I'm getting ready to re-grip my AP1 irons and my 913D....has anyone tried different size grips for their irons and driver? I've gone with standard size (no wraps) on my irons and standard size (three wraps ) on my driver. My playing partners say I'm nuts going with different sizes.....

    Marvin,

Although some people might think it's unconventional, if it works for you that is all that is important.

I would never tell my playing partner they are nuts about the setup if it is working for them.  If the results are good the so be it.  Me I like the golfpride multicompound midsize grips (I have big hands) and I have them on all my clubs; driver through wedges.  I like consistency in my grips.  I also have a Scott Cameron midsize putter grip on my money club as well.  I played with regular grips on my irons and everthing else was midsize.  It was because I changed my grips and accidently put the wrong grips on my irons.  Could not figure out why I was hitting my irons consistently left until in the middle of a tournament I looked at the end of the grips and I can't repeat what I said on this forum.....needless to say on Monday I went uniform again.....it's all about choices, my friend, and don't let friends intimidate you, but consistency and grip memory is a good thing....and golfpride makes excellent grips....chuck

I don't think you're nuts because I do the same thing. I go with standard size grips and two wraps on my irons and one wrap on my driver. I think it's a preference that is unique to every golfer. I believe in and trust what makes me more comfortable on the golf course so I am in the same boat with you!

You need to have your hand fitted for grips.  I have been 1/32 oversize (3 ) wraps)for as long as I can remember.  Your fingers should be touching your palm when you take a normal grip.  If you are digging into your palm then they are too small.  Get a fitter to check you out.  Then of course you need to figure out what type grip you like.  Best of luck to you.

As said, grips are very important!!  Make sure you go to a good grip fitter and get those hands properly holding the proper set up grips.  Good luck to you!!!!

Hey Marvin, not sure what your looking for but i have just bought the 915 driver and 3 wood, and i added the new Golf Pride CP2 midsize grips and they are amazing. I use a midsize grip due to the fact it feels more comfortable in the hands. It all depends on what you are looking for, the grip is dependent on the player, Golf Pride has some good ones just go and check them out, good luck man, hope this helps.

Went with a midsize grip on my new ap1s and left original grip on all my vokeys as I feel like the smaller grip gives me more feel on shorter wedge shots and around the green (if I would ever miss a green that is haha) I wish

  9. Marvin,

In my case my driver has a larger end diameter compared to my irons so I use two less wraps of tape.  I normally use 4 wraps on my irons and 2 wraps on woods that have a large diamater butt section.  For instance TT DG X100 iron shafts are .600 in size where as my driver and fairway wood use Aldila Tour Green X Shafts which have .637 size.

You may have the opposite on your shafts for irons vs. woods...just a thought!  Regardless if you like them do not change anything!

When it comes to regripping clubs, I prefer Golfpride grips because they seem to hold up much better than the other brands.  On putter grips, it is Winn, they have the softest and tackiest grip on the market (love my Scotty Matador grips and they are made by Winn). Again, all grips midsize.  A little soap and water and a washcloth will make your grips last a bit longer as well as retain that softness and tackiness.  Mine are red and black to match my red and black Titleist golf bag.

I've tried numerous styles and brands and sizes of grips. Two sets of irons, so different grips on each, as well as several different styles on various drivers/fairways/hybrids. You've gotten several good tips already. One midsize grip I seem to like is the Avon Nexus Tour in midsize. Golf Pride has several nice midsize grips. Different brands have different ideas of what midsize is. For some it is +1/16th. For others it is +1/8th. Lamkin has some very nice grips. Some of their grip styles have reduced taper, so the lower hand (right hand for righty golfers) isn't as thin as most grips. I've heard that many pros prefer this style, though one can do the same thing with extra tape wraps under the right hand area. The Lamkin website has a fitting chart based on your measurements both of entire hand as well as finger length, as those charts in stores where you place your hand over a drawing of a hand aren't always the best way to go. If you have a golf shop near you with a large variety of grip styles to choose from, keep trying them, including different amounts of tape wrap. That said, different shafts have different butt diameters, and some grips come in a .580 while others come in a .600 inner butt diameter, even though they both are called standard size. The difference will amount to around 1/50th of an inch on your club. Personally, I've found that I like the Lamkin i-Line style of grip, which is quite similar to the Iomic grips.
  12. I'm sort of the same. I've tried a bunch of different grip styles and brands and sizes but, I always go back to Lamkin Crossline. I typically use 3 wraps on my irons and 4 on my woods. Weird but it works for me.
