Hey TT, I am in the market for new wedges and I can't figure out how I am going to make up my set. My current pw is 45* and I think I want to go 45*pw, 50.08, 56.11, and 60.10 but I want to bend the 56 to 55 for proper gapping. My question is, if I get a 54.11 and bend it a degree weak to 55 it will change the bounce to 55.12, am I correct? and if I get the 56.11 and bend it a degree strong to 55 it will be 55.10. what do you think I should do?

    any recommendations would be appreciated.

You should get a wedge fitting and let the pro analyze what would be best for what you are wanting.  It's very comforting knowing that the wedges are set up for you and that the shot you just hit to two feet is the result.

I carried the SM c-c 50-08 and 54-11 (bent to 55) for over a year.  Worked great.   The 50-08 was bent to 51 when I used it with the Eye 2 irons (it worked better than the set W) and to 49 when with the AP1s.

My current setup is  AP1 PW (46), SM4 54-11 and 60-10 bent 1* strong and 64-07.  This sis similar to my 2009 setup (47 PW 55 SW, SM2 60-07 and 64-07).   20 yard gap between the PW - SW - LW and 15 yard between the LW and XW.   They overlap with choking on full shols and pitching distance is 10 yd less than a full choke with each club, except the 64 (full choke and full pitch are the same).  It is a tossup because both have the M grind.   My 54-11 bent to 53 works well and I use that vice 49-07 and 55-12 to simplify my wedge setup at the top end because I was often faced with "pick and choose" shots.   I would tend to lean toward bending the 54 to 55.   Gives you a little more bounce for the soft bunkers.  I found I used my 50 and 60 more often on the fairway.  If you decide to go to a 3 wedge setup, the 54 is a better choice because you can bend your PW to 46 and bend the SW-LW 1* strong.

The 60-10 is a great wedge and much more versatile vs the 60-07 (works better in bunkers).

    My other post is hanging.

If you want to get an idea of what an M grind wedge with 12* bounce is, try hitting the 58-12.  The 60-10 already has 10* bounce and it is M grind.   This might help your decision in choosing the 54-11 vs the 56-11.    This way you get the feel of 10* and 12* bounce with M grind.

Another idea is to bend the 50-08 to 49-07, leave the 54-11 stock and bend the 60-10 to 59.   I did this with the SM c-c 50-08 and and 54-14, and the SM4 60-10.   The 60-10 works great this way because it works in a wide variety of conditions (it has been my primary greenside bunker club in both soft and hard sand for a year now).    I had a goal at the end of last year to simplify the top end of my wedge setup by getting a used SM4 52-12 - it gave an in between full swing distance, worked better in sand vs the 50 and a little more for long bunker shots vs the 54-14.   I just acquired the 54-11 (had it bent to 53) and it works well in all conditions plus slides better in soft sand vs the 52-12.

I am a bit biased toward the 54-11 mainly because you can bend it 1* strong if you want to go to a 3 wedge setup.   If you bend it to 55, you'll have enough bounce for the fluffy sand.   You may have to play digging shots on firm turf or hard sand.

If you plan on sticking with a 4 wedge setup, then here are some up sides to bending the 56-11 to 55-10.
    1.  10* bounce works in a variety of conditions.   You may have to play more of a sliding shot in soft sand.   You can open the face a little more in wet or hard sand.
    2.  You can hit a higher shot off firm turf because you don't have to de-loft it like a 55-12.   The other side is the 55-12 has more spin when you hit a digging shot so the ball will check.

The 60-10 is a great all around wedge.   I set mine at 59 because I wanted less bounce around the greens and turf but still be able to hit out of bunkers.   I can open the blade in soft bunkers and blast away.  In hard bunkers I either play a pitch or cut shot a little further back in the stance.  With wet sand I play more forward and open the blade a small amount.  I prefer it over the 60-07 because the latter is absolutely horrible in sand (the 64-07 actually plays better in soft sand).

A final thought would be 50-08, 54-11 and 58-09.   If you ever got the hankering to play an X wedge, you could add a 62-07.

Lou; Was looking at a Vokey 58*-09 today, and was wondering if the 09* bounce would be good for all around shots? (fairway, rough, sand etc.) I'm thinking of dropping my CG11 56* &  60* (both mid bounce) and going with theVokey 54* & 58* but not sure what bounce to get.

