I'm playing AP1s 4-9 with a 45* pitching wedge. Two wedges 54*, and 58*. I'm dropping my 4 hybrid to add another wedge to fill the PW-54* gap. I  could purchase the AW from the AP1 set which is 50* (to keep uniformity) or a 50* Vokey. Any thoughts on advantages / disadvantages would be appreciated.

The 50 Vokey is a great wedge.   I used the SM c-c 50-08 for over a year and a half.   I had it set at 51 when I was using Eye 2 irons (9 iron was 45*).   When I switched to AP1 I bent it to 49.   What I'm doing now is using a 54-11 bent to 53, a 60-10 bent to 59 and a 64-07 stock loft.  I don't really need a gap wedge because I am pretty proficient at working a PW.

The Vokey will stop the ball better because it generates more spin.   The set wedge will give about 5 more yards in distance.  One thing I found out is the PW actually works very well in soft sand.

I agree with you Lou; I played today (3-27) and had a sand shot to make. The pin was about 12-15 yrs. from the bunker, so instead hitting my 56* SW I hit my AP1 GW. It worked well out of the sand, but went way farther than I thought it would. The AP1 50* GW is great out of the fairway or rough, but not too good in a greenside bunker unless it's a really long shot. It will really blast the ball out of the sand.

The PW is good for about a 20-25 yard bunker shot.

The 54 is great for those types of sand shots (mine is bent to 53).

Thanks Lou. Good points. These are new, and I havent tried my new Vokeys outside yet, other than an indoor driving range. I went to my local PGA Store and hit both. I did get 5-10 more yards consistently with the SM4 Vokey. The AP1 is 50-07, and the Vokey was 50-08. The associate did say that the Vokey would get more spin (which I would expect) but said the design of the AP1 would provide better flight on hits that are off centered on full swings. (mishits) I love the look of the Vokey though. I think this weekend I will pony up the 20+ more dollars and get my 3rd Vokey............ Now I need to get them stamped.

From a indoor practice facility standpoint: I love them. I was playing  XJaws  last year.

    I am also playing AP1s 3-PW . I currently use 3 vokeys. 54 -11 , 56-11 , 58-08  I just feel  comfortable with this set up . I played a 52 and a 60 they were great sticks I just play better with the 54 and 58  . Hope this helps!

Thanks Chris T; Glad to have your input, since your info is more valueable coming from someone that uses these wedges, and like them better than the 56* & 60*. Makes me think even more about switching to the 54* & 58*.

I agree with Chris. I used Callw XJaws last season (52-54-60). I played 18 today for my first round this year. I do not regret changing down to 58. Now I'm Vokey 50-08, (instead of the stock AW), 54-12, and 58-09. The 58 might be my new favorite club. Easier to ball strike than a 60 and if you open it up you can still get it as high up as you will ever need.

At least we are deviating from the "traditional" 52-08, 56-11, 60-07 setup.

50-08 is an easy choice.  I had it 51-09 with my Eye 2s and I used it as a PW.   With the AP1s, I bent it to 49-07 and it worked OK also.    The only drawback is I sometimes had to make a choice between it and the 54 in certain situations (also the 54 got less use around the greens).

I've pretty much have been using a 54* Vokey since 2011 (when I switched from DIY).    I had my SM c-c 54-11 bent to 55 because I became comfortable with a 55* set wedge.   I played a SM c-c 54-14 when I switched to AP1s because it worked better than the SM c-c 54-11 around the greens.   The SM4 54-11 (bent to 53) is very versatile, so I dropped the gap wedge.

As far as lob wedges.....   I played a 258-12 between 2007 - 2009.  Great in most sand situations and it was my primary club around the greens.        Played a 64*  wedge between 2006-2011 (and now I am back).      Had SM2 60-07 and 64-07 from late 2009 thru mid 2011 (both were good wedges but the 60-07 was horrible in soft sand and no point using the 64-07 off turf because it had too much bounce on the leading edge).   I found the SM c-c 62-07 to be versatile and played it till last May.   I briefly tried the SM c-c 58-04.   I switched to the SM4 60-10 (and bent it to 59) last May because it stops the ball better than the SM c-c 62-07 and is better off tight lies vs the 58-04; the SM4 has been my main greenside bunker club and I use it a lot for tight pin positions from 50 yards in.   I also recenty added the 64-07 back in my bag - kind of missed having a 64 wedge available for that rare shot where it has to fly high and drop on the spot from a short distance.

The loft on my 60-10 is ideal (59*).

Looking over this posting I realized I incorrectly gave you 54-12, That should have been 54-14. (I'm a digger  not a sweeper). 50*-08, 54*-14, and 58*-09.

But after reading Lou's post I'm thinking about buying a 62*-07 to experiment with.

The 62-07 SM c-c was a full grind but had a wide sole.   My full pitch was ~35 yd.  I believe my full swing was about 55 or 60.   I got out of the Bunker From Hell (height from bottom of bunker to putting surface was 8 feet and it was a BIG bunker) with it by giving all it was worth and swinging away.

The SM4 62-07 has the same sole grind as the 64-07.   The latter works for a very short bunker shot from soft sand.

Certainly one could do a 3 wedge setup with the 50,56 and 62.

I play the AP1 50 degree and I like it a lot.  Its great out of the fairway and rough.  But I agree with what has been previously said, the Vokey wedge is going to have more spin and be better out of the bunkers.  Better all around probably.  The AP1 50 degree lands soft on the green but releases more than the Vokey probably will.  Just depends on what you're looking for.

The 50-08 is much better off tight lies vs the AP1 P so probably could say same about it vs the W.

I can hit a 25 yard bunker shot out of soft sand with the AP1 P.  It has a good amount of height too.

Also, on a related line, I like the AP1 P vs the Vokey 46 or 48.   Seems to hit much better.

But I did love the 50 to death!

I agree with you Brian. I have the AP1 50* W and it works well for me. It's good out of the fairway (about 85-90 yds.out) and for long bunker shots. I seem to do better with the AP1 50* W by landing a little short and letting it release to the hole, rather than hitting it long and hoping it will spin back.

Dan, I have the same AP1 setup (4-9), but I have a Vokey 46.08* instead of the AP1 PW. My situation was similar to yours, and I went with the Vokey, and I am happy. The only thing is that the AP1 AW will likely be easier to hit than the Vokey wedge due to the chunkiness and forgiveness of the AP1s. The Vokey wedges are rather thin blades, so if you're not having the best day striking the ball, it can work to your disadvantage.

Keano26, Update: I dropped my PW (45*) for another Vokey too. A 46. So now I have AP1 712s 4-9, SM4 Vokeys 46, 50, 54, 58. Cant wait for the weather to break si I can try it out. The 46, and 50 feel better at the indoor range, than the stock AP1s.
