I purchased a new set of custom AP2 714 irons and after about a dozen rounds the paint on the numbers is coming off.  Is there an easy way to fix this?

Hi Patrick,  I am sorry to hear about the numbers.  When you have one week to spare without your irons, take them to your pro and have him set up a Warranty repair.  Ask him to get an expedited shipping label and priority on the repair and they will bring it in and repaint it for you.

is this a known problem? I am in the market for AP2 and have noticed that every demo set i have used in the big stores, the numbers are chipping. I would hate to have this happen.

    Cathi,

I am  seeing a similar issue with my AP2 714's.  The 9 iron paint has almost entirely come off.  I did not notice if any of the others were starting to strip.

Our season is getting into full swing right now and it will be hard to part with the sticks for long.

Paint fills coming out is common issue with almost irons over time.  I would suggest refilling them yourself with a small amount of oil based paint.  I've done this to my irons a number of times and recently redid all of the new AP2's.  Simply fill int he number, don't worry about overfilling, and let dry overnight.  Then, with a lint free cloth with a little acetone or nail polish removed, lightly wipe off the excess.  Warning, this becomes addictive and causes the desire to customize all of your irons.  Below is how mine turned out.  Hope this helps!

Andrew A, looks nice!!! I may have to give it a try.

I have 714 ap2s and my paints are coming off too especially on the higher loft ones like 9 and pw. Doesn't really bother me though.these are still the best looking, best performing irons out in the market right now.

May be titleist will keep this in mind for 716s?

This is a very common problem.  I had a set of 735 CM that almost every club lost the paint out of the number.  I have a set of AP2 712 that it is also beginning to come out of.  I use a fine tipped "Painters Pen" to fill them back in.  It is just paint in a pen that you can find anywhere that sells paints and crafts.  Easy fix, but even that doesn't last.  I wouldn't consider this a major flaw, but I do expect to see this same question in a couple years when the 716's are out.

No complaints on the clubs other than they are not 6 months in use and the paint is coming off.  That could potentially lead to an issue if this is an occurrence  on a large percentage of the clubs.  Would not like to see these clubs with a bag image.

I love my 714 AP2s, but agree with the comments here.  I've probably played 10 or 15 rounds with the irons and the paint is coming out of the numbers.  Not a big enough deal for me to send them back for re-painting.  Other than the paint issue, the clubs are really nice.  The feel is great and the look at address is beautiful.  Great sticks.

Wow what an awesome idea! I like the ingenuity and it looks like it turned out very well. I recently bought my AP2's, though they are 712's and should I have this paint chipping issue I am going to do the same thing! Thanks for the great idea, -B
  11. I have been playing a lot since getting my 714 AP2's and I guess I am lucky no problems with my paint!

Can you send me a picture of  the club face for your most used iron. I just want to see if the wear on my iron is normal.

I wouldn't let a little paint fill keep anyone from purchasing these irons.  I have never posted one nick or scratch on my scorecard, and these irons will lower scores.  I love my 712's, and like I said they lost paint.  I would bet the 710's lost paint probably even the original 2008 model did as well.  The number is not as deep set as other manufacturers is likely the only cause for the problem.

I agree, but these are pricey clubs. I received my AP2 714's yesterday and played 18 today. great feel, great performance and longer than my Taylor Made Tour Preferred. A may take a while to dial these in but they are sweeeeet! great feel.

  15. Andrew A, love the paint in the numbers! looks like a nice winter project while I wait for the snow to melt this year. Keep on swinging

Hi,  If you have 5-7 business days free, please take it to your shop and have them get a shipping label and we will take care if it for you.  If not, it is okay to wait until the end of the season and we will take care of it at that time.  Whatever is easiest for you.

I just purchased a set of custom AP2 714 irons, and am a little disturbed by this thread of the paint coming off the numbers. It really won't affect performance, but which the cost of these irons, you would expect better quality.

No disrespect to what you are all saying they are irons, you use that make constant contact with the ground after. 1 year of use my paint fill and sweetspots are all worn but what do I expect, does not affect performance one bit and its part of what happens no different than a sand wedge wearing out over time except the irons aren't really wearing out they are just showing the effects of use! I just hope you all have an open mind

No disrespect taken Brett.  Have no issues with performance. They are still one of the finest irons I have ever struck.   My only reason for bringing it up is that the irons are not old enough nor do they have enough swings on them to be wearing the paint off yet.  It is just the 9 iron in my case.  More of an FYI for our friends at Titleist to look at a potential issue.

I have had the 714's AP2s since their release (same with the 712 and 710 irons) and have not noticed any "abnormal" wear on the paint fill on the numbers.  Hopefully the comments here are just a limited circumstance.  I do notice that the paint does tend to wear off on the shorter irons because I play with them more and practice with them more.  That being said, the paint has worn off on the 9 and shorter irons on the 710 and 712 irons, but has not yet worn off (as I'm sure it eventually will) on the 714s.

The good news is that Titleist always has stood behind their products and will address any issues you may have.  Personally, even if my paint was wearing off, it wouldn't impact performance and I would want to be away from my sticks for a week to get them repainted - especially now that the weather is getting nicer and we can actually get out and put them to use more regularly.

Hi Cathi. Can I take the irons to any store that can return Titliest clubs for repair or must I return them were I purchased the clubs?

also the face of my clubs showed immediate wear.  Is this normal? My old 710's do not have the same look.

Hi Patrick,   The Warranty department will take a look at it and will make the determination whether the wear is abnormal for the amount of time that you have owned the clubs.  Just let the pro know that you want that checked as well.

Yes, you can take them to any shop and make sure the shop asks for a shipping label and priority.

Cathi this is the tread with the picture i took in april of 2014 of the club face.  After only 6 months and about 20 rounds of golf the wear was what i would call above normal.  I have a set of Cwys that I purchased off of ebay used (x forged) with about 100 rounds of golf that show no wear hardly at all.  It is my fault that I did not return them sooner so I understand that the Warranty department believes the wear is normal.  I do not care about the numbers on the bottom.  Please return the clubs as soon as possible.  I love the way the AP2 irons play, just not how they stand up to normal play after 6 months.

    Thanks

    Pat

Where did you buy them? A reputable dealer or inexpensively on line? How much did you pay?

Well how did you purchase your irons?

I purchased them through my local pro. I will be seeing him next week. I am sure he will return them Titleist. The club faces on some of the irons have small rust spots after 2 rounds. Most likely a problem during manufacturing. Titleist makes great clubs and I know they will back up their products.

Titleist Rep - is this a known issue? it appears this is the 2nd post of paint issues.  Also like i asked in previous post, it seems the demo sets in the big box stores - the paint is missing on most of them.  was this a production issue? if i do purchase - what is the warranty on something like this? Thank you

I dont think this is a regular occurrence with the irons,  i've had my set of AP2's since the release and have had no issues with the paintfill.   Still as glorious as the day they came in with several rounds under the belt.

I just placed an order for a set of AP2 714's. I wish I had discovered these posts before I placed the order. I guess the paint is only aesthetics but for the price on these irons one should expect better.