Hey Lou, I am more of a digger type player when it comes to full shots and pitch shots around the green and my other option was like you said 50.08, 54.11, and 58.09. But I was really wondering how the 58.09 compares to the 60.10 because I have always played a 60* and it is basically my bunker club and I use it around the green a lot. My current set up by the way is 45*pw, 52.08, 56.14, and 60.08 and I was just having too big of a gap between my 45pw and my 52 gap, I even tried choking down to the steel on my pw and it was just an awkward yardage for me so that is why I really need the 50*. I will also try the 58.12 to try to get an idea on which bounce feels better to me the 55.10 or 55.12. but I think I know for sure I am going to have to get a gap wedge closer to my pw like the 50.

The other option is to take your 60-10 and bend it to 59 (making it 59-09).  This works really well for me.   Saves you money on a  new wedge.   By bending to 59, you can get a feel for M grind with a 9* bounce.

You could also bend your 45 PW to 46 and bend your 52-08 to 51.   7* between a set wedge and a Vokey is about like 9* between two Vokeys.

For me, a 52 wedge isn't really a value added club over a 54 wedge.  5 yards difference for full swings.  I tried a 52-12 bent to 51.  Fabulous for pitching and some bump n runs.  Tended to dig a bit vs the 54-11 in a soft bunker.  The 54-11 has considerably more bounce on the leading edge than it advertises.

The 50-08 is a great wedge.   I had a SM c-c bent to 49 with the AP1 PW set at 45.   I also had it set to 51* when I had the Eye 2 and it did a pretty good job at stopping the ball on chip shots.   Did OK on long bunker shots.  The only issue with the 50-08 and 54-14 was a pick and choose thing (either or).   That is why I went to the 52-12 - simplify upper end of wedge setup (it was about equal in bunker performance vs the 54-14 and only 5 yards less than the 50-08).

Also briefly tried a SM c-c 58-12 with the thought of it being as good as the 258-12 that I used in 2007.   It was great in soft sand but generally horrible on firm  turf.   About like playing an Eye 2 LW.  Best thing to do is try it out.

What you described for your gap between the PW and the 52 was the same I experienced between my DIY PW (45) and SW (55).    Full swing distance on the PW was 110 and that of the SW was 85.    Main issue being hitting the sand wedge on firm turf.  I was able to pitch the PW 70 yards but had to pitch a 9 iron for the 80 yard shot.  With my AP1 PW, my full swing is 105 and pitch distance is 80 with 85-90 being choke down.

If you have an awkward distance with the PW, try pitching an 8 or 9 iron.

Lou, when you said that the 54.11 has more bounce than advertised do you mean it could possibly have say 14* of bounce instead? I am still thinking about going 45pw, 54.11 bent to 55.12, and 60.10 but if the the 54.11 bent to 55.12 may have 14* of bounce, do you think it would be better to get the 56.11 and bend it to 55.10. Which do you think would be more versatile? the 54 bent to 55.12 or the 56 bent to 55.10 as far as full shots and greenside bunker shots go? and last, do you think I will be stuck with those in between shots with the set up 50, 55, and 60 or do you think they will be about equal distances for me? I hit my 45* pw about 120 yards.

    Connor,

You are correct on the change that the bounce will incur once you bend those wedges (1:1).  Keep in mind you want your yardage gaps to not extend beyond 15 yards difference.

    Connor,

I have the AP1's and my PW is 45.

I did what you did but went with 50.12.  I bent my 56.11 to 55.10 and I LOVE IT!  These are my SM4's

Previously I have SM2's and was at 50.08, 56.11 (bent to 55.10) and a 60.07.  I realized I was digging and needed more bounce and through a fitting day with my awesome local rep tried out the 50, 56 and 60 SM4's.

The SM2s and SM c-c had full soles.  The M grind actually has more bounce on the leading edge vs the older wedges.  I found that my SM4 54-11 slides better in soft sand than the SM c-c 54-14.

  16. You are correct...bending lofts weak create more bounce etc...

One or two degrees is the max I would consider so the set up you are looking at makes sense.

    Good luck!
