How can you determine if a used Scotty Cameron is a fake or the real deal?

It'll come from an authorized dealer.

Hi Ed,
Thanks for the note. You can send a Scotty Cameron putter into Scotty's Custom Shop for authentication. Here is a link with more information: http://www.scottycameron.com/authentication/default.asp
Keep in mind, your best bet to ensuring you purchase authentic products is to always buy from an authorized Titleist golf shop. In the meantime, here are some tips on how to spot a fake:

Mike's answer is great. I would suggest to just become as familiar as you can with Scotty's product. There are many websites, including Scotty's own, that are filled with information and pictures that you can compare with the putter you're trying to buy. The more you know, the less likely you are to be fooled.

I will give you my two cents here in this matter. I have worked at Dick's Sporting Goods the past few summers between college, and have seen many fake Scotty Camerons. I own about 10 Scotty Cameron Putters, from the Tei3 to the Studio Select, and the most common thing I notice is the quality of the paintfill. A lot of the counterfeit putters do not use the gel that Titleist uses in the three dots, and the shaft band seems to always misspell a word or two. Hope this helps!( I know it's a bit late! )

i used to have a similar mindset. i couldn't justify paying $300+ for a putter where you can find other new ones from anywhere from $50~$200. i just randomly came across scotty golo s and it made me feel like i had to buy it.
Do i think it's expensive? yes. Do i think it's worth it? yes.
when i was raving about the putter earlier this year when i first got it, everyone said it might be because i'm in the honeymoon stage. but i gotta say this honeymoon stage is lasting a long time. it still amazes me when i putt, the way it rolls. no skids and no bumping.
it's a club that you're going to use it on every hole, well except for those hole outs, and there's a high chance you'll keep this putter for very long time if you find the right model. i don't think anyone who's purchased or owns scotty putter will ever say they feel like they got rip off for paying so much for a putter.
just go for the brand new one from an authorized dealer. authorized online dealers can save you on the tax...

I always gamed other brands until maybe 3-4 years ago. It wasn't necessarily the price, it's I wasn't exposed to Scottys so was unaware. Once I found them though on my quest to improve my game and upgrade my equipment it was love at first sight. Scotty's feel different. I know part is probably mental but I haven't rolled any other putter that is that smooth feeling. I now have 4 Scottys. :-)

Under the "too good to be true", Titleist has arrangements with retailers to protect both the product and the pro shops from predatory pricing. No one gets a Titleist discount based on volume to undercut the rest of the market.
