Can't decide which 714 clubs to buy AP 2s Reg or Stiff shaft or AP1s Reg shafts x95.  Been on the range with my old clubs, hitting decent, but not great for the last 3 months.  Hitting about 1-2 club less than hitting the above clubs at the local golf shop.  Cranking lower irons decently on the monitor with both sets.  Mid irons so-so.

Use to play a lot when younger, but slowed down to luckily if once or twice a year.  Got the itch again and want to get at least a single digit..... Was a weak 10-12 hdcp, strong 15 when I stopped playing regularly.  Physically the same Height and Weight, and can move around just the same.

    Help me......

Sounds like you may have been hitting some of the clubs and everyone seems to hit the ball longer in the simulator, perfect conditions.  Ensure that the fitter is certified and he/she should be able to fit you properly.  If you are only playing once or twice a year, you may not want to invest in forged clubs and stay with AP1s.  As far as type shaft and whether to get stiff or regular, that is between you and the fitter.

    Thanks Chuck,

Thanks for the advice.  I am planning to play at least  1-2 times a month and hitting the range once a week.

Just trying to work on my accuracy on getting on the green, next will be short game.  Would you reccomend that if

I will play more that I use the AP2s.

I play AP2s and play four days a week.  My handicap runs from 9-11 and again forged are a difficult club and are not for someone who play sparingly, in my opinion.  AP1s are easier to hit and more foregiving, but you seem to be set on AP2s, and the price difference is substancial.  You never mentioned what type of club you currently play.  Are they blades. If you are accustomed to playing a blade then AP2 is the club for you.  Again go to the fitter who is a professional.

Why don't you wait a couple of months?  Unless your old set is really off on lie for shaft flex and you are compensating, you should get some more practice in to see how well your ball striking is coming.  AP2s are forgiving for a forged head, but AP1s will fairly well reward you for any hit within the groves of the face.  You'll have more unstable hits with the AP2s outside of the sweet spot.  The time on the driving range helps, but I keep missing the flat level spots on the course, so my on course accuracy varies some from a range and a whole lot from mats/simulators.

Then a fitting will match you better with where you are then than where you may be now.

first off, I have cavity backs, d2s,  the clubs are fair/good condition, I wash and clean my clubs after every session whether on the range or on the course.

I've noticed a lot of people can't decide which ones to pick, the AP1s or 2s.  I have a fitting session coming up in June, so its a long wait.  Its just like a kid in a candy store, don't know what to do.  I guess its hitting the range and course to get the groove back.

The thing i'm worried about is workabilty, would I be able to draw or fade occasionally with the AP1s.

    Hi Mark,

    Thanks for your question.

You will certainly answer all of you questions at the fitting, but keep in mind that the AP1's are a great combination of forgiveness and workability. The most important thing is to find an iron that will help you shoot lower scores.

Keep us up to date on the fitting.

I keep hearing about guys buying a mixed set. Long irons are AP1s Mid and Short irons are Ap2s. I am curious what the community thinks of that set up.

I have been playing the AP-2 712s now for over two years.  I play four to five times a week, like Chuck Z.  During my fitting, I tried the AP-1s, the MBs, the CBs, and the the AP-2s.  Of those, the AP-2s gave me the best performance, looked the best to me, and just felt right.  I got the Dynalite XP R300 shafts all the way through my two Vokey wedges.  I pretty consistently maintain between a 6.5 and 8.5 index.  If I had the savings, I'd probably upgrade to the 714s, but I'll most likely wait to see if the next generation irons are even better for me.  I purchased and played a set of fitted investment cast irons when that style of iron first came out, but they had the look of a blade.  That style just fits my eye better and the AP-2s give me that.

It makes sense.  The mid irons are the most difficult to hit and the AP1s are the more forgiving.

I myself have all AP1's but my brother inlaw play that mixed set and loves them .  I believe some tour players have this setup as well .

