Hey guys. I was just curious to see who is still playing an older set of Titleist clubs and what are your favorite models. I'm currently gaming a 905r driver, 906f2 3-wood, 585h hybrid, 735cm irons, and 200 series vokey wedges. What do you have?

Richard I still play 907 driver. I love it so much it is hard to change.

Do you have the D1 or D2? Just curious because I played the D2 version until I tracked down my 905 at the beginning of the 2014 season. A lot people don't like the 907, but I always liked it with the Aldila NV shaft. It just produced that high bomb that is so fun to watch. However, that is part of the reason I went to the 905 - I needed something that launched the ball a little lower and spun a bit less. Nonetheless, the 907 is still a better driver than what most people will give it credit for.

even though I normally play 714 AP1's I do have a 735CM as my 2 iron for this courses that I know are tight and narrow for long irons shots, Awesome club.

    My sons, play 909's and DCI's 792's

I haven't got to play the 735's on the course yet, but a buddy and I went to a place in Springfield, MO that has a couple simulators. I love they way the ball feels off the face! Pretty cool that you have and actually use a 2-iron. I had a 2-iron in the set of DCI 990's I gamed before I got the 735's, but I very rarely used it. It was basically the club I'd play with on the range to test how well I was swinging. I figured if I could hit a decent shot with that club, I was doing ok for the day.

I also like the 909's. I've never swung one, but I like the way they look.

Richard, I just gave up a 20 year old set of DCI's. I've been around scratch for years and just couldn't give them up. Everything else in the bag is fairly new, within a few years. I bought the AP2's, and definitely still adjusting after a few rounds. My game has always revolved around the driver, sand wedge, and putter. They perform, I play well. Nothing wrong with not trying to fix something that isn't broken!...lol

I just got the 735's right before Christmas. Prior to that I was playing some DCI 990's. I liked them quite a bit, but really wanted something forged so I could get the lie angle adjusted properly without stressing the club too much - 2* flat last time I had my pro look at it. The AP2's are definitely nice. If I could afford a set, they would definitely be at the top of my list of clubs to look at. They have a great shape and appearance at address.

Hi Richard, I am playing dci irons 763s for the last 6.4 years I have had great success with them, but it's not the weapon it's the the person who pulls the tricker. I know the clubs I have are very good, but I think the shafts are getting a bit old. Nothing wrong with old sticks.i would buy ap2s but my pocket won't alow me do that.

M.J.O, I'm in the same boat. There are a lot of clubs I'd like to put in my bag if only I could afford it. Better off playing an older set and using my money for green fees, range time, and lessons.

I played DCI's for a long time, then swapped them out for a set of 804 OS that I've been playing for at least 10 years.  I'm not a great ball striker and I hit the 804's about the same as the DCI's.  I've gone from an 8 hdcp to a 12 and have lost a good bit of distance over the past 5 or 6 years as I've gotten older and playing less.  I know the AP1's and AP2's are a degree or so stronger lofts from 6 iron down and I'm just wondering if that stronger loft, or anything else about the AP1's or 2's might help me recover a few yds of my lost distance, or should I save the 800 bucks for a couple extra rounds at St. Andrews and Kingsbarnes this summer? I know I should probably get fitted, and might do that.  I've read a lot of the hype, but was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on whether AP1's and 2's are really any longer than those old DCI's and 804's?

  11. Richard H

    Richard H
    Grand Prairie, TX

Well, I'm fairly certain that they'd be more forgiving - thereby longer on mishits. However, if I had to choose between being able to play St. Andrews or new clubs - I'd play St. Andrews. Then again, I've never been to St. Andrews and it would appear as though you probably have.

One more note about buying new clubs... If you're going to do it, do it right and get fitted. A proper fitting session will give you the opportunity to sample a variety of shafts that may help you regain some speed and improve your ball striking.

Richard, I have a mixture of clubs that I play. 913 driver,710 3w and 27deg Hyb. and an oddessy pro ground putter. I switch off playing 2 rather different sets of iron. 1 set of ap1 714 6-g2 wedges plus 3 vokey wedges. The other set is the 962 black, (no marking).. they are the go to when when I need to get back to basics.. may reshaft then this year make them the #1 set .

I play the 712 AP2's but I have an old set of 735's that I will still put 7-P in the bag from time to time and play with. The feel from the 735 is hard to beat but  they are not the most forgiving long irons Lol. I do have a 2 iron 735 that I switch in and out with a hybrid I don't think I will ever get rid of that iron very very constant.

