Trying to figure out how to configure my bag between driver and 4 iron so i'm looking for insight and opinions

    10 handicap

    Driver

    4-PW 714 AP2 with S300

    52, 56, 62 raw vokey

    Putter

so have 2 open slots in the bag...

I'm a high ball hitter with straight ball flight, maybe minor fade or minor draw

    I hit driver ~285 and 4 iron about 200

I usually don't like to hit driver on Par 4s shorter than 385 yrds and I have never been a big fan of fwy woods

I am looking for 2 clubs - one predominantly off the tee to hit fairways (~230ish) and another that's more for 2nd shots into long par 3/4s or short par 5s (~215ish)

I was thinking of doing 712U 18 deg and a 915hd 20.5 deg? does that sound reasonable? Better to just do a strong 915hd and the ap2 3 iron? Any opinions would be appreciated especially on forgiveness and the right degree spacing between the clubs.

    Thanks!

The other big orange> I am a big fan of the hybrids and love my new 18* with the Rogue 85 stiff shaft........that is my 2iron plus club.....I carry a 15* 913F but use it primarily for tight fairways off the tee (four pars).....prefer hybrids off the deck......go find an outdoor fitting or a demo day.....I am hitting it high and with a slight draw and dead on target........like them because they are great off the tee, easy to hit out of the rough, and killer off the deck.....just food for thought......my new set up will be  915D2 10.25*, 913F 14.25*, 915h 17.25*, 913h 18.50*, 913h 23.25*, 5 iron 26* - 56.10* Vokey  (I also have a 901H set at 20.50* which I might throw in and pull out the 913F or the 18.50 on a short Senior course for tournament play)....I do like options with my hybrids....I tried the hd heads and they are just not for me....could not get the consistency I needed......big orange country, chuck

  3. Just my two cents, however when I saw you play AP2, as do I, and I have both these clubs in my workshop...I prefer the 915HD or 915H vs. the 712U...

    FWIW, Good Luck!

Without you seeing a fitter, it will be difficult to get you to exactly the right setup to fill the gap.

I personally use a 712U 4 iron and a 915H 21° as my 3 iron. But, I also carry a 3 and 5 wood. Given yu are not a fan of the fairway woods (although I bet if properly fir you would love them!), I would suggest looking at a 17.5° Hd for the loner clubd and maybe a 21°H for the shorter. the H and Hd are a bit more forgiving than the 712U.

I am in a similar situation as you, I am a 9 handicap and have a fairly high ball flight with too much spin.  I have a 712U 2iron with UST recoil 680 shaft and a 915hd 17.5* with Aldila Rogue Black, I also have a 915FD 13.5* with Aldila Rogue Silver.   The 915's are such an improvement over previous years, I picked up a slight amount of distance with them over the 913's but even better I dropped a bunch of spin.   I am not a very big fan of fairway woods off the deck, however off the tee the FD is tough to beat and works well for me on tight driving holes or on shorter par 4's where I would rather not hit driver.

It's tough to compare the 915HD to the 712U as they are really different ball flights, even with similar lofts and shafts in the two.  The HD is going to be more forgiving, may give slightly higher ball speeds and will be easier to hit out of the rough.  The 712U will not balloon on you at all, it's great on a windy day and is very accurate off the tee.  I find that the 712U is a few yards shorter in terms of carry distance but on overall distance it's a few yards longer.  If you play in an area with a lot of hills it might be best to use the HD as any uphill shots with the 712U might be more difficult.  For the most part the HD will stay in my bag unless it's a really windy day or for at least one course it's rather short but tight in which case the 712U will be in the bag.

The best thing is to find a fitter and hit these different clubs to see what they can do for you.

Agree with the others in going to see a certified fitter.....that's what I always do.....and it works.......

My nickels worth.  19th was right on the mark about being fitted to fill the gaps.  I would also say you should get a lesson on hitting a fairway wood.  There are pinchers and there are sweepers.  Find out what you are,  maybe a weak 3 wood or strong 5 would make a great fit for you with a 20 degree Hybrid.

We sound similar in yardages and ball flight. I bent my 4 iron one degree strong and bought the 712u in 18 degrees. By choking down I can knock 10 yards off it and hit it around 215-220 and its a bullet machine off the tee when you let it eat...lol. Then you can put in a 3 wood or whatever else you want. Win/Win

Awesome - that's super helpful. What shaft do you have in the 712U? Hard to hit off the turf?

I have the KBS C-Taper in an x flex. No problems off the turf at all.

I use a TT DG S300 in mine. It is very easy to hit off the turf.

    Get fit!

I did and the biggest thing it did for me is put my mind at ease...

Getting fit is kind of like a good caddy; they know what you need and make you believe that you have the right stick in your hand.

  13. Im in a similar dilemma.  I am a 7 now,  I just got my 915H 18 degree which replaced my 913H 19 degree with the black rogue and i was on a trackman and was hitting it so much further than my old 913.  My next club is AP1 4 iron which is bent 1 degree strong and then AP2 irons 5 iron being bent to 26 degrees which is also 1 degree strong.  However now i have a huge gap between my 18 degree H and my 4 iron.  915H goes about 225 carry consistently and 4 iron about 205 but my 4 iron is the most inconsistent club and my 5 iron aboout 193ish pretty consistently.  I am thinking of getting a 23.5 Hd but being a lefty its impossible to try it out before.  Tried 21H with all sorts of settings and it is too close to my 18H in distance and tried 24H and couldn't get used to the flight nor the look of the club at address.  I am thinking 23.5 might be the perfect club not only to gap the distance a little better and since i don't like hitting my 4 iron off bad lies in the rough the hybrid might be that perfect club, but i can't try it anywhere.

My 915h 18* is delofted to a 17.25 and am playing around with my 713s.  I have a 910 19* and changed it to a 20.5*.  Try that and see what happens.  That still will give you a six degree gap to your five iron.  I am changing my 913 24* to a 23.25*.  I am getting rid of my 910h.  I have a 913h 17* and changing it to a 18.50*.  The 915 is a wicked club and has the Rogue shaft 85 stiff on it.  I play AP2 irons and they begin with a five iron set at 26*.  I like the flight of the hybrids and I can draw them when needed as well as hit them low and hot when the ocassion call for that shot.  I did away with my four iron years ago.  Of course I'm in my late 60s.

  15. The 915hd has a lower ball flight than just the H. I have the 712U 3 iron bent strong and I love that thing. Despite what most people think it is very easy to shape the ball and stop the ball on the greens. I also play a strong hybrid instead of any normal woods. I'm a certified Fitter and it's definitly worth seeing someone who is one as well.  Best of luck to you, but you can't go wrong either way. Both are great custom clubs!!!!!
