  1. Guys,

I've used the Titleist 762 irons for about 7 years and I'm looking to grab the

AP 1s. I shoot mid to high 80's. My main question is, which shafts would you recommend ?

regular or stiff. I also wouldn't mind if you think I should go with a different iron altogether.

    thanks

The AP2s most closely match the offset of the 762s. The AP1s are easier to hit but you may have to adjust to the greater offset. The CBs have less offset. Titleist offers so many options in shafts, it is nowhere as simple as regular or stiff. Lighter/heavier, more/less launch, so many choices. If your rounds are under 25 a year, you may prefer the AP1.

I would recommend the ap2's. Playin off 13 they are still very forgiving without lacking distance. The main point about the irons is they look fantastic by the ball and in the bag

Best advice I can give is get fitted by a certified Titleist fitter.  They will be able to recommend types of clubs and shafts that fits your game currently.

I was fitted for the AP1s about a year ago and I love them.  It fits my game, nothing fancy, just keeping the ball in play as best as possible.

The mistakes are purely me.  The AP1s are very forgiving, even mishits seem to go towards the target even though its ugly.  It gives you a chance to recover.  I feel that I need more playing time and course management to really shoot better at the moment.  So I know its all me and not the clubs.

    Good Luck

Mark K:  Mark T has given you great advise and I would take him up on it.  It is easy to blame the golf clubs instead of looking in the morror.  Go see the fitter and do it right.  cz

Just like others have mentioned and the most important thing to do is go to a fitter and get fitted for what is best for you. Since you shoot in the 80's, have you considered the AP2s?  These will still provide you a ton of forgiveness, but also a bit more to work the ball compared to the AP1s?

There are so many different types of iron shafts out there, that's it's hard to recommend one, since you need to see what works for you and your swing. It all depends on your swing, swing speed and most importantly feel. Also the stiffness of the shaft depends as well, as you could either hard-step or soft-step the shafts to get the correct frequency for your swing. I mean, look at Jim F., I think he did that to his KBS shafts, so he doesn't play an X-Stiff like most pros do. I think he plays between a regular and stiff flex.

Titleist is great and they have so many options now for their clubs that it should be pretty easy to find one that fits your game.

Let us know what you get and how you hit them.

    Cheers!

Get fitted is the key.  I am going to go against the grain here and say that although I wanted AP2s and love the look of the AP2s, I was afraid that my game would not hold up to them.  I normally shoot in the 80s as well, and actually just shot 80 for the first time.  During the fitting it was really neck and neck to which clubs I was getting AP1 or AP2.  Ultimately the fitter and I discussed the fact that more forgivness is not going to hurt me and I am not one to try and work the ball too much.  Straight is the name of the game for me.

Other posts are right though the difference in offset might between your current set and AP1 might take a little getting used to.

I updated my irons from DTR's to the AP2's and they have made a significant difference to my game. I have dropped my handicap from 26 to 18 in the 25 rounds I have played this season. They take some getting used to after hitting offset irons for so many years but I love the feel of these AP2's. I would recommend you demo these irons, you would be impressed.
