them at the golf store. Also many people find that as they work on swing mechanics such as angle of attack and swing plane they may need to adjust the lie angle. Some people notably older pros would set up their sets with more upright lie angles in the longer irons and flatter in the short irons and wedges. Also manufactures differ on what is standard on both loft and lie. Remember changing loft also affects the bounce of the iron, depending on the type of grass you play on this is important as well. Find someone local who will do it while you wait should only be a couple of bucks per club.

I have had a set of AP1's for a year and have never had them checked...
