    TT,

I'd like to hear thoughts from you guys/gals on what you've done to replace a long iron (4-Iron specifically). I currently carry the 15 degree 3-wood, the 17 Hybrid, and my AP2 4-Iron. I was looking to possibly replace the 4 with either the 712u or a 23/24 degree hybrid.

I don't have any issues getting the 4 iron airborne but would enjoy some forgiveness especially on the longer par 3s. I currently hit the 4-iron about 205-210 and the 17 degree hybrid about 225-230. I like to play both of these off the tee on shorter holes to lay up into full wedge shots( thinking I would like the 712u here). Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a demo of the 712u 4-iron.

Any thoughts from those that have switched one way or the other?

    Thanks,

    Hatch (USAF)

First of all, thanks for your service. I spent a few years in the AF myself in the late mid 60s to early 70s. I would recommend you going to a fitter and checking out both clubs and see what works best for you swing. I have a 913H set a 23.25 that I use as a 4 iron and I love it. It is a club that I feel that I can count on. I purchased a 915H 18* (17.25*) that I used in lieu of my three fairway which is long. Take a look at the new models. This might fill you need. Cheers. If you are comfortable with hitting an iron, the 712U is a great club, I have it in the 3.  Its longer than a regular iron off the tee, more forgiving and in my opinion easier to hit out of the rough.  I use it a lot to tee off with on short par 4s or even tight longer par 5s that are not reachable in two. I would recommend to go get fit for it as the shaft can be a big difference on how you want it to perform.  It comes with various options both steel and graphite.  But I would highly recommend it.

    Thanks for the post.

If you already hit your current AP2 4i high, a hybrid may actually offer too much spin and launch. However, if you were to look at a hybrid, keep in mind the Hd is more for a digger looking for a more penetrating ball flight, while the H is more for a sweeper looking for spin and launch. The 712U's are also great. They offer forgiveness and a little higher flight than an AP2. One suggestion, if you were to get a U, I would suggest sticking with the same shaft you have in your irons. I found that the vast majority of individuals stuck with the same shaft throughout, offering similar feel and performance.

As always, try to find some to hit first.

    Hope this helps.

I know it's not exactly the response you're looking for, but I recently swapped my 3-iron for a hybrid of the same loft to try and get a more diverse club between my 3w and 4 iron. So far it seems to work ok. Depending on how I swing it, I've hit it anywhere between 210~yrds (stock shot) & 230~yrds (hulk shot lol). So if you're looking for something that can do a lot of things, I'd say go for a hybrid. If you're just looking for a long iron that's just simply easier to hit than your current 4 iron, go with something like the 712U.

That's for all the reply's. Looks like my club will be having a demo day at the end of the month. Hopefully the Titleist guys will have some 712us to go along with the hybrids I can try.

Picked up a 712U today and heading to the range now.  Will post the feedback tonight.  Almost 60 degrees today and 4 months of rust to knock off!!

Hatch, thank you for your service!!

The 712u 4 iron is really, really good.

Now if I could just get Ben Crane to give me his 5...

After trying the 712U at the range on Thursday I really liked it!!  First time out swinging for about 4 months and was able to find a few really good swings in my bag.  The new 712U along with my grip tips from my swing coach (Martin Hall, Golf Channel) I was able to work the ball both ways with the club and that was really exciting.  Will be interesting to see if I get the distance back in my irons after suffering from a weak grip issue for the last couple years.  Need to dial in the draw as it was easy to hit a big hook so that will be exciting to break this club out on dog leg lefts.  Bring on the good weather!!!

    Hatch,

I ditched the 3 and 4 iron and picked up two 915 hybrids that I absolutely love.  Even miss hits go a long ways and are still accurate.  It just seems so difficult to hit a miss hit from any lie with the hybrids so I love these clubs.  They are my go to club for just about any shot.  Hit them straight!