I used to play AP2 712 5-PW. I replaced just the 5,6 (and sometimes 7) with new AP1 714s. Now I have MUCH more consistency with those irons, and that usually translates to more distance as well. But, most importantly, I now have much more CONFIDENCE when I pull the AP1 5 or 6 iron. Something that was lacking with those two irons when I was using AP2 5+6. I think I have had more great shots with my new AP1 5 and 6 irons in the 13 or 14 rounds I played so far this year, than I did my entire year last year with my 5 and 6 AP2s. And I played over 100 rounds last year! The new AP1-714s are awesome. Definitely, consider them, at least in the mid/longer irons.

I still continue to hit my AP2 5 and 6 irons, but mostly for practice on the range or when I go out for a few holes just before sunset. When I am hitting them sweet all the time, I am very confident in my entire iron game.

FYI, I was fit for my AP2s and subsequently, the three added AP1s. I highly recommend a mixed set if you are having trouble with the mid/long irons. For the shorter irons, which you would usually hit much better anyway (at least I certainly do), if you are up to a 14 or 15 handicap, you can't go wrong.  For what it's worth, I am in my late 50s, in good shape, play 3-4 days per week in season, with an index that hovers around 9ish.

    Mark,

There's a simple solution for your problem. Rather than you trying to make the decision on your own, invest the small amount extra and go to a Titleist Certified Fitting facility. There you will find someone who is trained to help you determine what clubs(or combinations) best suit you. They have the knowledge and the equipment to let you try many different clubs, shafts, etc.

The primary result of my fitting was the confidence that I now have the correct equipment suited to my game, and that really clears my mind when playing. If I hit the ball badly, I know the problem is not the equipment-it's me. It simplifies finding a solution by letting me work on my swing. I don't have to question my equipment any more.

.Thanks for the info guys.  Went to LV two weeks ago and hit the AP1/714s, no comparision to TM.  TM feels just to clinky, and when you look down just don't seem right.  We eliminated Cally, TM, and Mizu.

When hitting the AP1s/2s it feels like hitting a club.  I still have a fitting date 2 weeks from now so its still a long wait.  Just wondering if some of you who use the AP1 are able to work the clubs a little when needed to.  Not all the time, just when need to.  I would rather hit it straight as possible, but I do land behind trees.  Hopefully, with new clubs I'll be in the fairway more and would like to have fun and "try to" work it when I can.

Also hit a hybrid and that had a good feel to it too.  It was on the mat so little deceiving..  Think it was a 913 h/R shaft.

Again, would rather buy "quality clubs" vs "market name".  Hitting 60 is "ego" buster, so its quality thats going to last and having fun out there  and trying to get a low index.   AP1s or 2s.....what a delemma.....

I would definitely go for a fitting.  I purchased a full set of AP1's (4I thru W2) this spring and was fitted +1/2, 2* up, and Reg flex XP95.  I've always played standard off the shelf length and lie, and stiff flex.  So, I was probably always playing clubs that didn't fit me, but after awhile I just adapted to what I had.  I feel much better now knowing I'm playing equipment that fits.  IMHO, I would definitely consider the AP1's.  I too thought about the AP2's because I'm a decent golfer and thought I should be playing clubs geared more towards a better player.  Then I came back down to earth and realized I only really play once a week in my 9 hole league, and then maybe five or six other 18 hole rounds during the season, so why challenge myself with trying to consistently hit a forged club well when I can probably enjoy my limited golf experience more each season with a more forgiving club like the AP1, and still maintaining the Titleist quality.  I really, really like the AP1's and I can shape shots with them when I want to... maybe not as easily as the AP2's, but I still can.  I'm turning 57 this summer and for me, I feel like I've hit it out of the park with my purchase of the AP1.

    Good luck!

The lowest loft iron I carry is an 8 iron.  I've been playing AP1s for 2 years now.