The oldest I have or carry on occasions is my 910H 20.5. I put it in the bag if I am play a short course and take my 14.5 913F out and use my 915H 17.25 which I can almost hit as far on the short grass. One driver and four hybrids for the shorter courses, where accuracy is a premium. I like the newer technology. I sold my DCIs and my 2008 AP2s....I did keep my 910D3 10.25 when I purchase my new 915D2 10.25 this year....like to have two options in my drivers......so far have not gone back to the old one....

I picked up a set of those and played with them for a few months to get a feel of forged clubs, prior to the 714s coming out and really loved them. They had Project X 5.5 shafts and I hit them really well. I purchased the new AP2s with XP95 S300 shafts which I love as well. I sold them to my brother in law so he could get the same feel and excitement that I got from them in hopes that he might want a new set of AP2s. Now I wish I had them back as my back up set of irons. I really love those irons. They had such a great feel and they performed in an outstanding manner. They may be old school, but the silverbacks were/are a great performing club.

This past year I put a set of 710 AP2's in play and up to then still played the 735 CM's.  Great set of irons and loved the Combo set versatility.  Still kick myself for trading in my 905T as I just like to keep the old clubs around for the old clubs collection.

Currently use 905S driver, 909 fairway 3 and 910 fairway 5. Irons are 690 MB, two Vokey Wedges 52 & 56 degree. Will continue to use all except the driver. Obtained some good information from a recent Ball Fitting session. The Titleist staff member pointed out that the 10.5 degree in the 905S may be too much. Suggested a 9.5 or 8.5 driver loft in order to get a flater flight.

I've been playing 909 series drivers and fairway woods.  I've been wanting to upgrade the 915 driver, but I just feel so comfortable with the one I have and have not experienced a significant improvement with any stock combos I have demo'ed to warrant changing.  Is this just me?

The 905 is a great driver. I was really torn between the R and S models, but decided to go with the larger head.

I am starting to wonder if I should have got a lower lofted head though. Played a round on the 16th and hit the ball around yesterday as well with some pretty high ball flights. Could easily be my swing since I struggle with the timing of my release. We'll see how it goes when spring comes around and I'm playing regularly.

I just rounded up some DCI OS+'s and can't wait to try them out. I've heard so many good things about them, and the more you look back on old reviews, the better they seem to get with age.

An old set of Titleist's are better than the newest off brand stuff anyways !!!

I am still playing my 909D2 driver, much needed upgrade coming this spring to the 915 D2 and the 915 F. Also still playing the AP2 710 series which I am still happy with and last season I just upgraded to a 50,54, 58 black nickel SM5, which I couldn't be happier with. This season I am ditching the hybrid in favor of the 915 3 wood and then tossing and older 962 2 iron in the bag that I just put a Rifle shaft on. Spring cannot come soon enough!!!

    I have some AP1 2008 irons, SM4 wedges.

I've had a TM 2K7 13* draw driver and 7W along with a Steelhead III 11 wood. The TM I have had 4 years now.  I also have a 7H putter and SQ 7-34H that I have had for 4 years.   I have had a 910H 27* for about a year now.  I played with a set of X31 Staff irons for 25 years.  I played with a 910F 19* for about a year but went back to the 7W about a year and a half ago (got better distance with the 19 but the 7W I can hit off anything).

    I'm not one for change.

I hit everything new as it comes out every cycle. Still can't find anything to KO my 690.CB's (3-PW, DG S300). I don't bag a hybrid, I love my 3 iron - hybrid has no slot in my bag, I have always been a 4 wood guy and bag 4 wedges. (P, 52, 56, 60). For John - The 915 d2 with a Rogue Silver 60 (9.5*) finally knocked my beloved 9.5* 909 D2 out of the bag, same with the 915f 16.5 on a Rogue Black. As much as I love (and for me, flat out kill) the new driver, my new 16.5* is even on a level above that. I think the 915F series is going to be one of those golden "everything else is competing for second place" product lines, and especially for me the 16.5* could not be better. It is seriously flat out crazy stupid long - super easy off the deck. I also have recently rekindled my love affair with my old Red X2 Lawsuit putter,  but now @ 33.5", and coming in at a sturdy 370gm.

Ironically, I was just telling my fiancé last night that I am kicking myself for selling my 990b 2-P over the summer because they were the best looking irons I have played in years. I was all Titleist my whole career and over this past summer was playing all swoosh in my bag. They are great clubs, but they are no Titleists. I just went back to my 913 Driver and 3 wood and will be getting either AP2's, MB's, or for good measure, may look for an old set of 962's for nostalgia sake. Anyone selling any iron sets?

