A little background;  I played a lot many years ago and just got back into playing again after a 10yr lay off.  I bought a used set of irons, 2-hyrbrids, and a 3W (all used).  I had the clubs checked to make sure they fit and basically I'm pretty standard length/loft/lie with my clubs.  This was all done before my lessons which have greatly improved (and changed) my swing.

I do not have a driver as of yet but I'm looking for one.  I've hit several demo clubs at the various dealers and my local course.

On the various monitors I've hit clubs on, my swing speed was as high as 95 on one, but as low as 70 on another.  But with virtually every driver I hit (various models and shafts), my back spin was between 3000 - 4000 rpm.  I understand that back spin will kill distance and with almost all Driver I hit my roll out was very short.

I did hit a 913D2 with Basara 50g Reg Flex shaft and it was by far the best of the bunch.  Launched straighter, with better take off and distance than the other manu. clubs (TM SLDR, R1, Superfast, RBZ; CLWY BB) and much better roll out.  However, my back spin was also very high with that club (3000+ RPM).

I know monitors are in all the stores, but with such a wide variance on swing speed, etc with the various I kinda wonder how accurate are they.

As I mentioned above, I just started playing again after a long lay off and broke 100 last week at my local course (the double pars 2-holes in a row on the back did not help my score!).  But I've taken several lessons from a local pro and my ball striking and control has greatly improved over the last few months (in fact, just the last two weeks it's all feeling like it's coming together).

Sorry for the long post.  I'm just looking for a little direction.  I know a fitting would help, but I'm on a budget so I'm looking at outlets for used clubs.

Sean, you may want to ask your local pro for some recommendations since he is actually working with you on improving your swing. The driver spin needed has a lot to do with angle of attack. Example: At 95 MPH swing speed you would optimize your total distance if you have a 0* angle of attack / 11* launch /2600 spin according to trackman data. If your angle of attack is on the + side(hitting up on the ball) you would benefit from less spin and if it was on the - side (hitting down) you would benefit from more spin.
  3. Im in a similar boat myself. Just started playing after a few years off. Im looking forward to see what responses you get on which driver is the best! Last time I played golf I was hitting a brand new 983K, so its been a few years.

The thing I like about Titleist drivers is their accuracy and I enjoy playing from the middle of the fairway and if you get that proper fit, you'll have more fun......and that is what golf should be all about......

  5. I agree chuck. I'll take long and strait over long and O.B. Any day

I recently purchased the Titleist 913 D2 9.5 degree driver and couldn't be happier. I recommend being fitted to whichever driver you decide on.  I spent a couple of weeks hitting every driver I could get my hands on to decide which one was right for me.  The Titleist won out hands down.  I am amazed at the feel and performance of the 913. The TM SLD was 6 yards further on average, but I wasn't as accurate with it.  I think the Titleist 913 is the best driver on the market, and I've hit just about every driver currently on the market before I decided the 913 was for me.  As stated before, I would highly recommend being fitted. That way you get the right shaft to fit your swing speed.

I've played a lot of drivers in the past but Titleist drivers have always been the lowest spinning drivers for me.  I agree that a proper fitting is in order so that the right loft, lie, shaft, and weighting can be recommended for your swing.  That is how I picked my 913D2 driver set-up, and I love it.