I have what could be classified as a so-called "senior" setup:  13* draw driver, 3W, 7W, 4-22H, 6-29H, 7-34H, AP1 8-PW, SM4 50-08 and 54-11 1* strong, 58-06 and 54-07 stock loft and 7H putter.  I broke 80 last year.  Also shot +1 at the National City course.   The 7-34 has produced quite a few tap in birdies.  The driver is A flex and from the 3W down to PW is regular.  The wedges are S200.

An AP1 PW actually works better on a long bunker shot in soft sand vs the 50-08.  I use the 50 around the greens and for pitching because it works better.

    Hey, Mark!

    I have AP2 stiff and AP1 regular.

I get professionally fitted every year as one's swing does change.

I've heard so many stories, but going from regular to still has really improved my accuracy.

People say the default is to go with less stiff shafts, but I would never make that decision without a pro's help.

Hope this helps you. (I'm just an amateur, so what do I know).

    Good luck!

Thanks for the comments everyone.  I really like DaveB's. comments and to maintain that kind of Index is really great news.  For the amount he plays you must have a smooth swing, great concentration, and great tempo.

I'm 60% picking the AP1s, the fitter will be the only person who will either confirm or recommend other clubs.  I hope they have time to do the whole line-up even though I can't afford a full new set at the moment.  I don't know if they are going to use the full range (goes downhill) or if they will set up a backdrop with a mat, do any of you know?

Well gang, had my fitting the other day and was in for quite a surprise, some good, some bad.

As for the Driver and Hybrid it was pretty much cut and dry.  Got fitted for the 913 D2, 10.5, Setting at A3, Bassarra R Flex,

50g and 21 degree hybrid 913H Diamana Blue R Flex, 72 hy, Setting at C3.

Now for the irons, I could hit either fairly well, but  we pursued going with the AP1s because of being on/off the course all these years.  (and I really agree with that).  As for the shafts, I thought I could get away using the xP95 R300s, but the fitter steered me more towards the Kura Kage graphite, R Flex or the AeroTech i95 carbon/steel R flex.

The Aero Tech to me feels better swinging, but it cost a little more.  They did recommend going 2 up because of my swinging, but I know that I can correct the little swing hitch that I makes me do that angle.  So I really don't want to bend it at this time.

The question is do you all think that I can get away with using the Xp95s at R300 flex, if the store charges me an arm and a leg for the Aero Techs i95 (which I really do love).  I just haven't been "in the game" lately to hear about this Aero Tech shaft and how it will hole up for a guy like me, who has just gotten back into swinging, trying to get consistency.

I have a set of graphites now, but really doesn't feel that comfortable constantly when I practice with them so I'm kinda wishy washy on the KuoKage shaft.

Any Suggestions....  Priority  AeroTechs, XP95s, Kuro Kages..... Help me...

Whoa, don't know if my last post went through, lost titleist somehow.

Like I said earlier, You can't go wrong with Titleist, Superior Products, Superior Service, Superior Associates, Superior fitters...All of them.

Cathi asked me to call her and I did.  We spoke about my concerns and what happened during my fitting.  She said she will that she will get in touvch with the local rep and have him call me.  I just so happen had this afternoon off so I went to the local golf shop where I'm going to pick up the clubs from.  I had the simulator all to myself since everyone else is working.

I tried the Kuro Kages with a 6 iron head, they are good, but not comfortable for me.  I tried the XP95s and it felt like my old clubs, but the hits were a lot sweeter.  I was able to hit it 163-170 on the carry with about a 7 yard roll.  Not too shabby.  I told the sales associate I'll let him know because Titleist might call,  I left my cell in the car, guess what, they called.

I explained to the local rep about the fititng and he said what ever the customer wants, shafts, clubs, mixed sets, it can be done.  I explained height, weight, my goal, and just what happened in the store.  He siad go for the consistancy.  The AEROTECHs are awesome, but I'm a "blue collar" worker so can't do it right now.  So my mind is made up.

AP1s, XP95s, R300s, standard lie. On to the range and course.  Maybe in the Fall/Early next year 915 D2s and Hybrid.

Time to have fun... FORE!!!! opps I meant FOUR (par baby)...Thanks everyone.
