    Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to get some thoughts out there about which head to get. I don't hit a very hit fairway wood, so I was thinking of getting a 4-wood (17*) instead of having a 3-wood in my bag. But I know that the 913 F comes with a 4-wood (17*) or would it be better to get a 913 FD with 15* and then add some loft (to get close to the 17*)?

The 913 F head is a bit smaller then the FD model, but the FD said it is lower spinning then the F model. Which do you think would be better for my ball flight?

    Thanks for any help,

    Sam

  2. Sam, great question...I think we all can identify with your points in one way or another.  The Fd while a larger head does have less spin and is a great option if you primarily hit your 3 metal off the tee.  If you primarily hit your 3 metal off the turf in the fairway and not so much on the tee then the F may be a better option.  I have both and depending on which course I am playing I put one or the other in the bag.  I feel the 913Fd is a better head than the 910Fd, seems easier to hit...just a thought.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Sam,

Hard to tell as we cannot see the ball flight.  I'd say best to demo the clubs both off the tee and in two fairway situations (tight lie, rough)  to see which is better.  Also might want to go through them on a launch monitor to see how the ball reacts.  (side spin, backspin, clubhead speed, etc...)

Knowing this and the typical course condition you play in would help narrow down the club.

    Hi Greg,

Thanks for the reply. I actually went to get tested on the monitor, but they said that I hit the TM Stage 2 fairway wood a little bit higher and a few more yards in carry. But I'm not a TM guy, so I am sticking with my Titleist equipment.  But the shaft they had me try was a super custom shaft that Titleist doesn't offer in their selection.

I didn't get a chance to try out the FD as the fitter said I would benefit more from a 4-wood.

what would you recommend to help with a higher launch?

    Thanks,

    Sam

The biggest difference for the less than highly athletics of us is the weight is moved forward in the Fd.  The F should gain height better due to the rear loaded weight.  The Fd with the more forward weight will be a more penetrating weight and allow more workability to shape shots to draw/fade.  The F will actually do more to keep the flight straight.

    Hi Don,

Thanks for the tips.  So what I'm getting from your post is that the 913F is the better head and it should help with the launch angle, is that correct?

So do you think I should go with the 3-wood or 4-wood?

    Thanks,

    Sam

4 wood.  The other benefit is using one instead of the "traditional' 3 and 5 wood is you have room for a 4 wedge setup.

Also, your lie has to be pretty plush to hit a 15 fairway off the deck.

I personally hit an 18 fairway farther than a 15 fairway.

    I carry a  910F 19* and another vendor's 9 wood.   Works for me.

    Hi Chris,

Thanks for the insight.  I actually use my fairway wood from both the tee and off the turf (and of course from the rough and desert. :) )  But I would say that I use it a few more times off the tee than the fairway, as I'm not the longest hitter, so par-5s, I usually play in 3 shots.

Since I don't have a high launch, do you think the FD would hurt me, since it spins less?

    Thanks,

    Sam

Samuel; I'm in the same boat as you. i can't seem to get a 3 wood more than 8 or 10 feet off the ground (if that much) , but for some reason, with just the 2* more loft (15* 3wood - 17*4wood)  I can get the 4 wood much higher than the 3wood and more distance. I'm not a long hitter, but My 4 wood is about 185yrd. off the ground and off the "T" 200yds. and my driver is only 200-215yds. and I can always count on my 4 wood to be straight, so on tight fairways or short par 4's I'll hit my 4W instead of my driver. I also carry a 7W instead of a 5W. With the 7W I have about the same outcome as My 4W vs. a3W. Only thing I've found (if I'm correct) is with the 913's I don't think there's enough adjustment (up or down) in the 3W or 5W to get a 17* 4W.

    Hi Norris,

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad I'm not the only one out there that is in this situation. I just thought  was the odd man out as I see so many people with 3 & 5-woods, but no one ever really has a 4-wood.

So I'm thinking of getting the 4-wood because it seemed to launch higher, maybe due to the higher loft. But since the Titleist clubs can adjust their lofts (up to 1.5* or lower it by that much), do you think I should just get the 15* model and then tweak it to 16.5* (close enough to the 4-wood) and then I can tweak it back down to 15* if I play in windier conditions?  Or should I do the opposite and get the 4-wood (then be able to tweak it down when needed).

    Thanks for the help.

Hello Sam; The only problem is you can only adj. down the loft by .75*, but you can adj. the loft up by 1.5*  Since (to my knowledge) Titleist does not make a 17* 4 wood, you'd have to get a 15* 3W and you could adj. it up to 16.5* which would probably be close enough to a 4W, but if you went to a 19* 5W, you would only be able to bring it down to 18.25* which would still be a 5W. With the 3W, you could still tweek it back to a 3W if you wanted to. I think you would do well with a 3W adj. to 16.5*. You might be able to tweek the lie angle some to get a little more height. I think you will like the 4W much better than the 3W. It sure works much better for me. I also carry a 22* 7W instead of a 5W.  I think if you get a 3W and adj. it out to 16.5* you probably could'nt tell any difference in it and a 17*. If you can get fitted for this 3W, and tell him that your wanting to get a 4W loft out of it a good fitter may be able to get you a shaft that will give you a little higher trajectory also. Time after time when I tee off with my 4W, I'll have someone say , "boy, you sure can hit that 3W good", and if's funny to watch their jaw drop when I tell them it's a 4W. Good luck with your new club, and I'm sure you'll like it much more than a 3W. Hope this helps, and Let me know how it works out for you Sam.  Norris:

    Hi Sam,

In reading your post, you are correct that loft adjusts UP 1.5* but only adjusts Down .75* Remember too that when adjusting loft you also adjust the face angle. Face angle closes when adding loft and opens when decreasing loft.

I would go with the club that you will be playing in the neutral loft position the majority of the time, which sounds like the 4w.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Chris,

I was wondering about the face angle when adjusting the lofts, so this is good to know. I think I will try out the 4-wood and see how that is. Again, no one knows what you hit until you strip one down there and then they will ask. :)

    Thanks, Sam

I know this is 9 years later but I do have a couple questions about 913Fd vs 913F when it comes to lie angle. I placed a 913Fd 13.5 fairway next to a 913F 19 and noticed an approximate 0.5* lie angle difference. I also placed the 913Fd next to a 915F 16.5 and noticed the latter is about 0.5* flatter.

I find the 913Fd very forgiving off the tee but the ball has to be on a good lie to hit it off the fairway. The 913F is easier to hit off the fairway.

I actually had a 913F 17* vs a 915F 16.5 and noticed the former is a bit easier to hit off the fairway.

It's apparent there is about a 1.5 point swingweight difference between a 913F head and 913Fd head. I have to use a heavier weight on the 913Fd with the same shaft

So what is the question? Chuck, Don, and I might be the only ones old enough here to remember the 913's.
