A change from AP2 to AP1?

  1. I would love to hear some thoughts on switching to the AP1 after playing the AP2s.  I am currently playing with the 712 AP2 and love them.  That being said, I would love to gain another stroke or two along with some consistency.  I am a 10 Hdc but seem to be stuck at that.  I am ready for another set of irons and automatically thought to get the same specs in the 714 AP2.  But I am starting to wonder if my age is starting to matter more.  I have a stiff shaft in my irons and wonder if I should go to regular.  I had my swing speed checked indoors today and it was 70 with a 6 iron.  This has me wondering if I need to make some changes with the irons if I am going to buy a new set.  I would like some thought on anyone that has changed from the AP2 to the AP1s and if they had any regrets.  Any other thoughts on changing to a regular shaft or even the new graphite shaft would be nice hear.  I currently hit the 6 iron 160 yards.  As I am thinking about what to do I will wait and hopefully hear some insightful responses.

    Thanks,

    John

Hi John, You ask some very good questions. I feel I can add some helpful relevant opinions. Once I straightened out my 913 Driver and wood selections, I upgraded my 822 OS irons with TT 300S shafts to 712 AP1's with Aldila VS Proto-T "By You" 75gram - R graphite shafts. Wow. My Scores dropped to 4 HC to Scratch depending on the course I was playing and my familiarity.. That said, after switching to AP1s with 75-Regular fiber shafts my swing speed is up from 71MPH to 82-88MPH. I use a hybrid in lieu of a 6 iron. My yardage has improved so well with my driver, fairways and hybrid, I most often take my subsequent shots with my Vokey wedges. I think the secret of my success is a composite of practice, lighter more flexible shafts and higher loft angles on all my club faces. So in summary, lighter more flexible shafts in your vertical launch angle is less than 17*. Your move to AP1 depends on swing speed, yardage as well as your vertical launch angle. If your launch angle is too low (consistently below 17-21*) stick with higher loft angle club face. If your vertical launch angle is over 17-21* go to the lower loft angle club. Compare AP1 and AP2 loft angles. They differ slightly. Choose the club that best suits your need. As always, validate this up with your PGA PRO. Eleven out of ten times, he or she is right. Happy holidays! Fairways & Greens Always, Arthur I have hit Titleist clubs all my life. I recommend hitting whatever club feels and works best for you.

John, I've asked the same questions as well. All I can recommend is trying to get to the best fitting experience you can find. I would also recommend trying the AP1s in the regular graphite as suggested above. You and I are about the same clubhead speed. I play with the AP2 in 6-P and the AP1 in the 4&5 Iron. I would like to go all AP1 but I have issues keeping the short irons down when I need to. So if you get the chance, try to hit several of the clubs throughout the set and not just the 6 iron if able.

    Hope that helps a little.

    -Nick

  4. Just switched from TT s300 to Aldila proto 75-t stiff shaft with my AP2 (love the feel off the face) swing more fluid with graphite shaft, hence more height and distance. I'm 75 and it made a difference.