    585.h w/v2 shaft

Picked up a 913f.d (14.25) but that thing comes and goes.  906F2 is still almost impossible to pull out of the bag when money is on the line.  913f.d however is waaaaayyyyyy longer off the tee but have not gotten that sucker dialed in off the turf.

When we finally dry out in Washington in July, I put my Tour Model circa late 80's early 90's into the bag. But just like my collection of balls, I have 8 tour bags full of Titleist clubs, I have most versions from the mid 90's and newer. About 8 Drivers, 20 fairways, 8 Hybrids, 18 sets of irons, 80 or so wedges, 15 or so putters. Plus other brands of clubs. I have been offered some decent $ for my Tour Models, but you can't part with something that still performs, replicating any club is near impossible.

Still gaming 735cm irons.  They're getting pretty worn out, though, and 2015 may be the year to replace them.

Still take the 982Bs to the range occasionally (which preceded the 735s).  I also wondered what a forged 962B would have done to the player market...

Just bought AP2s after trying them out. Can't wait to play a few rounds (still Feb in NY). Treated myself after playing Titleist Tour blades (1991) right up to this year. I'm still carrying the 1 and 2 iron though. Nice upgrade on the irons, but I still can't bring myself to stand over a Hybrid. Just doesn't look right.

While I agree with you that the hybrids are unsightly to look at when concentrating on a individual shot, they do perform more consistently than my "old" 1 iron. While I do use the hybrids about 60% of the year, when it finally dries out here in the Northwest, I like the 1 iron for some of the tight tee shots here at our course, the ball is not designed to perform as well with the blade, the controlled starting direction combined with the rollout from the low trajectory make it a clear winner during the summer. On the course where I play 90% + of my rounds throughout the year, there are 3 holes in a row on the front 9 that the straight low shot is the best choice; number 5 is downhill with a right to left slope from 220 to 280 of the tee, a driver can get you inside of 75 yards, but miss it with any curve and it will be OB. If the driver lands on the sloped area, it frequently stops near where it impacts the rough or fairway, leaving you with a shot over/under or around trees. Number 6 is a dogleg right to left with a guarding tree at the inside corner 238 yards from the tee, while in the past I could hit a strong three over this tree, now I can not carry it from the back tee. the 1 iron aimed at the tree lands at 210-220 out and runs under this tree to finish at or inside the 150 to the green, protected by water on the left, and a deep bunker on the right. Number 7 is a short par 5 with lateral on the right, OB if you go 10 feet right of the creek, three trees on the left to stymie you it you are to far left, and a pond fed by the right side creek 248 from the tee. The 1 iron aimed at this pond will stop short of the pond, if it misses left of the fairway but not more than 10 feet into the rough, the minor slope where the three trees stand can redirect your ball back to the right. If you can fit your driver between the landing/descending area onto the fairway, you can reach in two, during a better ball tournament I did reach and holed the putt for a three shot drop in our score, this is the only time I was successful in a match/tourney that mattered, I do not try this strategy in individual play. On the back, 10, 14, and 15 have similar obstacles and the 1 iron is again the better choice off the tee, and on any of the holes on the course if you get off the fairway and into the trees, a shot out under the trees is your only option to advance or come out laterally. None of these shots are better served by a hybrid as they are designed to get the ball up early and to land softly at impact.

I'm a high ball hitter, and feel much more comfortable hitting a 1 or 2 in the fairway. Much better feel when I need a draw. I love the 1 off the tee on tight dogleg left holes. A friend of mine keep pushing me to get a Hybrid, but when I hit his, I have no confidence in where it's going. I think it has more to do with me not liking the look when I stand at address. I live near and play the Black course at Bethpage often. It's hard to get anything through that rough, so there aren't many shots I need a hybrid for.

Interesting thread.  I play Titleist 690 Forged Muscle Back irons with Dynamic Gold S300 Stiff Flex shafts and have for several years.  I have demoed the new 714 MB irons several times, but still prefer the ability to work the ball that I get with my 690's.  Hitting a cut with the new 714's is pretty similar to my 690's, but I just cannot hit a consistent draw with the 714's yet.

Also, I just put the new 915 series driver (d3), 3 and hybrid (H.d) in my bag (upgrade from the 910's).  I have been hitting them on the range for last two months trying to acclimate to them.  Now that I am used to them, they are much superior to my 910's.
