I really love titleist irons, but I don't know which one to get. The MBs are great and the AP2 are great. To tell you more about my game, I have a really high ball flight and love to draw the ball. My handicap right now is around a +2 or +3 My average drive is around 280 off the tee and m swing speed is around 110-115 mph. I currently have png s56s but those go very short. I loose 10 yards compared to other irons when I compare my current irons to other irons. So please give me an iron that will probably suit my game well, club-fitters.

  2. The MB's sound like a great fit however you will find that many tour pro's use both models...you simply should consider going to a demo day and trying both models...you may find that one fits your game better than the other.  They look similar at address so aesthetics should not be a major factor.

    Good Luck!

Hi Padraic,  One of our Advanced Fitters is travelling to Mobile this Friday to do several fittings and has the available time to do a fitting with you.  He has our Advanced matrix as well as a Trackman with him.  I will IM you all the details, including his fee, which will be rebated back if you purchase clubs.

Many more things are important than your stats. Your angle of attack is a huge factor. Look at tour players.

The successful blade players are all steep and take big divots. TW, RM , Scott , etc. if you miss a blade you must hit it fat. Thin doesn't work with a blade. The higher CG on the face means you must hit the ball higher on the face to make it perform well  Players like Stricker do better with an iron like the AP2 , shallow divot lower CG head.

fitting is much more  than numbers. The most important numbers in golf are the numbers on the scorecard.  Feel is equally important. It also must look good to you at address to build confidence. I've had several players that hit CB's higher and with better flight that they can with the AP1's or AP2's. I've also seen great golfers like yourself score better with more of a "game improvement " style head.  Different styles are built for a reason. Look at Png Eye 2 irons. One of the most popular irons in golfs history. Golfers flocked to them. They all had X flex shafts, very light swing weights and square grooves that tore the skin off the ball. These definitely worked for a lot of players, but not all. I'd say the the 714 AP2's are a modern day eye 2. They are like a mixed set. Long irons are much easier to hit that prior generations. Short irons dig more and act like a blade in the scoring clubs 7-w..

Bottom line. Get fit by someone who has a selection of heads. It is the only part of the club that hits the ball. Choose the head first , then play with shafts. If possible take a few options to the course. Go to a  hole where you know your distances , and hit a few shots with the different shafts.  How much roll out or spin do you get? Can you hit the ball up and down? How does it look and feel to you? Then get in the Trak Man to fine tune only.

That's great that you are on here to ask for advice. You seem like a pretty good player and since you already play with a set of blades, you will need to determine what you are looking for out of the next set of clubs. As you mentioned, the png S56s are a little short, but as are most blade type irons, they don't offer the most distance in irons, but offer the player other benefits if distance isn't one of the things they are looking for.

As others have mentioned, go to a fitting day or even try and demo the irons out and see what you like most. You are a pretty accomplished player, so you would know what trajectory, feel, sound, looks, etc. you are looking for. Then after you find the club head you like best, get dialed in for the shafts and spec for you (as someone else mentioned).  But have you also considered a combo set of the MB/AP2 irons, getting the benefit of both irons?

So it's hard to pick an iron for you, even based off of what you have told us because everyone is different in what they prefer. Look at the Titleist staff players, they all play different irons and even combo sets. Ben Curtis used to play the AP1 irons and he's a professional.

Good luck with what you end up getting and let us know what you get and how you like them.

I was down to the same decision as you are. I went with the ap2's and they are great. I switched from blades and they are much better on miss hits and you won't loose any workability. My pro who I take lessons from also changed and said he won't go back to blades. Also try project x 6.0 shafts, I got them in my new irons and they keep my ball flight and spin rate down.
