I am currently a 7 handicap playing 710 ap1. Two years ago I was a 18 playing bulky cally's and got the ap1's to still give me forgiveness but force me to become a better ball striker. Now with that mission accomplished I'm trying to work the ball to get closer to the pin and lower my scores more. I'm able to work the ball a little but I find the ap1 inconsistent when trying to cut or draw the ball I think due to the offset. I recently played a set of ap2 on vacation and loved them. I was able to cut the ball without fear of pulling it left and draw ball without blocking it right. The only thing was I was inconsistent with the long irons often just hitting low stingers a little thin. My thought is that because of my length (ap1 pw -150/ ap1 7 iron - 180/ ap1 4 iron - 215). If I am faced with a long approach, using an ap1 long iron and just getting it up in the air and straight is all i will need while when I'm at more manageable scoring yardages I will be able to work the ball to the pin with the ap2.

So my questions are; is this a good idea? How much would a combo set of 712 ap1 4,5,6 irons with 712 ap2 7-pw cost. I know it depends on up charges for shafts and grips, But just ballpark with the stock stiff shafts and grips. Also I know the lofts are different between the two so would it be better to weaken the ap1 lofts or strengthen the ap2 lofts.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

[/quote]

There is no upcharge to ordering a mixed set with standard shafts and grips. Length, loft and lie adjustments are also no charge when you are ordering a custom set. As far as bending the lofts, it depends on the lofts you are accustomed to in your previous set and keep in mind that you will change the bounce angle. Bending them strong will reduce bounce, bending them weak will increase bounce. A good fitter should be able to help you with that choice.

Re: ap1 ap2 combo set

Titleist doesn't have a lot of packaged sets laying around like some of the other OEMs. A mixed set doesn't necessarily raise the cost, although resale/trade-in one may suffer. In round numbers with some negotiating, you can probably look at $110-125 for an AP1, $135-145 for a CB or MB, and $140-155 for an AP2. You can consider ordering just the 7/8/9/PW as 712 AP2 and keeping the 4/5/6 as 710 AP1.

Rather than replace the AP1 710, maybe you might want to order AP2 4/5/6 and your next new love - CB or MB.
