so i visited a specialty golf shop during lunch today and decided to try the 915d3 (and see if my elbow would hold up - long story).  hit a handful of balls with a 10.5 d3 (diamana blue 60 s+).  now i use a 913d3 9.5 with a rip alpha r, so the comparison isn't apples to apples...and it was on an indoor simulator which could have been juiced up, but when i was able to get a good swing on it, i was able to add 10 yards with the 915.

looking back, i really shouldn't have done it.  how am i supposed to get the wife to let me buy a new driver?...not to mention i'm thinking i want a set of ap2's...first world problems...

Besides skipping expensive coffee shops and putting that $30 a week aside, just remember your last club still works for you and the divorce attorney works for your wife. I would only trust an indoor setup on a head to head comparison. The 2 local retailers have their devices set for hitting onto concrete fairways - I swear. The carry distance isn't far off, but I don't often get 30-60 yards of roll on local golf courses.

I convinced my wife by using my 40th birthday as a great reason to buy new clubs!  She bit and went with me for the fitting....   New set of 714 CB, coupled with 915d2 and 915Fd!  My wife rocks!   Lucky guy, for sure!   You can do it too.

I'm heading to a Titleist trial event tomorrow and will be trying the 915 drivers for the very first time..  I'm with you, i'm VERY afraid that i may like the driver and will be thinking how do i get it...   It's tough for sure...

One option i always think about is trading old clubs in.  It does cut down the cost a little but not a lot...

As for the AP2's, maybe hold off for another year?  If my math is right, Titleist may be releasing the 716 APs this fall so the 714 may come down in prices at some point...   Just my 2 cents.

    christopher,

i, too am headed to a titleist trial event at the end of the month.  it'll be nice to hit balls outside for a change.  hopefully they'll have ap2s with some lightweight shafts.  i went away from dg shafts a long time ago and switched to graphite (especially now with my elbow issues).

funny - i joked with the wife that i'd go to the event, love the driver, come home and tell her i need it.  then we'd get into a big fight about it.  she snickered, i think rolled her eyes and said whatever...

keep us updated on how your trial event goes.

Sorry boys, indoors or out, you're probably going to love it. The sound is a lot more offensive than previous models but the performance speaks for itself. The 915 is the real deal and you're going to end up with a new driver.

Have to comment on getting wife's ok to get new clubs.  I have been married to my wife for almost 38 years.  If I need a new piece of equipment, I go buy it.  I had a part time job shortly after retirement and my wife and I had an agreement that that money could be added to my golf account.  When I need new equipment I just pull out the debit card for the Titleist/FJ golf account and nothing is said.  Creating a golf account years ago was the best thing that has ever happened in my marriage.  Also, I do not keep equipment laying around that I do not use.  I sell clubs, bags, etc and put that money in that account as well.

I build up a slush fund for clubs by emptying my wallet of 1's and 5's each night after work, the change too. In a few weeks, I have 200-300 bucks to spend on whatever I want guilt free. Going to a Titleist event in Oakland tomorrow for a new driver with cash from my "savings plan." Try  it, you won't miss the small bills or change.
