  1. Yep, I'm still hitting the oh.....15 year old or so DCI triangle blacks.  Standard everything with dynamic gold stiff shaft.  I'm 6 feet tall and around a 7-8 handicap, carry distance for 8 iron-150, 7 iron-160, 5 iron-180.  Medium ball flight either straight or with slight draw.

Anyway, I've finally decided to upgrade.  But the specs of the AP2s don't look a whole lot different from my old DCIs.  So my question to the experts is how much of a difference would I see in terms of distance and forgiveness?  Thanks.

They are MUCH more forgiving! Before you order naything, please find a Titleist fitter and get the clubs made to a set of specs that you and your fitter come up with. You should be able to get them made so that your yardages remain as they are today. Who knows, you might find a different shaft that makes your ball flight more consistant.

I just switched from the old DCIs to 714 AP2s. Our stats are very similar and I picked up about a half a club in distance. The feel is significantly better and missed shots don't seem to lose as much distance. I switched to PXi 6.0s from the S300s, like the lighter shaft at age 52. I am taking a shallower divot than before and the turf contact is cleaner than with the older clubs. I picked up 12 yards with the 6 iron during my club fitting.

I highly recommend switching, find yourself a good fitter and try them out.

CC B, thanks for asking. Like you, I am still playing the DCI blacks also. Best irons that I have hit to date. Can't wait to see what the answer is going to be here.

I can't speak to your specifics, but I just recently switched from 15 year old irons to new technology and I saw an immediate change.  I instantly became 2 clubs longer but with the same trajectory and more spin on my short irons.  So now I can attack pins from about 20 yards further out than I previously could.  I'm also more consistent with my "misses" being much less severe.  I use to think I didn't need new clubs and it was me more than the clubs.  But now I see that technology changed so much over the years, that my old clubs were holding me back.

I switched from the DCI blacks to the original AP1's 4 years ago.  (I am 6'6" ,  9 hdcp,  play 1" long 4* up.  Distances are comparable to yours) I thought the DCI's were great (still do) until the pro at my club let me demo a set for a week.  Looks are somewhat comparable at  setup. No noticeable changes in distance.  But what prompted me to switch was that they felt like forged and made a difference in mishits and my shot dispersion.   A NOTICEABLE difference in accuracy.  The DCI's were great in these categories but the AP's sold me on their added feel and forgiveness.

I  actually liked the look of the  AP2's a bit more but didn't see enough of a benefit to justify the extra cost.

    Have you tried them yet?

  7. Well, I've been trying the 712 AP2s, stiff shafts S300, now for about 3 months.  Here are my thoughts...and all compared to my original 20 year old DCI blacks.

    1.  Never have seen a more beautiful club....from any angle!  But set down behind the ball, it looks like you can't hit a bad shot.  It sits perfectly behind the ball.

    2.  Workability was good for me, but then again, I don't try to put big curves on my shots anyway.

    3.  Distance was better than my old blacks, but these clubs are about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long with a degree or two stronger lofts.

    4.  Feel was nice, but honestly, after playing my old clubs for so long (and they are pure cavity back, cast), I just couldn't get use to the feel of these clubs.  It has everything you should want like good feedback, etc., but I just couldn't get used to it, especially on slight mis-hits.  I felt this while trying them, but thought I would get use to it.

    5.  Swing.  Here's where the rubber meets the road.  I just couldn't get used to the feel of this club in the swing itself.  The swing weight is D2 (my DCIs are D1), yet they felt much light to me.  It also felt like I was swinging one solid piece of metal (I know that doesn't make much sense)...sort of like I couldn't feel the clubhead.  As a result, I had a tendency to come off the ball slightly and usually was hitting it 1 two 2 grooves low on the club.  Again, I had hoped I would get used to this new feel, but it doesn't seem to be coming around.

I then tried the AP1s, and those "feel" much more like my old DCIs.  I guess since it's cast and a bit more of the GI type design like the DCI's, I shouldn't have been surprised.  I'll be exchanging the AP2s for the AP1s and see how that goes.

I should say I've been using them for the last two months.  The AP1s are very nice as well.  It does come with the lighter xp95 shafts.  Slightly larger than the old DCIs.  I notice they are basically one club length difference in shaft length and loft.  IOW, the PW is my old 9-iron, the 9-iron is my old 8 iron, etc.
