  1. Playing with 30 year old Hogan Radians When I hit in the sweet spot they go nice. I have been told the newer clubs Titleist have a bigger sweet spot. I like the idea of the Ap 2 Forged. I have been off playing for years because of just no time. Now I have the time and would like to up grade all my clubs. So it is between these two Ap 1 Ap 2 Hopefully the last set I buy at 61 years old. I am not a great golfer but would like to get back to play in the 80's . Or better for sure. So I would like to go with the Ap 2 Are they as forgiving as the Ap1's ? would the Ap 1's hit as long or as good? Terry Morris Walkertown NC

The AP1s would probably be more forgiving because the AP2s are a forged club.  Additionally, the AP1s are also going to play longer but , with the forged club that is not a problem, when I bought mine I had them set my lofts that same as the AP1s.  The lofts on Titleist clubs can differ 2-3 degrees from the competitors which would make those other clubs go farther.  When you are being fitted, you and your fitter can discuss distance and changing the loft of your AP2s if you are not happy with the distance.  Just remember there is a limit on how far they can bend them.  The forged club is for the better striker of the ball and has some forgiveness, but less than the AP1.....Bubba is our resident expert........cheers....  :-)

    Hi Terry,

    Thanks for the post.

The AP1's are our most forgiving iron line. They have the highest MOI and are designed to be forgiving, yet appealing to the eye. When it comes to distance with the AP1 Vs. AP2, that is player dependent. It really depends on what launch conditions need to be improved and what works best for your game.

Try to find a local fitter and hit both models. That will give you a good idea as to what set of irons work best.

    Good luck.

  4. Thanks for your help. The Hogan's irons I have used for years are forged. Like them . Hope I will be happy not getting another set of forged.

I hit both AP1 and AP2 irons to figure out what was best for me.  After about 20 hours and having several professionals and two different fitters watch, we finally decided the AP1 was best for my swing and game.  I only took that long due to working at a public course and having ready access to pro's.  And the two fitters live in my area, so I caught up with them at several demo days.  it is well worth the time to do side by side comparisons and your local fitter will work with you best they can.  Good luck and I hope you enjoy the new sticks, when you get them.

  6.  That you for your input. I have talked to a golf course pro that we use to play softball on the same team.  He said he would help me. He is hitting Ap 2's    I hope that I am good enough to hit the AP 2's  I have played the forged irons for years I hit them fair. Thank You.

I have 712 AP2s and I love them, if you are a pretty good ball striker I would recommend them!

I had 20 year old Titleist's and I hit the new 6 iron 15 yards farther than the old 5 iron. The forged 712's are amazing for me. Whatever you choose, you'll love them, guaranteed!

You should try for yourself. Don't overlook the CB's. Any of these will be easier than the apex irons. I grew up on blades. I don't like the feel of AP1's. I actually hit the CB's and the Ap2 irons higher and better than the ap1's. I hit the CB's highest of all. I own 712 CB's and 714 AP2's with the same shafts. Nothing feels better than the CB's especially in the short irons. Ap2's are a clear winner in the long irons though.

I just replaced a set of beautiful older Wlson Staff Forged Tour blades with the AP1's after not playing for many years,   When I was younger and playing more when I bought the Wlson's I was a much better and more consistent player than now,  shooting in lower to mid 80's in leauge play.   Now,  I'm playing 1.5 times a week and after a couple of rounds made a decision to buy some new sticks,  After trying many brands and models, I settled on AP1's Irons and 913 Woods.  I had a long fitting session with a fantastic fitter named Pete Smith at Miles of Golf in Fairfield OH.   Pete took the time and not only fitted me with the right shafts and grips, then spent some time on finding the right driver to go along with the Iron Set.  After multiple swings with 3-4 top rated brands and fixing my swing issue, (Face to closed at impact) we continued and found that the 913D2 and Basarra shaft fit my swing best. So from this , what I would recommend would be find a mature fitter ( Not the 18 year old at Golf Explosion or  Tee Time,  but one that will give you that personalized fitting service. (The price of the clubs is the same everywhere!)

Tell him what you are trying to achieve, and listen to his recommendations.  I started with the AP1's because of research I had done, past Titleist experiences (DCI,'s etc.),  and when it got down to choosing a club, that's what I wound up choosing.

I'm 57 and plan on playing them for quite a few years yet.   A few weeks later and 4 more rounds, I am totally satisfied with my choice,   Matter fact, I just replaced my 30 year old Bullseye putter and Wilson Sandy Andy wedge with a Scotty Cameron GoLo5s and Vokey wedge w 58*/11* . The Scotty C was fitted from Stock and the Vokey will be here next week.  I am enjoying my game much more the second time around.  Technology has changed, us older guys need to take advantage of it.

    Good Luck,

    Mike

Hello , about 6 months ago I was fitted for and purchased a set of AP1 irons and I have been extremely pleased. It has been the best thing for my game.

I hit them higher and straighter than any iron I have had, very forgiving as well.

I have played Adms and TM but these by far are the best irons I have ever played

    Good luck and play well.

Find a fitter and work with him. You may actually find that the best combination is the AP1 in the longer irons and the AP2 in the shorter irons. Don't make you selection based on distance. Think about controllable balls flight and yardage gaps between the clubs in your bag. It doesn't matter what the number on the club is, what matters is how often you hit it close to the hole!

I was fitted for miz MP-63 irons and brought my specs to the Titleist AP2s this June.  Coming ftom the 63s I've gained about a club in distance and much-much more forgiveness when I don't get to play as regularly as I'd like.  I play to a 4 handicap and the AP2s are like a breath of fresh air.  I did try the AP1s and found them to be long (perhaps a 1/4 club longer than the AP2s) but not nearly as workable left-right-up-down, the flighting was downright terrible for me.

Obviously whichever set you choose be sure to get the right shaft for your swing.  If you need to gain some height on your shots,  don't really need to work the ball a lot and want/need lots of forgiveness then I would definitely suggest the AP1s as they get the ball up and going quickly.  If you like your current shot height, you're comfortable with your ball-striking and you'd like some forgiveness along with some shot-making then I'd suggest the AP2s...
